This STIP has been prepared by MLM on behalf of Taylor Wimpey as part of their ongoing commitment to encourage journeys by sustainable transport modes. MLM will be working with residents at Etling View and with Norfolk County Council to encourage more sustainable travel. A Travel Plan has been prepared by MLM for the Etling View development - which includes a range of measures that will be implemented to influence travel behaviour - in particular to reduce single occupancy car trips and promote car sharing, walking, cycling and public transport. A summary of the Travel Plan is provided on pages of this brochure. This STIP provides information about your local amenities and how you can make local journeys on foot and by bicycle, together with information about bus and rail travel, car sharing, tips on more environmentally friendly car use and information about travel to your local schools, and promotion of national and local active events. This STIP also explains how each household can claim a free 60 bus voucher and free 60 cycle voucher - to be used when purchasing a bicycle or bicycle equipment. Your Travel Plan Coordinator Taylor Wimpey have appointed MLM Consulting Engineers to undertake the role of Travel Plan Coordinator for Etling View. We will work with you to keep you informed of useful travel information and provide special offers that will help you have a choice in the way you travel. The TPC can be contacted at tpc@mlmgroup.com. We have a GDPR policy that we can send upon request. 2 3

4 Walking: What Are The Health Benefits of Walking? Local Walks Walking is not only sustainable and eco-friendly but also benefits our whole family s personal health and wellbeing. Government Guidelines Advise that: Children (5-18) Children should do at least 60 minutes (1 hour) of physical activity every day, which should range between moderate-intensity activity, such as cycling, walking and playground activities and vigorous-intensity activity, such as fast running and tennis. On three days a week, these activities should involve muscle-strengthening activities, such as gymnastics or swimming, and bone-strengthening activities, such as running. Adults (19-64) To stay fit and health, adults are advised to do at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking every week, and muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms). More info at: These Guidelines can be hard to reach in a busy lifestyle, but one way you can stay fit and incorporate exercise into your daily routine is by walking or cycling instead of travelling by car. Not only is walking a useful way to get around, and great for your health, it can also be a fun day out and a way to enjoy time with friends or family. Where Can I Walk Walking is a great way to get around and it s an enjoyable leisure activity too. Make sure you are only walking on footpaths designated as having Public Right of Way, rather than crossing someone s private land. Anywhere you see a signpost that says Public Footpath you know you are fine. Local Walking Groups One way to find great walks and meet other people who love walking is to join a local walking group. There are a number of these organisations around your area, some of which have a focus on health and fitness, and some have a focus on exploring the local countryside. They usually run different walks for different levels of experience so there is something for everyone. For more detail visit the following websites: The Ramblers is a walking charity which is dedicated to encouraging walking in the UK. The Ramblers provide information on walking routes, and offer membership for walking events and exclusive walking routes. To find out more about local walking routes visit The Ramblers website at: 6 7

