2 2010 has been a stellar year for biking in Long Beach, with many significant advances occurring on all fronts. New bike routes, innovative bike facilities, bike safety education, bike corrals, and more and we re just getting started. The purpose of all of these improvements is to make Long Beach a healthier, more active, and more livable community for all of its residents. We are a perfect community to take advantage of cycling and mobility given the great bike paths along the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers as well as our own Beach Bike Path. Vista Street Bike Boulevard The 1st bike boulevard in Southern California was opened to much fanfare by the residents on Vista at a block party hosted by the Belmont Heights and Bluff Heights Neighborhood Associations on Sunday, December 12th. Photo: Allan Crawford 2 Once avoided by parents due to speedy traffic crossing at Park and Ximeno, Vista Street now serves as a safe route to school serving Horace Mann and Lowell Elementary Schools, as well as Rogers Middle School.
3 Accolades & Distinctions! Ranked as the 23 rd best bike city in America by Bicycling Magazine the highest ranked city in Southern California! Received a grand prize national innovation award from the Institute for Transportation Engineers for the green sharrow installation in Belmont Shore! Featured in the independent film Riding Bikes with Dutch, in which film maker Michael Bauch rediscovers bicycle bliss in his home town Green Sharrow Study Results Before and after studies were completed for this one-year experimental project approved by the Federal Highway Administration and the California Traffic Control Devices Committee that was installed in June, The results showed almost a doubling of people on bicycles on 2nd Street, and a 485% increase of people on bikes correctly using the green sharrow lane outside of the door zone. 3
4 Improvements! Completed the Vista Bike Boulevard, the first of its kind in southern California! Installed bike corrals in the East Village and upper Pine, with more on the way! Began construction of a new Bikestation on the Promenade! Began construction of protected bike lanes on Broadway and 3 rd Street downtown! Worked with Caltrans to add bike lanes on PCH from the Traffic Circle south to Orange County! Added 20 new miles of bikeways through grants, innovations, and Public Works expertise! Worked with Los Angeles County to repave the Los Angeles River Bike Trail! Completed improvements to encourage people to ride their bikes to the Willow Metro Blue Line Station, including new bike lanes, signs, and loop detectors 4
5 Programs & Events! Implemented youth bike safety education classes, in which every elementary and middle school student with have participated by the end of 2012! Provided The Cruzer Sessions, with Long Beach Bike Ambassador Tony Cruz, every Thursday night to promote cycling for people of all ages! More than 7,000 people participated in the 2010 Long Beach Bike Festival, which was expanded include activities for all ages and interests, such as a kid s race, bike polo, bmx, and a bike fashion show! 1,200 people participated in the Inaugural Tour of Long Beach, which raised over $65,000 for Miller Children s Hospital! 2,666 cyclists participated in the Long Beach Bike Marathon! Facilitated a series of presentations by guest speakers, including Jeff Mapes and Jim Sayer, to discuss innovations in the world of biking and how we can apply them in Long Beach 5
6 Planning Efforts & Community Assistance! Initiated work to update the City s Bike Master Plan! Competed the third annual bike count with the help of volunteers and CSULB! Formed the Mayor s Coastal Coalition, involving cities in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, to work with Caltrans to make improvements to bike facilities along the full stretch of PCH! Participated in the process to audit every Metro Blue Line Station in Long Beach to develop a plan to encourage people to walk or ride their bike to take the Blue Line! Secured funding from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department for the formation of four bikefriendly retail districts East Village Arts District, Bixby Knolls, Retro Row, and the Anaheim Corridor! Provided assistance to open the Bicycle H.U.B cooperative located at 1740 N. Long Beach Blvd 6
7 Other Bicycling Activity in Long Beach! More than 1,000 people participated in the American Diabetes Association s Ship to Shore Tour de Cure bike ride across the Gerald Desmond and Vincent Thomas Bridges! The Tuesday night circuit series at El Dorado Regional Park organized by California Bicycle Racing continues to draw over 200 participants per week during the Spring and Summer! 3,000 people attended the 4 th Street in Motion event, which included the Bike Film Festival! The Cyclone Coasters, a vintage bicycle club, hosted Sunday rides! 8 Coming in 2011 There s a lot to look forward to next year because a lot is underway. First and most exciting is the separated bikeways that are under construction downtown on Broadway and 3rd. They will be opening in the first quarter and will go a long way toward serving the growing neighborhood of new families that call downtown home. The update of the bike master plan is also getting started with community meetings throughout the city from January through March. And next up is the brand new downtown Bikestation and a new bike share program to serve downtown and CSULB through a Metro grant. There s much more on the way to include it all here - plus we have to save something for the 2011 Year in Review!
