1 Board Meeting Minutes July 17, 2018 Storey Creek Golf and Recreation Society 300 McGimpsey Road V9W 6J3 Directors Present: Staff: Jerry Smit, President Todd Farren, Director Rob Rounds, Treasurer Liza Hadfield, Vice-President Rick Johnson, Secretary Brent Korsa, Director Judith McFarlane, Director Michael Moscovich, Director Debbie Olsen, Business Manager/Food & Beverage Manager Rob Watson, Course Superintendent/Operations Manager Guests: Regrets: Gerry Gillis, Director Steven MacPherson, Head Professional 1. Welcome - call to order: The meeting was called to order at 1:32 pm by Jerry Smit 2. Approval of the agenda: Moved that the agenda be approved. M/S: Judith/Mike Carried 3. Approval of Minutes Moved that the minutes of June 19 be approved. M/S: Judith/Mike Carried Maintenance Report for June 15, 2018 to July 11, 2018 Submitted by Rob Watson: July 12, 2018 The great weather not only for golfing but also for growing grass that I was raving about in my last report is once again continuing. Temperatures have been near perfect with only 2 days in the last month over 30 degrees. Those days were July 17 (31.3 degrees) and July 18 (33.3 degrees).
2 For comparison the mean temperature for June 2017 was 14.9 degrees and we received 26.8 mm of rain, for June 2018 the mean temperature was 14.8 degrees and we received 43 mm of rain. For July 1 to 11 in 2017 the mean temperature was 17.6 degrees and we received.2 mm of rain, for July 1 to 11 in 2018 the mean temperature was 16.7 degrees and we received 4.6 mm of rain. Although we did receive 20.6 mm more rain from June 1 to July 11 this year, it has definitely helped us fill in areas that still had not recovered from damage suffered during the winter of 2016/17 and from damage suffered during last summer. On June 16 we hosted the Rod Brind Amour / Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Cystic Fibrosis Fundraiser and on July 7 we hosted the Cops for Cancer. By all accounts both events went off beautifully and the entire Storey Creek team did themselves proud! On July 10 Storey Creek along with Bear Mountain, Olympic View and Crown Isle was part of a feature on Score Golf TV that focused on the Vancouver Island Golf Trail. With our 2 high school students now working we are now at full staffing levels. They are now trained at bunker raking, range ball picking and weed-eating. Although they are not quite experts yet, they are progressing well and continue to improve each week. We have implemented bi-weekly approach brushing along with select fairways in an effort to improve the turfs growth habit and overall quality. Although our main priority at this time of year is performing routine maintenance, the slightly wetter weather gave us a bit of a break from hand-watering and allowed us to complete a few more sodding projects. Areas we stripped and re-sodded over the past month include: Back rough of 3 green Back rough behind 13 green (2 patches both sides of back bunker) Behind back right bunker at 16 green The greens surrounds irrigation systems that were installed at holes 6, 7, 9 and 14 are definitely starting to pay off. Typically, by this point of the season these areas would of burned up by now and we would be struggling to maintain minimal turf cover. Each week now we notice the turf cover on these areas continuing to get denser. Bunker renovations are on-going. To date we have renovated green side bunkers on holes 1, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and in the short game practice area. This work is taking longer than expected only because we our trying to ensure that they are set up as close to perfect as possible. This was made more difficult due to the fact that due to all the winter kill we suffered last season it has been basically 2 years since we did a quality job. I would expect that we will be done green side bunkers within 10 to 14 days. Other tasks that have been completed recently include: Sprinkler and permeant marker edging Greens were vented with a PlanetAir on July 11 to a depth of approximately 4.5 inches Trimming of low branches that hang over cart paths. Motion to accept the Maintenance Report M/S: Todd/Brent Carried Head Professional Report for June 15, 2018 to July 11, 2018 Submitted by Steven MacPherson: July 12, 2018
3 Green Fees, Power Carts & Driving Range Through June we had a fair amount of rainy days that limited the amount of golf rounds played. Even so, numbers held strong in comparison to previous years. We continue to see the effect of Sequoia golf course being closed with busy mornings stretching through the afternoons. Mens Night, in particular has been strong with 100+ consistently playing. Through the first six months of 2018, online booking had almost doubled from 2017 s numbers. 4 Events The Brind Amour/Nugent-Hopkins Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser was a huge success, raising over $118,000. Thank you to Grant Stewart for all his hard work as organizer. The Cops for Cancer fundraiser has just taken place with the weather brightening up just in time for dinner under the tent. I haven t heard how much money was raised but the event was close to sold out with 34 teams competing and lots of auction items available for participants. The Nanwakolas Corporate Golf Challenge will take place this coming Friday 13th. Curtis Wilson has enrolled 148 golfers for what will be a great afternoon for all participants, I m sure. Next up is the Ladies Crystal Open with a little under 60 entrants at this moment.
