1 March 20 TLGV Spring Outdoors Kick-Off Hike: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., March 20, Breakneck Pond, Union, CT. Join Chief Ranger Bill Reid for our annual First Day of Spring Vernal Equinox hike and kick off to TLGV s Spring Outdoors program. This year we ll make the trek to Breakneck Pond at Bigelow State Park in Union. The hike will be approximately 4 miles round trip. Wear appropriate clothing for late winter weather and muddy trail conditions. Bring your own water, snacks and a lunch is suggested. This Vernal Equinox Hike is for TLGV Members and their guests. Acorn Adventure Letterboxing 101: March 23, 1-3 p.m. Camp Laurel, 175 Clubhouse Road, Lebanon CT. Do you like to be outside? Do you like to search for treasure? Letterboxing is a family-friendly hobby that gets you outside to follow the clues and find the treasure, a hand-carved stamp that you can add to your personal log book. Acorns will get an introduction to letterboxing and their own letterboxing kits, which will include a starter logbook, an inkpad and the chance to make a personal stamp. The group will then hike the trails of Camp Laurel, following the clues to find a series of four letterboxes. The program is open to all kids and their families. NHS Second Saturday Tour - Aaron Dwight Stevens: Walk, am, June 8, 69 East Town Street Norwich, CT. In October of 1859, Lisbon born and Norwich raised, Aaron Dwight Stevens, along with John Brown, led an historic raid at Harper s Ferry, Virginia, and woke the nation up to a new day in our history which was the impetus to put an end to slavery. That, however, was only a part of Dwight s adventurous life. He fought in the War against Mexico, with the elite Dragoons in New Mexico, and against the pro-slavery factions in Bloody Kansas. Those adventures, along with the love of two beautiful women, made his short life an almost unbelievable but very true story. Tom Coletti and Vic Butsch, authors of A Journey to the Gallows, would be pleased to share some of Dwight s amazing story with you. The tour is completely centered close to young Dwight s home, church and school at the Norwichtown Green, and will take one hour. Feel free to bring a portable folding chair if you wish.
