FROM THE PRESIDENT... By Charlie Irwin Instant Gratification! It is really interesting how much riders enjoy and expect the instant gratification afforded us by computers, digital cameras and the web. For an example, Saturday night after the Ride Around the Bear I was showing Lynne how to upload the pictures she took at the Bear onto the OCW website. She was saying I am tired, and will put the pictures up tomorrow. I said people will expect the pictures and stats to be up as soon as early Sunday morning, and convinced her that it was probably true. Early Sunday morning I went to work to finish the Bear stats and by noon over 400 people had visited the site checking on both the stats and the pictures. Four hundred people is all that rode the ride! At 1:00, I sent out an to all the Bear registered riders letting them know the pictures and stats had been posted. Almost immediately I started getting s back telling me everything from how much they enjoyed the ride, to how great our volunteers were, and a few infoming me that their times were incorrect. All through technology and immediately! By 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, I told Lynne over 600 people had looked at her pictures. She was amazed and said it was unbelievable. The very next day was Amtrak registration day. Next year I will suggest we change the opening date so it s not so close to the Bear. Anyway, the Amtrak registration opened at exactly 7:00 a.m. I was at work watching and worrying, remembering the year our credit card processor crashed. The first 10 minutes sold over 500 spots. I got a call from Lee Stebbins asking if I was watching the count. He could not believe what was happening. We sold out the 800 riders with train in 48 minutes and the whole ride in one hour and ten minutes. We sold twelve hundred riders 256 jerseys and 337 t-shirts! Talk about technology! My thoughts went out to Jim Walker who spends about a month on the paperwork on a ride that sells out in just over a hour! The 256 jerseys is a really high number. We owe thanks to Deb Butz for another great design. One other quick note. This years Fall Metric will be a club ride. This means it will be free! Fresh apple pie and DutDutchch pizza at the Stapleboek end. You will need to register on the OCW web site so we know how many people to plan for, but there will be no charge for members. If you have a friend that is not a member they will be able complete a membership application on line while registering. Registration will open September 15th at 7:00 a.m. See ya on the road, Charlie NEW OCW MEMBERS All OCW Members, please note... Our strength is our Membership and our future is in our New Members. 4 OCW President s Ride By Charlie Irwin Sunday, August 2, Please join Charlie Irwin, OCW President, for a friendly introductory ride. New and beginning riders are encouraged to join us. We ll meet for the OCW Sunday Ride at Carl s Jr. in Irvine (Campus & Von Karman) at 8:00 a.m. and we ll follow the Medium- Ride course. Questions? Please send an message to president@ocw.org or call JUNE GENERAL MEETING RECAP Retul By Mike Lee June s general meeting with Bob Murphy was an insightful way of bringing high technology and a repeatable system to bike fitting. Although I have not been fitted for my bike with this method, I can certainly see the benefits of this system. From the engineering, technical side of the equation, to measure the human body and then mating it to a rigid object that we operate for long stretches or under huge efforts to propel us down the road is just incredible. Retul works by gathering data from eight anatomical points while the rider is actually moving. A wealth of information is gathered and displayed profiling all the key position angles in just 15 seconds. Adjustments are recommended and then the process is repeated to show the new results. I have felt for a long time that I may not be right on my bike and this may be just the tool to help me refit myself to my bike. If you missed the presentation stop by or call them at: Road Bike 4U - Store at Main St. & Red Hill Ave. Irvine, CA (866) and don t forget to check out their website August Birthdays Wedekind, Patricia 8/1 Kashima, Michelle 8/1 Osterfeld, Brett 8/3 Perry, Ryan 8/4 Butz, Debi 8/5 Jackson, Sarah 8/6 Shakoori, Kia 8/6 Stephens, Rick 8/7 Tripp, Rob 8/7 Petersen, Ken 8/8 Croxford, Kyle 8/9 Noggle, Larry 8/9 Chemotti, Darla 8/10 Guerra, Norma 8/10 Zand, Amir 8/12 Hancock, Therese 8/14 Brant, Ken 8/15 Morgan, Roger 8/16 DeSousa, Austin 8/18 Daley, Tom 8/19 Stephens, Becky 8/19 Nelson, Dodie 8/21 Hanson, Brenda 8/22 Stechert, John 8/24 Klein, Ken 8/24 Staaf, Denice 8/26 Fry, Ken 8/26 Herndon, Roy 8/27 Bloom, Judy 8/29 Nafel, Gloria 8/30 McKee, John 8/30 Sly, Thomas 8/31 PAGE 4 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS AUGUST 2009

June Hike to Red Rock Canyon By Alan Dauger The Borrego Canyon entrance to Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park is popular with mountain bikers as well as hikers. From there they can go to Mustard Road which goes up a steep hill to Four Corners that overlooks Santiago Canyon Road or they can access the Vista Look Out Trail for another great view of north Orange County. We hiked all of this and enjoyed the special trail into Red Rock Canyon which is for hikers only. Our plan for the day was to go to Red Rock Canyon and Vista Look Out for a six-mile hike, but we climbed to Four Corners as well, giving us almost seven miles and an estimated 1200 feet of elevation gain. We not only got a real workout that day but were treated to exceptionally interesting sculpted sandstone scenery in Red Rock Canyon (see the group photo of hikers Irene and Jim Walker, Lorna Laugen, Debi Butz, and Alan Dauger). Also enjoyable was returning through the very scenic and interesting Borrego Canyon, not having to deal with mountain bikers since they are not permitted to return that way. We enjoyed a wide variety of wildflowers including California Poppies, flowering cactus, cattail reeds, caterpillar scorpionweeds, and many others. Interesting to me was the bright red dragonfly near the creek in Borrego Canyon (see photo). ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS AUGUST 2009 PAGE 5

Paramount Race Report 2009 District and National Championships By Curt Dosier The Master s criterium championships, which took place at Paramount s own Grand Prix, was covered last month in President John McKee s report. Since then, the Elite and Masters district (Southern California and Nevada) road race championships took place in Bakersfield and the Elite criterium championships took place in San Luis Obispo. In addition, the Master s national championships were held in Louisville, Kentucky. Paramount racers were present at all of these events, and more. around to battle with the kids in the Cat. 4 s and finished 35 th. Jason Gersting was in the same group for a 44 th place finish with Wilson finishing shortly thereafter. All three were with the lead group in the late stages of the race, but were held up by a crash heading into the next-to-last corner. Stephen Cotton raced in the Cat. 5 s both days and chalked up a 24 th and a 36 th while gaining some experience and progressing towards his upgrade into the Cat. 4 s. The Category 3 team has also been busy in the post- Bakersfield criteriums. The squad has been bolstered by the addition of Wilson Crider, who earned his upgrade from Cat. 4 to Cat. 3. The rest of the guys are Masters Paramount s masters racers had a successful weekend in Bakersfield. The top finishes went to James Morehouse with a 4 th in the 60+ and John Bernstein with an 8 th in the 55+. Following closely, were Paramount President John McKee with a 9 th in the 60+ and Paramount stalwart Howard Miller with a 19 th in the 55+. John McKee made the trip to Master s nationals in Kentucky and came away with an impressive 10 th in the 60+ criterium. Although John was a little disappointed after 6 th place finishes in the two previous years, a top ten in the national championships is still an impressive feat. For more details on the race action, visit John s blog at: johnnymckee.blogspot.com/. The Manhattan Beach Grand Prix took place on June 28 th and again drew large fields. Monty Pettus had the top finish of the Master s with a 3 rd in the 60+. John McKee was 7 th in the 60+ and Howard Miller finished 10 th in the 55+. Elites The Category 3 squad of Jeff Carchidi, Ethan Ede, Marcos Corona, John Bernstein and Curt Dosier, along with Category 4 riders Jason Gersting and Wilson Crider and Category 5 rider Stephen Cotton made the trip to Bakersfield for the Elite district road race championships. Ethan Ede had the top finish in the Cat. 3 s with a 38th. 14 OCW PICNIC By Jim & Irene Walker Sunday, August 9, :00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Central Park Huntington Beach The picnic will be held in the covered area of Huntington Beach Central Park behind Breakfast in the Park. Kent Parish has planned the Sunday rides to start and finish at the park. Again we are grilling burgers and dogs. The club will provide the food, including lots of salads and desserts. We will also have water and lemonade. Bring anything else you would like to drink (no alcohol). BRING CHAIRS AND GAMES This is a dog friendly park, so feel free to bring your dog. The park is located in Huntington Beach at 6622 Lakeview Drive. Enter the area off of Edwards on Inlet Drive, which turns into Lakeview Drive. Inlet Drive is 0.6 miles south of Slater or 0.4 miles north of Ellis. PARKING IS FREE! Please RSVP to Jim & Irene Walker before Wed. Aug. 5 th or teamwalker@bbcnet.com (Continued from page 14) happy to have the added horsepower, which will certainly come in handy in setting up the sprint for Marcos. Wilson notched a 15 th in his first race after the upgrade in the 30+ 3/4 s at the CBR Long Beach crit. Marcos Corona appears to have reached peak form in late June and July. At the District Masters track championships, Marcos scored a Bronze medal in the Kilo. That is a big result in a very tough event. Marcos followed that up with a 5 th at San Pedro, a 7 th at the SLO district championships, an 11 th at Manhattan Beach GP and a 4 th at the CBR Long Beach crit. A near crash by two other riders in the last corner of the SLO district champs slowed Marcos, and took away his opportunity at a higher finish if not the win. Congratulations to Marcos for his solid month of racing! FIELD FIXES By Frank Neal Hi! It s me...garfield (you know, the Kickstand Guy!). Pedal Maintenance. Whenever you clean/lube your chain, be sure to squirt a little of your favorite dry wax lube (like White Lightning) on the mechanism that clips in your cleat. This will be sure you get a good lifetime from your pedals as far as clipping in and out goes. The other thing is that the bearings in the axle shafts need to be inspected and greased each year. Have a competent mechanic do that. PAGE 14 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS AUGUST 2009

Road and Race Clinic by John Howard By Alan Dauger On Sunday, June 14, ten Paramount members were treated to a special morning of race and road riding training by the eminent John Howard. This four-hour classroom and hands-on session covered paceline riding, cornering, maneuvering, emergency braking, and climbing. The group was large enough to allow for good group practice and small enough for John to give each of us individual attention and answer each participant s questions. We started off with a one-hour session in the classroom covering all the subjects, based on a chapter from John Howard s upcoming book. Then we pedaled to Sky Park Circle to apply some of what was discussed. John taught us how to paceline more efficiently, how to signal a change in leader, etc. There was a bit of wind blowing so we practiced echelon pacelining. We learned how the shape of the echelon changes upon each turn and how to drift to the back of the echelon along a diagonal, close to the other riders and not to drift straight back thus losing the benefit of the draft. Please see photo of John Howard instructing the group. Cornering was practiced by a quick approach from outside then close to the apex of a right-angle turn, followed by a sweep out, leaning the bike but not steering it. Then a slalom course was set up to demonstrate tight maneuvering. John pointed out that in racing, the ability to handle the bike in very tight or nearly stopped situations is almost as important as the higher speed action. We then had a fine time doing follow-the-leader on a random course of multiple turns that included jumps up a curb. We learned how to do an emergency stop without skidding the rear tire. To do that, one must apply twice as much force on the front brake as on the rear one, while keeping one s weight to the rear. The Redhill overpass just south of Main proved ideal for hill climbing practice, with a headwind to make it a bit tougher. We learned to get a better position of our feet at the bottom of the pedal stroke on seated climbs, and we practiced keeping a low profile during standing climbs. I found that raising my seat a few millimeters should help my climbing, and I am sure the other participants were able to make improvements as well. More information about John Howard and his FiTTE system may be found at ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS AUGUST 2009 PAGE 15

Is Bicycling Bad for Your Bones? By Michelle Kashima In 2006, Aaron Smathers, then 29, was a graduate student in the Department of Health and Exercise Science at the University of Oklahoma, gathering data for a study of brittle bones in cyclists. One of his subjects was himself, since he s been a bike racer for years. A recent scan had revealed that his bones were less dense than usual for a man his age. Not long after those results came in, he crashed during a race, snapping his collarbone. Six weeks later, in his first post-injury race, he was engulfed by a multi-rider pileup, crashed again, and re-broke his collarbone. Worse, he fractured his hip so badly that the ball of the ball-and-socket joint broke off. Later I thought, well, this reinforces my study, he says. Is cycling bad for the bones? A number of intriguing studies published in the past 18 months, including Smathers, have raised that possibility an issue that has special resonance now, with this weekend s start of the 2009 Tour de France. Certainly, the toll of broken bones among top-level racers is high. Famously, Lance Armstrong broke his collarbone this year, while Christian Vande Velde, another of America s premier Tour hopes, fractured six bones, including three in his spine, during a crash at the Giro d Italia in May. Of course, slamming into the pavement at 40 miles per hour can be expected to break anyone s bones. But Smathers research suggests that other factors may be at work as well. If you have low bone mineral mass, you can wind up with a much more serious break from a crash than if your bones are thicker, he points out. In his study, the bone density of 32 male, competitive bike riders, most in their late 20s and early 30s, was compared to that of age-matched controls, men who were active but not competitive athletes. Bone scans showed that almost all of the cyclists had significantly less bone density in the spine than the control group. Some of the racers, young men in their 20s, had osteopenia in their spines, a medical condition only one step below full-blown osteoporosis. To find guys in their twenties with osteopenia was surprising and pretty disturbing, Smathers says. Another recent study, this one published last year, had similar results. It followed competitive cyclists over the course of a race season in Colorado. The riders, aged 27 to 44, began with slightly below-average bone density. By the conclusion of the race season, they had lost a significant portion of their total, already-low bone mass in their hips, though not in their spines. At a three-month follow-up exam, however, they showed a small amount of bone recovery in the hips. Other broader studies suggest that cycling is unique in its impact on skeletal health. Other endurance sports don t seem to hurt bones in the same way and are typically beneficial. A study published in March, for instance, that compared the bone densities of weight lifters, runners, and cyclists found that the cyclists had lower bone mineral density than the runners or the weight lifters. In another study, triathletes added moderately to their bone mass over the course of a season. Cycling, unlike running or weight-lifting, causes little impact to skeletons. Bones react to external stresses by strengthening bone. Smathers and other researchers aren t sure why cyclists have lower bone density. From their studies they have found that body mass is a central factor. In Smathers study, the lightest riders had the lowest bone density. In addition, many serious riders burn more calories in a day than they consume, an energy imbalance that is being studied to determine its impact on bone loss. And sweat could play a role. A rider can lose hundreds of milligrams of calcium an hour through sweat. Although the riders in both Smathers and the Colorado study were ingesting more than the recommended daily allowance of calcium for their age, they may still have had a deficit of the mineral, which is essential to bone-building. PAGE 16 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS AUGUST 2009

Some researchers theorize that calcium must be taken during exercise to be most effective. A 2004 laboratory study of cyclists who were given either tap water or calcium-enriched water during a 50-minute, stationarybicycle ride found that the riders drinking the tap water had much higher levels of blood chemicals related to bone loss than did the riders swigging the calcium. Researchers suspect that drinking calcium-enriched waters or sports drinks during long, hot bike rides may help to stave off some bone loss. Even more encouraging, most recreational cyclists probably don t need to worry too much about their bones. The studies to date have looked primarily at racers, Smathers says. That s a very specialized demographic. These guys train for hours at a very high intensity. They sweat a lot. They never go for runs. They don t usually do much weight-lifting, to avoid adding bulk. They re strange. He knows. For competitive riders, I d recommend spending some time weight-training. If you do race or train hard and often on a bike, consider a bone scan, he says. It s good to know your status. For himself, his racing career ended with hip surgery and four metal pins in the joint after his second severe crash. I do miss racing, he says. On the plus side, his latest bone scan, completed just weeks ago, shows that his bone density, while still low, is increasing.