6 Cycling: What Are The Health Benefits of Cycling? Cycling In Your Area As well as being a great form of sustainable transport, cycling is another great way to meet the Government s Guidelines on Exercise (listed on page 6 of this pack). NHS Choices suggests that: Someone who weighs 80kg (12st 9lb) will burn more than 650 calories with an hour s riding and tone their legs and bottom. If you ride up hills or off-road, you ll also work your upper body. More at: The British Cycling Federation explains some other health benefits: Ten Years Younger - Studies have shown that regular cyclists enjoy the general health of someone approximately 10 years younger. Low Impact - No Stress - Tune In - All Body Exercise - Balance - Cycling is low impact exercise kinder on your joints than running and other high impact aerobic activities. Many cyclists report that cycling regularly reduces their perceived levels of stress and promotes relaxation. In cycling, levels of exertion can be much more finely tuned than any other form of exercise. Using speed, wind resistance, gearing, gradient or hyper gravity training (i.e. carrying extra weight), you can tailor your level of exertion to suit your current fitness level or goals. Mountain Biking or out of saddle riding (e.g. climbing) is an excellent full body exercise. When mountain biking, you re constantly shifting your weight, sometimes carrying your bike, working your arms, chest, abs and improving your core stability. Regular cycling improves balance and co-ordination. More information can be found at: Parking your Bike at Home Cycle storage is possible at every home within the garage. Travelling by Bike Travelling by bike is quick, cheap and really convenient, as you can usually park your bike outside where you are going. Where Can I Cycle? Just like walking there are specific places you can and can t cycle. Cycling is very safe when you follow all of the rules of the road, and cycle only where you are allowed. For safety tips and information, and to find out more about cycling etiquette see: It s against the law for cyclists to: Cycle through red lights, including lights at pedestrian crossings. Cycle on pavements, unless there s a sign showing that the pavement has been converted to a cycle path and if you are under 10 years of age. Cycle the wrong way up a one-way street, unless there s a sign showing that cyclists can do so - this is known as a contraflow cycle lane. 12 Public Transport - By Train Where can you go by train? There are lots of useful websites you can use to plan rail journeys. National Rail has a great journey planner found at: ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/planjourney/search. Helping to make the daily commute just like child s play A live departure board can also be found at: ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/ldbboard/dep/nrw Another useful site when travelling to London, is the Transport for London website, found at The journey planner on this website now allows you to include locations outside London allowing you to plan a route to anywhere in London from home. You can do this by selecting the Travel options & accessibility from which you can select the Search outside London tickbox that appears to the right. The table below provides a summary of the services and approximate journey times to key destinations accessible from Norwich railway station. Route Frequency Approx. 13 Car Sharing Finding a Car Sharing Another great way of cutting down on journeys by car from your new home is to get involved in car shares. There are a number of secure and easy-to-use websites that help to promote car sharing in Norfolk which are detailed on the following page. Why Car Share? According to Friends of the Earth on the National Car Share website: Traffic has increased by over 60% since Cars are the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Congestion costs the UK 19 billion a year. Every day there are 10 million empty seats on our roads. If average car occupancy were to increase by half with 2.37 persons per car rather than 1.58 it would lead to a one-third fall in traffic. The Cooperative Greener Travel Initiative shows in the chart below the comparison in CO2 emissions and costs. The following example is based on a 22.5 km (14 mile) commute, in a 2 litre petrol car. Number of people in vehicle Total CO2 (kg) per person Cost per person ( ) Courtesy of: Norfolk County Council promotes Norfolk Liftshare, a scheme which is part of the national Liftshare independent organisation ( They have a great website, to which you can sign-up for free. It includes some useful tools, such as a calculator to see how much you could be saving on your commute if you shared the journey. W BlaBlaCar is a Europe wide car sharing service. They have 2 million users every month, and operate across web and mobile devices. They have a very secure network, and offer features such as a Ladies Only setting when looking for a lift. W Go Car Share is a social car sharing website that has specific searches for events such as Festivals and Sports. W Car Pooling is another international website that offers primarily inter-city shares and cheap car shares to Europe. W Sharing Safely - Advice from Liftshare: Here are 5 common sense tips to stay safe when organising a car share: Avoid exchanging your full name or address before you ve met someone. Make good use of the secure messaging on Liftshare before your lift, and only agree to a lift if you re happy. Some members choose to show each other their IDs e.g. passports, student cards or driving licenses so they know they re travelling with the right person. You re never under the obligation to take a lift. If you don t feel comfortable, don t go through with the lift even if it s been agreed. As with any activity that involves meeting new people, it s advisable to meet in a public place the first time. It s always a good idea to let friends and family know your plans too. Norfolk Liftshare Scheme - Chance to WIN 175 Love2shop voucher Taylor Wimpey offer all households that join the Norfolk Liftshare Scheme the chance to win a 175 Love2shop voucher. Winning households will be selected at random and contacted by the Travel Plan Coordinator. 25

14 School Travel Walking or cycling to school is a great way to keep healthy and active, but there are also options with school buses, public transport and car pooling. A good way to work out the commute to school is to talk to the school and find out the options for sustainable travel they have in place. Contact information on nearby local schools are as follows: Dereham Neatherd High School Norwich Road, East Dereham, NR20 3AX T Dereham Sixth Form College Crown Road, Dereham, NR20 4AG T Little Footsteps of Dereham 15A Norwich Road, Dereham, NR20 3AE T Kings Park Infant School King s Park, Dereham, NR19 2AG T East Dereham Day Nursery 4 Theatre Street, Dereham, NR19 2EW T Dereham Church Infant School 4A St Withburga Lane, Dereham, NR19 1ED T Rainbowpot Day Care and Nursery 33 Quebec Street, Dereham, NR19 2DJ T Helping your children arrive safely at school 26

15 Travel Plan What is a Travel Plan? A Travel Plan offers a range of measures to influence people s travel behaviour and encourage people to reduce private car use and increase use of sustainable transport modes. The high level objectives of the Travel Plan are summarised below: Minimise the number of car-based trips generated by the development - particularly single occupancy car trips during the weekday morning and evening peak periods on the surrounding highway network. Increase the number of trips made to and from the development by sustainable transport modes. Address the access needs of residents and visitors by supporting walking, cycling and use of public transport. Contribute towards the creation of a sustainable development. Raise awareness of the implications of all forms of travel on the environment, and the safety, well-being and health of residents and visitors. How does the Travel Plan Work? Taylor Wimpey have appointed MLM Consulting Engineers to undertake the role of Travel Plan Coordinator for Etling View and as such will support Taylor Wimpey in the project management of the Travel Plan and its implementation. We will work with you to keep you informed of useful travel information, local services that might help to reduce your need to travel and special offers that will help you have a choice in the way you travel. My Personalised Travel Planning (myptp) Sessions Taylor Wimpey will provide all residents with the opportunity to claim free on-line personal travel planning sessions using the myptp tool. For more information visit the Etling View website:
