3 credit. A motion was made by Charlie Irwin and seconded by Debi Butz to look at the activities of Paramount members before November 1, and revise the stats to give credit for working the Fiesta ride and the Paramount Crit. Lorna thought other members should get recognition for making sponsor purchases. Donna Parish, Debi Butz and John McKee will work out the points system. Debi is in charge. Holiday Party Committee Recommendations: Barb reported that Debbie Myers is the chair of this committee. The committee includes Marlys Staplebroek, Irene Walker, Angie Carson, and Margie Sepulveda. The holiday party will be on December 9 to be held at Sarducci s at the train depot in San Juan Capistrano. Barb stated that holding the party someone s home with roughly 80 to 110 people is hard is find. Sarducci s has a room that can house 110 people. They will offer a menu with 3 or 4 items. The committee will decide on the menu and decorations. The club needs to put down a $100 deposit to reserve the room. The committee would like to offset the cost by charging $5 to $10 per person. People don t show if they don t have a monetary commitment. Charlie asked about the bar. It will be a no host bar. Charlie also suggested taking the train to the party. It would be fun to take the train as a group. A motion was made by the committee to accept Sarducci s as the location for the holiday party on December 9. Motion carried. Paramount Mileage: Greg Kibble was concerned that John McKee is running some Paramount rides, and he was not getting credit for the mileage. Charlie stated that it can be an OCW ride as long as John, the ride leader, has an OCW sign-in sheet, route slips, and the ride is published in the newsletter and is open to all OCW members. Lorna stated the he must have the sign-in sheet with the verbiage. Scott said he needed someone else to work this. John stated that most Paramount members are not interested in this. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by Jim Walker and seconded by Kent Parish to adjourn. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 12:56 pm. Respectfully submitted by Doris Bingo. One of the questions I received was, What is your bicycle club for? I hadn t really thought about it. As I began to answer the question, I suddenly thought about the many aspects of our club. There really wasn t a simple answer to the question. For some of our members, the bicycle club represents an opportunity to maintain fitness. Others seek the exhilaration of riding in the peloton at race pace or racing against the clock in time-trials. Some enjoy the company of groups doing miles in the County. Still, others want the company of an intimate group riding ultra long distances at moderate paces. There are also members who enjoy off-road adventures. And, then there are members on tandems who enjoy the company of other tandems. There are people who love getting involved in big events such as Amtrak, Ride Around the Bear, Cinco de Mayo Fiesta 150, OCW Paramount Criterium, Fall and Spring Metric. Finally, there are those looking for social interaction with people who share their enthusiasm for cycling through folding parties, picnics, holiday parties, general meetings and the annual awards dinner. That is quite a laundry list, but there are new and varied roles for our club to play. For example, our club joined other Orange County cycling clubs to organize and advocate for our sport. We have always supported the Orange County Bicycle Coalition (OCBC). However, Don Harvey, OCBC Executive Director and OCW member, asked for our direct involvement in lobbying the Dana Point City Council. The Board sent a letter to the Dana Point City Council and asked members to send messages in opposition to the City s ban on bicycles on a section of the Pacific Coast Highway. OCW was also prepared to make formal presentations, if needed. Moreover, Barbara Barrett, Public Relations Officer, was in constant contact with the cycling organizations in the County and helped OCW play a role in reversing the City s decision. We were successful in presenting a unified front of organizing cyclists throughout the County, but FROM THE PRESIDENT... By Barbara Tomita there are many challenges ahead. Hence, it may be necessary for OCW and other cycling clubs to get more involved in cycling advocacy in order to protect our rights. In addition to bicycle advocacy, OCW discovered a need to extend assistance to our members who become ill or are injured. This year member, Marlys Stapelbroek, developed the concept of member support and approached the Board with her idea. As a result, OCW now has a mechanism to coordinate assistance to members and families when requested. This includes communicating with the membership, providing moral support, and giving active support for long-term illness/injury. This system has been successfully implemented and is another way our club supports members and cycling. Our future also holds the promise of new members and more involvement. To achieve that, our club must actively seek and promote membership. And, of course, that means more committees and more involvement (at least that s what it means to me). So, the answer to the question about our bike club is complex because there are so many aspects to our club. We are a diverse group of people with a myriad of interests and motivation about cycling, but we all share a passion for our sport. Cycling, you gotta love it! Special Recognition The 2007 Awards Dinner Committee had the unenviable job of creating the registration process for our annual dinner. Normally, this would be a no brainer. However, the announcement that Bob Roll, OLN Tour de France commentator, would be our speaker caused anxiety about who would get tickets. The committee spent hours going through all the possible options and came up with a tiered system based on activity points. Special thanks to our hard working committee: Dan Gorman, Doris Bingo, Charlie Irwin, Mike Laugen, Lee Stebbins and Jim Walker. DOUBLE CENTURIES By Frank Neal Hi! Its me...garfield (you know, the Kickstand Guy!). The Knoxville Double Century was highlighted with incredible weather! The day was sunny and clear with a high of 80* and the winds were never harsh. The Organizers, Quackcyclists, did an outstanding job of supporting this great course through the Napa Wine Region of California. Due to road construction, the course had to be routed over Mt. Cobb. This increased the elevation gain for the day to 13,000 feet over the 201-mile course. Congratulations to the OCW Members that Finished Knoxville Double Century: Chuck Bramwell, Andy Melczer, Bill Murphy, Frank Neal, Tom Parkes, and Brian Rapp. The following morning, the Quackcyclists, hosted Chuck Bramwell, Executive Director of the CTC, and the California Triple Crown Annual Awards Breakfast. Awards were given to the CTC Stage Race Winners, First-time Triple Crown Winners, and new Hall of Fame Inductees. OCW is proud to announce that OCW Member Brian Rapp was Inducted into the California Triple Crown Hall of Fame for completing 50 CTC Double Centuries and three Paris-Brest-Paris 1200k s (750 miles)! Contributions Committee: Greg Kibble reported that the committee has found potential charities, Hannah House and Wounded Warriors at Camp Pendleton. Wounded Warriors are guys that came back from Iraq, and OCW could possibly donate a stationary exercise bike. Hannah House has requested 25 bicycles of assorted sizes, helmets and gift cards. Brad Hawks has requested a donation toward an Eagle Scout project for donating bikes. Greg thought they might need $4500 to $7500. Barb stated that the club has a formula to determine how much the club will donate. Barb would like a formal proposal from the committee for what we want to donate. Budget Committee: Jim Walker reported that the committee meeting will be on Wednesday night. The committee will come up with a base budget for It will be a general idea of how to spend money, which can be changed by the board. OCW PARAMOUNT CORPORATION REPORT Debi Butz reported that OCW Paramount is solvent. OLD BUSINESS There was no old business. NEW BUSINESS Nominations Committee: Barb stated that two offices are termed out. The offices are the editor, Jeff Rich and public relations, Barbara Barrett. All other positions are open for elections. Jeff Rich and Irene Walker will serve on the nominations committee. Awards Dinner Committee Recommendations: Dan Gorman reported that the committee meeting was held on September 25. The recommendations included are to reward active members, which would be members with 150 activity points or more, will get first shot at registration on November 1. Registration will open for the remaining membership on December 1. The registration will close when full or ten days prior to the banquet. Each membership may bring one guest, who is a member or non member. The price will be $30 for members and $40 for non members. Officer and director gifts will be at the discretion of the president. The limit of attendees will be 200 people. New members must have joined the club by October 1 to be able to attend the banquet. No transfers. Credit card only. Dan also reported that it s not certain if Bob Roll will be doing the Tour of California, so he wanted to know if the club would cover the airfare and lodging. Charlie Irwin stated that this cost has already been taken into account. A motion was made by the committee to accept the recommendations as outlined. Lee Stebbins stated that the committee did not take into account pricing for children under 12. Charlie Irwin said that child pricing is not part of the website. Scott Sharp brought up the fact that some Paramount members do a lot of work for Paramount, but don t get OCW points. Charlie stated that if they worked the Bear and Amtrak, they should have 200 points. Irene Walker didn t think it was fair for guests to be able to register early. Lee felt that it would not fill up right away. Barb stated that if would not be fair for members not to be able to bring their wife. Lee said that it is the member s choice whether to bring a member or non member. Charlie said the committee looked at the list, and all attendees from last year were members, but there could have been some tweaks. Debi Butz stated that a core group of members do all of the work for the club. She felt it was good to give the active members a perk. An amendment to the motion was made by Irene Walker and seconded by Kent Parish that non members pay the actual cost unless they are a significant other of a member. The club should not be subsidizing non members. Charlie stated that we cannot tell from the internet who is a significant other. After looking at last year s attendance, it didn t make much difference. It was a very small number. Mike Laugen asked if Irene were proposing a three-tier pricing system. Irene stated yes. Lorna Laugen asked about cancellations, and what would happen if we don t hit the limit. Charlie stated that if we fill up, we will start a wait list. Members cannot transfer their entry, but can transfer the guest s entry. Irene and Kent withdrew the amendment. Motion carried with one abstention. Points for Paramount Members: Mike Laugen asked how Paramount kept track of volunteers. Scott Sharp said it is informal with an on-line list. Charlie suggested that we go back to the Fiesta ride and add to the stats to give 100 activity points for that event. Also, go back to the Paramount race and give points to members who worked eight hours or more. Fix the stat reports, then the appropriate member will get PAGE 4 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS NOVEMBER 2006 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS NOVEMBER 2006 PAGE 13

A motion was made by Irene Walker and seconded by Debi Butz to accept the treasurer s report. Motion carried. STATUS REPORTS President: Thank you for the response to the Orange County Bicycle Coalition regarding the PCH issue in Dana Point. This would have set a precedence, where other cities would try to close down road to cyclists. This issue brought all the Orange County bicycle clubs together. Don Harvey did a lot of activity on this issue, along with helping with other road closures. There is a notification from UCI Athletics for an event at which UCI coaches and players will be present. The admission is free and will be held at the Anteater Ball Park on October 21 from 11 am to 2 pm. Barb will send out a bulk with information on this event. Vice President: The speaker in November will be Eddie Bates and Team OC Quattro. They will talk about their cross country race in RAAM. Secretary: No report. Membership: OCW has 478 members with 12 new members. Paramount has 146 members. Events: No report. Ride Captain: No report. Editor: No report. Statistician: Absent. Public Relations: Absent. Training: Absent, no report. Paramount: Race season is over, and Paramount is planning for We would like to develop an elite men s program of Cat 1 and 2 riders built around Daniel Stevens, who is a Cat 2. We are continuing with the elite women s program, and they will make it Cat 1, 2 and 3. Women in the development program move up to Cat 3, and want to go to Cat 2. The Fall Metric is coming up, so we are trying to get the information out. Scott Sharp had an idea of an uphill time trial incorporated into the metric. He has checked out the route. They will hand out numbers and time riders to attract a few more riders. Charlie Irwin suggested that it should be put on the website right away. The more enthusiasm we can build, the better. John McKee wants to try to have juniors program. He may ask for small amount of funding. It would be expenses related to juniors for race fees and travel. Tandem Time: Absent. Tandem Time ride will be on October 14 from the Square. Goat Hill: Absent. Web Master: Absent. He is at a kayaking class. Inventory: No report. Insurance: No report. We re insured. OCW COMMITTEES Congratulations, Brian! Long-time OCW Friend Charlie Griffice was honored for completing 100 CTC Double Centuries. OCW has some other Members to note. The San Diego No Crybabies Cycling Association has been our bike-loaders at the Finish of the Amtrak Century for many years. Congrats to Ron Fields for completing the Knoxville Double! Congrats to Bob Esch for earning his first California Triple Crown (3 Doubles in one year)! Next in September was the Tour of Two Forests Double. Due to the Day wildfires along the usual course, the route had to make a major change! Starting in Santa Clarita, the course had to be changed to move Northeast toward California City and Mojave. The course was out-and-back. The temperatures were mild, but the Santa Ana winds were brutal during the out. But, the good news is that it pushed all the riders back to the Finish! The elevation gain for this 200-mile course was about 10,000 feet. Congratulations to the OCW Members that Finished what is now fondly called Tour of Two Fires: Mark Kaufman, Bill Murphy, Tom Parkes, and Brian Rapp. Special notes go to: Mark Kaufman, for earning a 2006 Triple Crown; Bill Murphy, for completing CTC Doubles; Tom Parkes, for completing CTC Doubles; and Brian Rapp, for completing nine CTC Doubles and 2006 Cal Triple Crown Hall of Fame! Congrats to ALL!!! Coming up in the Cal Triple Crown Double Century Schedule for October are: 10/14, Bass Lake Powerhouse Double; 10/21, Solvang Fall Double; 10/ 28, Death Valley Fall Double. If you are interested in finding out more about riding a Double Century, just ask any of the OCW Members listed above. Or, go to the Official California Triple Crown Website at: Ride Safe and Have Fun! UPDATE ON PCH-DANA POINT By Don Harvey, OCBC Many of you were aware of Dana Point s plans for an ordinance forbidding bikes from using Pacific Coast Highway south of San Juan Capistrano, below the bluffs, and making it mandatory that they (we!) use a 10-foot-wide, 2-way multi-use trail to be separated from cars by K-rail and from the railroad right-of-way by the existing guard rail. The City found, to their surprise, that lots of bicyclists objected, and OCBC threatened suit unless use of the above trail by bikes was made optional instead of mandatory. Due to the amount of public input the City received, the issue was removed from the City Council s meeting of Sept. 13 and referred to the City s Traffic Subcommittee for review on their next meeting, Sept. 20. That meeting went well. Speakers included Dan Gutierrez, California Association of Bicycling Organizations (CABO) District 7 Director and League of American Bicyclists (LAB) Certified Instructor LCI #962; OCBC s attorney, Rock Kendall; Roger Taylor, of the Bicycle Association of South Orange County (BASOC); and a Dana Point citizen whose name I didn t get all opposed mandatory use of the above trail by bikes. The Traffic Subcommittee (which includes the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem), by motion, recommended to the City Council that the Council not proceed further with requiring bicyclists to use the trail, and that the Council allow the proposed ordinance to die instead of proceeding to the second reading that would have been on Sept. 27. NOMINATING COMMITTEE FOR THE 2007 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Would you like to serve on next years Board? This years Nominating Committee for 2007 are Jeff Rich, Chariman Doris Bingo Irene Walker If you d like to serve on the Orange County Wheelmen s Board of Directors, please contact any one of the above individuals to get your name on the ballot. The Paramount team will be in hibernation this winter with the exception of a few time trials at Tom s Farm or Santiago Canyon. The primary race season will not get underway until late Jan The focus of the team or at least those that will be doing the team rides is to build a strong endurance base. We will be riding slower than usual and spin in the small chainring. We will hopefully build up to 90 to 100 miles by December on our Saturday ride. Noted cycling author Joel Friel put it better than I could Even in the early days, riders learned through trial and error that they couldn t develop both maximal endurance and maximal power simultaneously. Coaches and athletes found that by first establishing an aerobic endurance base and later by adding faster riding, they could come into top form at the right time. The Saturday ride will either start at The Square or in front of the Jax store in. The ride is 67 miles right now. On Sunday the ride is from the Tustin Market Place and goes to Dana Point and back. The current distance is 57 miles. Aerobic fitness will be our goal this winter. Paramount riders, get off your duff and join us! NEW OCW MEMBERS All OCW Members, please note... Our strength is our Membership and our future is in our New Members. When you attend an OCW function, please take a moment to seek out the New Members, introduce yourself, and say... Neil Browne of Wenzel Coaching and the Paramount team coach was the guest speaker for September. Neil was asked talk about methods for improving climbing and pack riding skills, and covered the topics from top to bottom with great detail. Neil also answered questions about everything from saddle position for climbing to possible solutions for saddle sores to the importance of staying relaxed on the bike. Neil, as a writer for a bicycling magazine, has had a great deal of experience with professional racers. Neil talked about his experience with one particular pro racer and his early season climbing ride. The pro was given specific instruction by his coach about where his heart rate should be, a range not to be exceeded, to get the most out of the training effort for that time in the season. Going to that elusive next level sometimes does require knowing when to go hard and just as importantly when to take it relatively easy.
