3 Lance Armstrong is available. Hans Rey who does bike stunts is also interested. The third candidate is Bob Roll. Wayne said he would do it for $400, and he wasn t sure what to charge. Most of his speaking is inducting people into the hall of fame. Wayne is also local. Hans charges $1500. Bob wants $5000, and also needs transportation from the second to the last stage of the Tour of California. Dan suggested if we wanted Bob, we could eliminate the door prizes and perhaps charge $25 rather than $20. A motion was made by Dan Gorman and seconded by Ken Fry to accept Bob Roll as the 2007 Banquet speaker, and provide transportation for him. Mike Laugen suggested that we need to fine tune the rules for who can and cannot come to the banquet. Lee stated that it should be for members only. Charlie stated that presently each member can only bring one guest, and only members are allowed to come. An amendment to the motion was made by Kent Parish and seconded by Ken Fry to cancel the door prizes and increase the fee for attending. Irene thought that non-members should pay the actual cost. Lee stated that we can still have door prizes that are donated. Motion carried. Fall Metric: John McKee would like to improve funding for the Paramount team. The Fiesta 150 was quite successful. The Fall Metric had been an OCW ride in Redlands, which was given to Paramount to run and generate income for the team. John would like to do a new ride that starts in Orange County and has three distance options, a century plus starting at Yorba Park with 40 miles through Orange County. The first rest stop would be at Jax, the second at the park, and the remainder of the ride will go out to Tom s Farm with another rest stop there. The second option is to just do the Spring Metric course, and the third option would be 40 miles in Orange County. He would like to give OCW members a chance to do a century ride without having to work the ride. They would charge a low fee for OCW members and include an event T- shirt with a goodie bag, and an end of ride meal with drawings. A motion was made by Charlie Irwin and seconded by Jeff Rich for Paramount to return the Fall Metric to OCW, so the ride can be run with the present courses, because it s been on the website for a year. Alan Dauger preferred John s proposed routes. Jim Walker stated that OCW should take the metric back and Paramount could start a new ride at a different date. Barb felt that the club gave the ride to Paramount, and she did not recall any stipulations. This was to help make Paramount more independent and be able to run on their own. OCW gave them the ride, we could take it back another year. Jeff Rich felt that the ride has been touted for a year at a certain location and route. Charlie said the problem is with the late changes. He would not have a problem with letting Paramount do the Spring Metric. It the changes at such a late date that bothers Charlie. Debbie Myers stated that most people just want to ride and don t care where it goes. OCW should be flexible. Lee looks forward to the Fall Metric, because it s outside of Orange County, and it s easy to staff. It s not in the best interest of the club to change the ride when people have expectations. We can change the Spring Metric, because we have more time. Scott stated that he had proposed changes to the route last year, so it s not a new request. They would like to get more riders. Maybe a swap is ideal. Charlie felt that it s hard to get riders in Orange County, so it probably would not get the same volume of riders. Ross suggested that Paramount run the Fall Metric as is, and OCW give them the Spring Metric. Next fall OCW can take back the Fall Metric. Barb asked why we need to give Redlands a great ride rather than have a ride for our members. If our members aren t involved, volunteers won t want to work that hard. Jim Walker didn t think it was a good idea to charge $35 for riding on roads that people ride regularly. John McKee will accept Charlie s compromise. Debi advised that the Spring Metric has had rain three out of the last four years. Charlie suggested the date can be changed, since there is plenty of time. Three weeks later is much better. An amendment to the motion was made by Barb Tomita and seconded by Lee Stebbins that the 2006 Fall Metric will be run by Paramount using the Redlands course, and Paramount will be responsible for choosing a course location, date and fees for the 2007 Spring Metric. Jeff Rich requested information on the Spring Metric a lot sooner than a month before the event. Debi also asked to keep in mind that the Cinco de Mayo will end up close to the Spring Metric, when choosing the date. Motion as amended carried. ADJOURNMENT A motion was made by Alan Dauger and seconded by Jim Walker to adjourn. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 12:53 pm. Respectfully submitted by Doris Bingo. Every president strives to leave their imprint on an organization. My legacy will undoubtedly be the era of committees. You re probably smiling about this, but our committees involve members in the decision-making process and this, in turn, helps us become a stronger club. I m very excited about the work being done by our committees. Here is a brief review of what we re doing. If you haven t visited our website recently, log on right away. Thanks to the work of our Website Design Committee, OCW now has a new look. The redesign of our website was engineered by Ken Fry (Web Master and Committee Chair), Rick & Debi Butz, Angie Carson and Charlie Irwin. Our website is very comprehensive. An outgrowth of the website project was the creation of a new member letter that includes an option to sign up for groups such as Tandem Time. Kathy Pilcher and Charlie Irwin did an excellent job of completing this project. In the last newsletter, I reported the formation of our new Ultra Distance Committee. Peg Bauer, Chair, has already held several meetings and the ideas are flowing. In addition to Peg, Doris Bingo, Wayne Broadhag, Greg Kibble, Frank Neal, Steve Pohle, Ross Ritari serve on this committee. Chuck Bramwell is serving in an advisory capacity. Our annual holiday party will be a don t miss event thanks to our Holiday Party Committee. This energetic and creative group includes Debbie Myers (Chair), Margie Sepulveda, Marlys Stapelbroek, Angie Carson and Irene Walker. The Donations Committee is chaired by the dynamic duo of Dutch Stapelbroek and Greg Kibble. This committee has the job of coordinating our donations to charitable organizations during the holiday season. Wayne Broadhag, Peg Bauer, and Judy Aronson, have volunteered to assist Dutch and Greg. Watch FROM THE PRESIDENT... By Barbara Tomita the newsletter and website to find out what we re doing and how you can help. Treasurer, Jim Walker, is the chair of our new OCW Budget Committee. This committee will be formed in September. Duties of the committee include developing a proposed budget for the 2007 fiscal year. The proposed budget will be presented to the OCW Board for discussion later this year. Discussions are also underway to create a new Bicycle Touring Committee. This is in response to ideas expressed at one of our focus groups. Following up on a suggestion from a focus group, Alan Dauger and Cheryl McMurray, stepped forward to lead a cross-training group for OCW members. The first outing was a great success and Alan and Cheryl are planning additional cross-training hikes. I am delighted to be part of the exciting accomplishments of our committees. I hope more members will volunteer to work on a committee. It s a great way to meet people and contribute to our club. Please contact me at president@ocw.org to become part of our team. Special Recognition I know I mentioned this earlier, but I wanted to thank Charlie Irwin for his tremendous effort on the OCW website. Charlie spent numerous hours working on the changes requested by the Website Design Committee. Good job, Charlie. For over 30 years, OCW has successfully conducted the Amtrak Century. It has become a premiere cycling event attracting riders everywhere. As director of this event, Lee Stebbins has painstakingly planned every detail including securing the train, rest stops, selecting the route and a zillion other things. Debi Butz, OCW Events Director, has spent countless hours coordinating 100 volunteers and food for 1000 hungry riders. Hats off to Lee and Debi for a job well done. 4 OCW HIKING CROSS-TRAINING By Alan Dauger Hike to Mt. Baden-Powell. As a part of OCW s crosstraining activities, twelve intrepid hikers made it to the summit of Mount Baden-Powell, 9399 feet, in record time on Sunday, September 03, The weather prediction of 100 degree temperatures inland, wind advisories in the mountains and thunderstorms made us a little apprehensive, but remarkably, we were greeted by perfect weather. It was about 75 degrees at the top, and as we descended, cloud cover kept us from getting too hot. The views on the trail and at the top were spectacular as promised. Our bikers legs did a creditable job of carrying us eight miles for an elevation gain of 2800 feet. The punishing downhill tramp was handled well by all the hikers: Dan Gorman and Doris Bingo, Rick and Debbie Butz, Cheryl McMurray, Ken Fry, Barbara Tomita, Alan and Donna Allred, Lorna Laugen, Julie Rolfe, and Alan Dauger. See photo. Hike to Timber Mountain. We are now planning our next hike, which will be Sunday, October 15, to Timber Mountain via Icehouse Canyon. This hike is nine miles round-trip with an elevation gain of 3300 feet. We will meet at the Mt. Baldy Visitor Center to obtain the required wilderness permit, then carpool as needed to the trailhead. To keep updated on the status of this and future hikes, and to obtain more detailed information, please get on the hikers list by ing Alan Dauger at a_biker@dauger.com. AMTRAK CENTURY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2006 By Debi Butz Orange County Wheelmen hosted the 32nd annual Amtrak Century on Saturday, September 9, The ride started at the Irvine Train Station where approximately 1100 eager cyclists checked-in, dropped off luggage, picked up jerseys if ordered, completed final bike maintenance with Tim Peiffer and his staff from Two Wheeler Dealer, and joined fellow cyclists for the scenic 100 mile ride down to San Diego. The weather was perfect for the long distance ride with cool temperatures and clear skies. Along the route riders stopped at any of the four OCW rest stops for cool drinks, juicy fruit, refreshing snacks, tasty sandwiches, and delicious ice cream bars. At the end of the route riders picked up their luggage, changed clothes, and boarded the Amtrak train at 4:30 p.m. for the return to Irvine. A challenge for an event this large is making sure the day runs smoothly with as few problems as possible. This starts months in advance when key members of OCW begin planning the event by making arrangements with Amtrak, securing areas for the rest stops, advertising the event, ordering T-shirts and jerseys, getting volunteers, and registering cyclists. A big thank you must go to Lee Stebbins, Jim & Irene Walker, and Charlie Irwin who put in countless hours behind the scenes to organize and plan this major event. Also, a special thank you to Lee and Cathy Painter who offer their home and front yard each year as the staging area on the day before, the day of, and the day after each event. A cyclist rode by on Friday as volunteers were loading trucks and asked if it was a Ryder Truck Convention! OCW uses over 100 volunteers for the days leading up to the Amtrak Century and on the day of the event in a variety of ways. Volunteers load and unload (several times!) tables, water, food, bikes, baggage, and equipment, purchase ice, food, drinks, and needed equipment, pack registration forms, tag T- shirts and jerseys, drive large rental trucks and SAG vehicles, and work the rest stops. On Sunday volunteers unload everything for a final cleaning, load PAGE 4 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS OCTOBER 2006 have a good 60+ team. The team would also like to keep Daniel Stevens on the team. He s had offers from other teams. The team would like to try to get a cat 2 team going, so cat 3 and 4 racers will have a place to go. The team would like the elite women to compete as masters also. They want to show Jax that the money is well spent. We have plans for next year. Tandem Time: Absent. October 14 is next Tandem Time ride. The ride is gathering steam with more people coming out for this ride. Goat Hill: No report. Web Master: The committee to redesign the web site was successful, and has met two times. It is one of the few committees to finish on time. Barb gave congratulations to the committee with special recognition to Charlie Irwin, since he did a lot of work in the redesign. Inventory: No report. Insurance: Absent. OCW COMMITTEES Laptop Committee: Charlie Irwin would like to put purchasing a laptop on hold for a while. The computer used by the Walker s needs to be replaced before it fails. It is the oldest one in the club. He would like to replace it in the next month, and it will probably cost from $800 to $1300. We go top of the line, because it has to last. A motion was made by Charlie Irwin and seconded by Greg Kibble to provide up to $1500 for a desktop for the treasurer. Kent Parish asked if it s possible to get a laptop and kill two birds with one stone. A separate display can be used at home. Charlie will consider that. Scott Sharp mentioned that a docking station would enable a laptop to become just like a desk top, and it just slides in. Lee stated that with you pay more money for less capability with a laptop. Kent thought that if a laptop is $1500, it would be in the ball park. Charlie was concerned that a laptop does not have the life timeframe of a desk top. Monitors and hard drives fail faster. Ken Fry asked if we are talking about just buying the CPU only, and the answer was yes. Motion carried Web Site Design Committee: See the Web Master s status report. Holiday Party Committee: Debbie Myers said they still need to set a date and find a place. Barb suggested looking at the Saddleback Community Center. Marlys Staperbroek has offered her house as a back-up, but there s a problem with parking. Contributions Committee: Greg Kibble and Dutch Stapelbroek are the co-chairs for this committee. Wayne Broadhag, Peg Bauer and Judy Aronson are on the committee. They will be doing research and making recommendations to the board. Charlie stated that we need to consider that Amtrak may not run next year, so it s hard to vote for the same amount. The board will determine the actual amounts available. Ultra Distance Committee: Ross Ritari stated that this committee was formed to help riders complete a double century or multiple double centuries. We are aiming toward Solvang The first meeting will be in the first week of October. Peg Bauer, Frank Neal and Ross will get together a training plan. Doris Bingo, Wayne Broadhag, Greg Kibble, Frank Neal, Steve Pohle, Ross Ritari and Chuck Bramwell as an advisor are on the committee. Peg is the chair. Ross will be the liaison between the committee and OCW. The committee would accept ideas from members. OCW PARAMOUNT CORPORATION REPORT Debi Butz reported that OCW Paramount is solvent. OLD BUSINESS Amtrak Century: Lee Stebbins reported that behind the scenes, we had more hiccups than previous years, starting with procuring a train, and we may not get one next year. We had a few difficulties and problems, but the riders seemed oblivious to them. The biggest hiccup was that s were sent out with a PDF file attachment, Lee received multiple responses back that the recipients did not receive the attachments. Overall the event went well. NEW BUSINESS Budget Committee: Jim Walker is the chair. Jim, Charlie Irwin, Jeff Rich, Debi Butz, Alan Dauger and Doris Bingo are on the committee. Speakers for 2007 Banquet: Dan Gorman reported that we have three possibilities for the 2007 Awards Banquet speaker. 5 Dana Point mayor and city counsel in time to arrive by the Wednesday, September 13 meeting in Dana Point. He wants to ask everyone on Charlie Irwin s network to add to a paragraph to the letter describing their personal involvement regarding this issue. He also is asking for help to forward this letter to other contacts. Don said the plan is that there would be no bike lanes on the road. There is no conceivable way to improve the situation on this stretch of road, so the city should leave it the way it is. The plan is for two traffic lanes in both directions. Lee Stebbins stated that you cannot safely put bicyclists and pedestrians together in a substandard lane with speed differentials of 20 mph. A motion was made by Lee Stebbins and seconded by Alan Dauger for OCW to address the Dana Point city counsel with the position that the club is opposed to the segregated path way. Don stated that the city s intention is to prohibit bicycles on the road even if it has a shoulder. Barb said they want all bicycles on the path with the dogs, kids and buggies. Wednesday s meeting is to make this final and permanent. The current signage on the road is temporary. The city attorney and city counsel is split about fifty-fifty to go against the vehicle code. Ross brought up the concern that if a rider is coming north, they would need to cross the street to use the bike path.. Motion carried. Motion was made by Charlie Irwin and seconded by Dan Gorman to send a copy of Barbara s letter to the membership. Lee Stebbins wanted clarification that individual members can send letters also. Motion carried. A motion was made by Barbara Barrett in absentia and seconded by Alan Dauger to send the letter read by Barb Tomita to the Dana Point city counsel. Barbara Barrett sent a draft of a letter that could be sent to the city council. Barb asked the board to review and sign the letter. Motion carried. Barb will attend the Wednesday meeting to present the letter. The meeting is at 6 pm. Kent Parish stated that he reported a problem to Don Harvey on PCH and Seapoint with cars parking in the lane, and it was fixed within a week. He also reported a problem to Don on the Santa Ana River trail at Warner, and that was also fixed within a week. He thanked Don for working both of these problems. STATUS REPORTS President: Alex Laugen completed his Eagle Scout project at Peters Canyon Park, and returned $23 that was left over and also contributed some water bottles. Bill Aiken left some bike parts to contribute to the club. Ken Brant will make them available to OCW members. On September 23, Saturday, at the Saddleback Ranch Clubhouse there will be a memorial service for Bill from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Barb will post a phone contact. Barb cannot attend, but she d like someone to attend and represent the club. Vice President: No report. Secretary: No report. Membership: OCW has 467 members with 4 new members. Paramount has 146 members. Events: Yesterday was Amtrak century, and it went off well. We had 1081 riders sign up with 72 no shows. We had two accidents. One rider ended up in the hospital, and the club will send her a card. The other accident occurred when a number of riders got tangled up, but all of them got up and went on, but one rider dropped out later because of soreness. The rest stops went well. SAG drivers did a good job. Compliments to Frank Neal, the end was magnificently done. Seven hundred bikes were unloaded quickly in Irvine. Thanks to everyone for volunteering. Ride Captain: No report. Editor: Please send as soon as possible. Statistician: Absent. Public Relations: Absent. Training: No report. Paramount: We are looking forward to 2007, and the team will form an alliance with Jax bicycle centers. They will be a major sponsor for our team, and they will also sponsor the team with gift certificates. We are working toward creating clothing, and will have OCW on the clothing. The team is trying to recruit new riders, and would like to get a junior s program going again. The team would like to bring Joe Wenninger back to have a good 45+ team. Monty is our contact at Jax and he will head up the 55+ team. We also everything up again to take to the storage unit and then finally unload and place everything back in the OCW storage unit for the next special event. Truly a huge organizational feat! To give credit to our many volunteers please note below that several names occur more than once. Many volunteers assist at registration at Irvine and truck loading in San Diego and back again at Irvine, or at Costco for food shopping on Friday and at a rest stop on Saturday, or loading equipment at the OCW storage unit on Friday and cleaning up on Sunday. Thank you to all the many wonderful volunteers who make the event special for our 1100 riders. NEW BUSINESS PCH in Dana Point Issue: Barbara Barrett sent an e- mail regarding the situation on PCH between Palisades and Camino Capistrano. Don Harvey of OCBC reported that Dana Point is planning to install a barrier to close the road to bicyclists and to require bicyclists to be on a segregated bike path. Don said that this would set a negative precedence, and other cities may do the same thing. The issue is that the bike path will be 10 feet wide with a K-rail, and will be a two-way multi-use path, which would be very narrow. Bicyclists would be forbidden to use the roadway. There are already quite a number of no bike signs there now. Plans are to forbid bicycles on the travel way, and require them to use the two way path along with strollers, joggers and dog walkers. Don has a sample letter of opposition for people to send to the PAGE 6 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS OCTOBER 2006 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS OCTOBER 2006 PAGE 15

7 intervention, I firmly believe I would have died the afternoon of June 22nd, where I came pretty damn close as it was as I laid in the hospital bed, struggling to get enough oxygen into my lungs to sustain me. A word of advice: Listen to your body. I whined to many of you about the inexplicable pain that had developed in my lower left leg. It was odd in that it would come and go, and I had radiating pain that would shoot up my leg into my quads and hamstrings. The pain resembled something between a tight, sore muscle, and a cramping sensation. It was unlike any other tick or injury I had experienced before. I went to my doctor about a month prior to this incident. I had done some research on this subject and even suggested to my doctor that it might be a blood clot, even though I thought this was a long shot. The doctor downplayed this possibility, and had only an x-ray done, which showed nothing. If I had gotten a sonogram done at that time, I would have prevented the subsequent damage to my lungs. Thanks for all the well wishes and support through this, and for the special gift from the fine folks at OCW. And to all those out there in the healing process, my best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. NEW OCW MEMBERS David Rusher All OCW Members, please note... Paramount s new sponsor Jax Bicycle Centers will help by providing a bicycle, a heart montior, and Jax gift certificates for a drawing to everyone that signs up for the ride. Their is going to be a goodie bag for all that start with goo, Power Bar, water bottle and a small energy drink. Only 17 OCW members did the ride last year. We hope there is a better showing this year. Paramount will also be doing the Spring Metric & Century next year. YES CENTURY! Paramount is going to have 3 rides possible for everyone. A 40 mile route in Orange County, the traditional route to Corona and a combined that will be about 105 miles. Jax will be participating big time in this event as well. Paramount realizes that the Ride Around The Bear and Amtrak are rides that so many of you OCW members work and can t ride. Relax on this one and let Paramount do the work. Hope to see you at both events. NEWS FROM THE RECOVER SIDE OF THINGS By Ethan Ede All this news of injuries and accidents, thought an overdue update on my condition might be in order. As you may recall, I was hospitalized on June 22nd after I woke up at 4:30 in the morning with shallow breathing and chest pain. Turns out it was Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), which led to a subsequent Pulmonary Embolism (PE). These are all terms, which I wish I had never become quite so familiar with as most understand better when I explain that basically I had blood clots that formed in my lower right leg, and one of them broke off and made its way into my left lung. Actually, I had bilateral pulmonary emboli, which means multiple clots in both lungs, but only one seemed to wreak havoc. While I was on or near my deathbed back in June, I have made what appears to be a very speedy recovery. I was back on my bike the week after I got out of the hospital, starting with a very easy 30 minutes on the trainer, and progressed to some very easy recovery miles, keeping my HR below 120 or so for most of the rides. I saw a Pulmonary Specialist about two weeks after I got out of the hospital. Based on the results of the tests they ran and subsequent results, he gave me the okay to go at a moderate pace, keeping my HR in the range. Fast forward a few weeks, a Pulmonary Fitness Test, a Cat scan, and a Sonogram later, and I got the green light to go full gas. The cool thing is that, as part of this testing, I found out that, even after this incident, I have above average lung capacity for my size and age, which is even cooler considering I used to smoke and do other unmentionable things back in the day. My lungs were completely clear, and my lower right leg had only mild occlusion and was subsiding. So, as it sat at that point, the only concerns were a bigeminy, which is defined as premature beats alternating regularly with normal beats, which is frequently benign, and frankly a condition I think I had before this all happened, and the Coumadin medication I was on for thinning the blood. So I had to go see a Cardiac specialist to get an Echocardiogram done to find out what, if any concerns there would be with the bigeminy condition. I am still waiting to hear back on the analysis of that test, but the lady that performed the test indicated to the extent that she was able that I had nothing to be concerned about. With respect to the Coumadin, I m not supposed to put myself into perilous situations, and will need to stay on this medication through at least December...hopefully, that will be it. The doctors are concerned as they don t know what caused this in the first place, so we ll keep a close eye on things, and I will be overly-aware of any pains in my lower extremities. So what s the first thing I go do? Of course, what any wise cyclist would do, I go out and ride FoodPark. Man, it just felt so good to be back out riding in a fast group, with the adrenaline pumping, legs and lungs burning, and that fun new sort of pressure feeling I may have for the rest of my life in my lower left lung as a result of an infarction, which is death of one or more sections of lung tissue due to deprivation of an adequate blood supply. The section of dead tissue is called an infarct. Boy, was I excited to hear that! It s truly amazing how resilient the body is, and I am truly grateful for all the advances in medicine and science that served to keep me alive.
