3 FROM THE PRESIDENT... By Mike Lee December 2010 Jan 2011 Year in Review and 2011 My essential message for this month and next, is to stay safe on the roads during this holiday season. Let s not meet by accident. I want to extend my sincere wishes for all members to have a safe and enjoyable season with family and friends. What has the club accomplished this year?! This may be some repetition from past messages but I think it deserves to be restated. The club has five League of American Bicyclist instructors. We have held our first class with nine graduates. We have restructured the ride calendar and route slips. Thanks go to Bob Fairfield, Lee Stebbins, and Jim Pugh for reorganizing the Saturday and Sunday rides. We have improved the Amtrak ride by addressing the suggestions of our riders. Bike racks, early bird registration, host hotel. OK, the end of the route still needs work but that will happen. So what s in store for the club next year? We will be working to streamline the website authoring job. This is not new to me since I was in similar circumstances with the professional photography association. We are putting together a plan, with a small committee of board members to hash this out. We will be proposing some solutions at an upcoming board meeting with alternative actions to consider. Dennis Thomas is doing an excellent job in the PR department to help me with addressing everything that comes my way ie, to attend, voice an opinion, etc. Thank you - Dennis. is. We are working with the city of Dana Point on their first organized ride. The board has been tackling many issues this year and we will continue tackling the challenges as they come our way. Cycling has been evolving ever since I became an avid cyclist in I have watched frame technology and componentry, evolve, everything getting lighter and faster. So the club is no different. We are forging a new relationship with Paramount with a shared jersey design. That will be stabilized for a few years. That s still in negotiation, but the fact is I think we re working together more than in the recent past. And what I really hope for is more member support for the race team on events by cheering them on. I feel the best way for anything substantial to happen, is to start at a grass roots level. The survey we just put out is your tool to voice your opinion on what we do as a board. I feel we should be memberdriven, so help us do our job by telling us what you want. Passivity should not be in your vocabulary. Looking forward I foresee that a year from now we will be in a more secure and predictable situation. I see a new and different look. We will be experimenting with new ideas for members, and new approaches on club riding. Since OCW is now a member of the LAW (League of American Bicyclists) I am able to attend webinar s to help with club administration, riders, organization, and financial management. Ride Safe, Ride Predictable Mike I feel one the most important aspects, is to maintain the clubs riding style, events, and organization. 5 OCW HOLIDAY PARTY Come and join in the fun at the Huntington Harbour Yacht Club. Sunday December 12th. It s a beautiful setting and really done up for the holidays. Party starts at 5 pm with a no host bar and hors d oeuvres. Dinner will be at 7 pm. The Boat Parade will be going on during the evening. Lots of decorated boats passing by. Reservations will open November 1st. Deadline is December 5th. There will be a $10.00 per person fee that will include a catered dinner with lots of desserts. Huntington Harbour Yacht Club 3821 Warner Ave. Huntington Beach (Next to the Fire Station, just east of PCH) Please bring an unwrapped toy for a foster child. The toys will be taken to Hannah s House in Orange. They are extremely grateful for our donations. 6 Jim Pugh OCTOBER GENERAL MEETING RECAP By Jim Brewer Thirty three bike enthusiasts were served with Anita s sloppy Joes, salads, chips and homemade cookies and several choices of drinks. Vegetarians ate egg salad sandwiches. Lee Stebbins discussed riding in a pace line and gave us some suggestions on how to do it safely. Also how to cross wet railroad tracks without falling. Paul Defeo treated us with some of his thoughts concerning volunteering. Paul and Gus Fieldhouse SAGed for a couple old guys trying to finish the Death Valley 508 in under 46 hours. Their 43 and half hour SAG from Santa Clarita through Death Valley to 29 palms was quite remarkable. Link Lindquist spoke and reminded us that racing should be first on our agenda. His idea of getting faster is to enter racing events. Link practices what he preaches by being one of the fastest riders in the world for his age group. Anny Beck was our Guest Speaker. She had some very interesting topics. Anny discussed the scientific research and background of holograms. She brought to light the many uses of hologram technology for cyclists. These included patches for: Pain, soreness, strength, flexibility and an assortment of other uses. Some nice door prizes were chosen throughout the evening. Irene Walker won the bottle of Cool Aid. Other prizes included: Starbucks cards, Camelbak bottles, inner tubes, candy bars and a cool hand bag donated by Mark Kaufman. It s me...garfield (you know, the Kickstand Guy!). Secret Weapon? Here is the duct tape of cycling: Black plastic electric tape! It is: a tire boot, a rim boot, rim tape, a water bottle cage bolt, a headlight mount, a broken bike bag strap, handlebar tape, and on and on. You don t have to carry a full roll. Take a small, used roll, maybe 1/8" left. Remove the cardboard center and squash the roll lengthwise. This roll will not take up much room in your bike bag. 9 Ride Like A Pro By Paul DAquanni If you are new to riding on the road, new to cycling or just wanting to hone you road skills and feel safer riding on the roads, come ride with one of our many experienced members. We can show you the best way to work with traffic, negotiate changing lanes, and the all too familiar challenge of getting into the left hand turn pocket quickly and safely and even have motorist acknowledge you and give you the right of way to complete the maneuver. This Saturday, RLP ride will be the short or medium distance, it s your call. We will have someone available every Saturday for you to ride with. We rotate our experienced riders thoughout the year for this ride. Show up to the Saturday ride at the Square and mention to the ride captains that you want to take advantage of the Ride Like a Pro group ride. These members have either completed the League of American Bicyclists Road 101 course, are League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors, or have demonstrated to the Board of their bike handling skills, proficiency and knowledge of rules of the road as it pertains to cyclists. OCW wants to educate all our members in proper operation of your bicycle and be courteous on the road as this is a reflection to all cyclists and members of OCW. 16 Paramount Track Days By Curt Dosier Paramount will once again be hosting off-season track days at the velodrome in Carson. All OCW and OCW/ Paramount members are welcome, as well as any potential recruits. Loaner track bikes are available and are free. The planned dates are December 5, 12, 19 and January 9, 16, 23. The session will be from 11:30-1:30. You should plan to arrive around 11 am to allow time for setup, especially if you are using a loaner bike. For planning purposes, please contact John McKee (ajmckee@sbcglobal.net) if you are interested in attending any or all of the dates Planning As reviewed in the last issue of Chain Reaction, 2010 was very successful for Paramount. Planning is well under way for the 2011 season, which we hope will bring even more success. Many of you have likely seen the new concepts for the OCW/Paramount clothing for next year. Paramount is excited about the new look and about OCW and Paramount presenting a more unified appearance to the outside world will also see the establishment of a mens Category 1/2 squad and continuance of the mens Category 3 and Masters squads. Unfortunately, we have lost a few members from the womens Category 1/2 squad due to their incredible success. As a result, 2011 will be a rebuilding year on the womens side. We are also working hard to recruit new racers, both men and women. BOARD MEMBER REPORTS President: Mike Lee would like to improve the cohesiveness of the club, such as regrouping on rides. Vice-President: Jim Brewer would like a second speaker for January. Also he will have a 15 minute slide show at the Holiday Party. Membership: Jim Walker reported that OCW has 413 members and that Paramount has 95 members. 17 looking for replacements on the Cat 3 team and the Women s team. The 2010 Paramount team results were in the top 25% among the racing clubs. OCW COMMITTEE REPORTS Budget: Charlie Irwin reported that the committee has created a budget for Most of the income and expenses in the Budget were based on the actual numbers for 2010 and then adjusted for some changes expected for next year. It was moved and seconded to approve the 2011 budget as presented. Motion carried. Charlie also noted that $3000 additional funding had been approved for Paramount during 2010 but the funds were not needed after all. Therefore a motion was made and seconded to rescind the previously approved $3000 for Paramount. Motion passed. Bylaws/Policies and Procedures: Mike Lee said that the Bylaw changes have been approved. The committee will reconvene to review the Policies and Procedures of the Club. OCW/Paramount Relationship: Mike Lee stated that this was discussed at the recent Budget meeting. One of the issues was the design of the new 2011 OCW/ Paramount jersey. items. Paul suggested that we instead offer assistance on just the first four items. Charlie revised the motion accordingly. The second agreed. Motion passed. Ride captain: Lee Stebbins reported on the ride survey analysis. The averaged results indicate that most of those who ride with OCW prefer 8:30 start times in Fall, Spring, Winter and 8:00 in Summer months for all OCW rides. In an attempt to improve scheduling flexibility, it was moved by Lee and seconded by Dan Gorman to have the ride leader for each day coordinate with the Ride Captain to set the start times, routes, and start locations. Motion carried. CTC REPORT: Frank Neal reported that the Triple Crown season is over, with five OCW winners this year. Frank created successful booths at the San Dimas Western Days and at the OCTA bike day event. OLD BUSINESS Nominating Committee: Dan Gorman stated that we are still looking for a Ride Captain and a Training Leader. Lee said he would consider continuing as Ride Captain provided that he received assistance from Board members in leading Sunday rides on each month. OCW/Paramount Jersey: This was discussed under OCW/Paramount Relationship above. A jersey design by Ethan Ede was presented to the Board that incorporates orange and yellow as well as blue. There may be two different vendors: Capo at the higher price level and Voler at the moderate price level. Ethan said that we should finalize design by the end of November. Until then he has requested input from the members. LCI: Lee Stebbins and Paul D Aquanni stated that we are scheduling more Ride like the Pro rides starting in December. Website: Charlie Irwin: No report. Public Relations: Dennis Thomas presented a list of possible areas of support we can give to the City of Dana Point Century. The benefit to OCW will be PR and possibly better access to Camp Pendleton. Mike stated that the first five out of the list of seven items are the most important. Charlie moved and Irene seconded that OCW offer assistance on all seven Holiday Party: Irene Walker reported that Azzara s may be the caterer this year instead of using the staff from the party venue. The cost for 100 people would be $8200. It was moved and seconded to budget $10,000 for this party. Motion carried. NEW BUSINESS Spring Metric: The date will be March 26, Ride around the Bear: The date will be June 11, Amtrak: Registration will begin June 19, Saturday ride requests: Bob Fairfield stated that there have been two medium-length rides: Sprint and Medium. 18 FALL METRIC WRAP UP By Paul DAquanni We had ninety-one riders signed up for our Fall Metric Members Ride. Of the ninety-one, thirty-two were new members. To all of those new members, welcome to the club! On ride day the weather was a bit wet in the early morning hours. But for those who waited out the rain, it turned out to be a spectacular day of riding in the mountains. Seems the roads dried up very quickly, and the riders quickly forgot the early conditions. We added a water stop at mile 23 which the riders really appreciated, as they were just about to head up the mountain. At the top, Los Rios, the conditions were typically cool and clear, and many of the riders took advantage of the apple pie and cider for sale which we transported down the mountain for them. Back at Sylvan Park, the traditional Pizza and Apple Crisps were washed down with cold drinks as the riders shared stories of the day. Much thanks to the volunteers, Jim & Sharon Pugh, Jim & Anita Brewer, Cal & Maureen Banyon, Stuart & Liz Gaston, Jim Walker, and Bob Fieldhouse. Great team effort for these volunteers to give back to our new members as well as existing members. 20 November General Meeting By Jim Brewer Twenty nine people were treated to Anita s delicious sandwiches, salads and desserts We were all reminded of the upcoming events including the Holiday Party in December and the Banquet in February. Bob Fairfield gave us some tips on how to ride safely. Doris Matyasovich presented us with a some interesting stories of her exploits as a downhill mountain cyclist. Her interest began when she was two years old and morphed into being a world class downhill champion in her age group. She explained some of the pitfalls of being a female but also some of the advantages of being, sometimes the only female in her age bracket. 22 Drinking Problems Submitted by Michelle Kashima Cyclists, like all athletes, need plenty of liquids. But beyond that basic tenet, things get murky fast and for years, riders have heard conflicting reports about what, when and how much to drink. So we tapped our best resources, from the latest research to sports nutrition expert Monique Ryan, RD, author of Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes, to separate the facts from the hype. Here s what we found. Selene Yeager Hype: REPLACE EVERY LOST OUNCE For years cyclists have been told to drink enough on the bike so they weigh the same after the ride as they did beforehand. The truth is, your body can t absorb fluids as fast as it loses them, and not every ounce of weight is lost through sweat anyway. The stimulant also doesn t worsen the effects of summertime heat. In fact, caffeine makes you feel better. Numerous studies have shown that it lowers your rate of perceived exertion while improving your strength, endurance and mental performance. Even better, researchers from the University of Birmingham, in England, found that riders who drank a caffeinated sports beverage burned the drink s carbs 26 percent faster than those who consumed a noncaffeinated sports drink, likely because caffeine speeds glucose absorption in the intestine. Hype: YOU NEED MORE PROTEIN Initially, carbohydrates were the essential building blocks of the sports beverage. Then protein muscled its way onto the scene, after early studies showed that carb-protein blends seemed to shoot into the bloodstream and enhance endurance cycling performance better than carb-only beverages. Truth: KEEP UP WITH SWEAT LOSS MOSTLY Replace about 75 percent of lost sweat during a long ride. To do that, you need to know your sweat rate, says Ryan, who recently coached a heavy-sweating triathlete who routinely lost 40 ounces of fluid an hour. To determine your sweat rate, weigh yourself before and after a short ride. An hour ride is a good indicator of what you re losing through sweat alone, Ryan says. Hype: OVERFLOW BEFOREHAND Guzzling gallons of fluids before a ride or race will do little more than send you searching for rest stops. Truth: TOP OFF AS YOU GO Sip a 16-ounce sports drink an hour or two before you saddle up. That s enough time for your body to absorb what it needs and eliminate what it doesn t. Then take in about six to eight ounces (two to three gulps) every 15 to 20 minutes while you ride. Hype: CAFFEINE WILL DEHYDRATE YOU Caffeine has long been demonized as a diuretic. On paper, that means it should lead to dehydration and heat stress, especially when you consider that it also raises your heart rate and increases your metabolism. Truth: CAFFEINE IMPROVES CARB BURNING A review of ongoing research recently revealed that caffeinated drinks don t make you pee that much more than equal amounts of beverages without the buzz. Truth: YOU NEED A LITTLE PROTEIN...MAYBE Recent research on 10 trained cyclists performing an 80K trial showed that riders drinking carb-only beverages did just as well as those drinking carbprotein beverages, and both groups did better than those consuming flavored water. However, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recently reported that taking in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during vigorous aerobic exercise can decrease muscle damage and depletion. If you re on a long ride where you re also eating, you ll be taking in protein already, says Ryan, so it s likely not necessary to also have it in your drink. Hype: HYDRATION DURING EXERCISE IS THE BE-ALL AND END-ALL Big beverage companies would have you grabbing your sports drink during every ride, no matter how long or short the effort, lest you suffer the ill effects of dehydration. Truth: DRINKING EVERY DAY IS ESSENTIAL Your first priority should be staying on top of your daily hydration, says Ryan. Research on gym-goers found that nearly half began their workouts in a dehydrated state. Many people don t consume enough fluids during the day, Ryan says. If you hydrate properly on a regular basis, you won t need to worry as much about getting dehydrated during a typical moderate ride. The old eight-glasses-a-day dictum is a good guidepost.
