2 PAGE 2 Introduction Lying close to the Africa coast and at the same latitude as New Delhi, the adjacent islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura provide a great winter sun destination for road cycling. Perfect for those periods of the year when it can be challenging to venture out on the bike in the UK. The islands are dry and predictably sunny, with diverse desert, coastal and rugged volcanic landscapes and great roads. You could spend a week on either of the islands and not run out of roads to ride. But, it s the contrast and combination of the 2 islands, picking the best rides on each, that makes this holiday so special. Lanzarote is the classic, well-established winter getaway for sporting enthusiasts, whilst Fuerte is more raw, the new emerging kid on the block as a cycling destination. Plenty of low-cost flight options means that it s no problem to fly to Lanzarote and back home from Fuerteventura and travelling between the islands couldn t be easier, it s just a 20-minute ferry ride. Our local, Welsh-expatriate, road cycling supremo has picked out 6 of his favourite rides, split between the islands. Starting out at the northern end of Lanzarote, a first highlight is the perfect Category 2 climb to the viewpoint at Mirador del Rio, with stunning views across to the island, La Graciosa. Our second ride on Lanzarote includes the not-to-be-missed climb of Tabayesco and a traverse through the Fire Mountains of the Timanfaya National Park, to finish at Playa Blanca at the very south-west tip of the island. An easier loop ride through the remarkable wine-growing region at the southern end of the island includes a visit to the picturesque coastal village of El Golfo, a great place for a cafe stop. Then, crossing to Fuerteventura, more great rides await, including a ride along the Desert Dune Highway, the empty quarter of Pajara and the testing loop through the Betancuria Massif, the historic capital of the island, including the long climb to the island s paramount viewpoint at Mirador de Morro Velosa (669m). Cycling on both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura blends the classic with the new, the chance to be amongst the first to sample the cycling delights of Fuerte. Expect volcanic cones and craters, desert dunes, Cesar Manrique art, copper plains and white-painted windmills, camels, cacti and palm trees, rugged coastlines and comfortable hotels. And, above all, spectacular road cycling! Is this holiday for you? ROAD CYCLING. During our selection of rides on the adjacent islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura we stay away from the main highways wherever possible and mostly follow secondary and quiet mountain roads through diverse Canarian landscapes. Our 6 day-rides will take us across the islands and up to their highest passes. We will average a little over 85 kilometres each day with an average of around 1100 metres of ascent and descent. The road conditions are usually good and whilst the climbs can be long, they are never very steep 5 to 8% inclination is typical. When cycling, we are accompanied by a support vehicle which will carry water and spares and anything that you think you will need during the day. The support vehicle will accompany the group and will stop regularly to allow you to change items of clothing or top up your water bottles. You don t need to carry anything on this tour. EXCELLENT BIKE HIRE AVAILABLE LOCALLY. Holiday Itinerary Day 1: Meet at the group hotel in Costa Teguise. Pre-trip briefing and dinner. Arriving at Lanzarote Airport, you will take a taxi to the group hotel in nearby Costa Teguise. The drive time is usually 15 minutes and the cost around 25 euros. After checking in at the hotel you will have free time and a useful opportunity to reassemble your bike (for those who have brought their own). Your tour guide will come to the hotel in the afternoon and bring with him any hire bikes which have been requested. Later, at around 8pm, the

3 PAGE 3 guide will provide an informal briefing over dinner at the hotel. KE Land Only package services begin with dinner and overnight at the hotel. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL MEALS D Day 2: Fantastic seascapes and the climb to Mirador del Rio. After breakfast at the hotel, the guide will meet the group outside the reception. There will be a final check that you have everything you need for the day's ride and anything you don't want to carry can go in the support vehicle. We will then set off on the first ride of the holiday, up to the most northerly village on the island, Orzola. After a brief spell on the super smooth highway, we'll follow the old road, through the villages of Guatiza and Mala. Keep a look out for the 'Jardin de Cactus' with its restored windmill on this stretch of road. Following the stunning, rugged coastline, we can appreciate the best of Lanzarote's natural beauty, as we head to the pretty white-painted port of Orzola, which we reach after 32 kilometres. From here, our climbing begins steadily on minor roads to the viewpoint at Mirador del Rio, some 450 metres above sea-level. (Cat 2 with 9.5 kilometres of climbing at 5%). At the 'mirador' itself, we have fantastic views across to the island of La Graciosa. With a population of just 600, La Graciosa was finally provided with a reliable electricity and water supply as recently as the 1960's. At the Mirador del Rio, there is a rather futuristic café, built into the volcanic cliff-face, a possible coffee stop. Our route now heads back southwards down the spine of the island with azure views to the sea on our right side. We swoop down to Maguez on a great road and climb again to the regional centre of Haria. A final few kilometres of hairpins bring us to the high point of the day's ride at 580 metres, before a stunning descent to the characterful old town of Teguise. This is a good place to stop, wander around the charming old streets and maybe enjoy a welcome coffee and cakes stop at Johnny's Bakes. We will return through Teseguite to our hotel in Costa Teguise. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 1200M DISTANCE 83KM GPS DATA VIEW NOW MEALS BD DESCENT 1200M TIME 5-6 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 3: The Tabayesco challenge, then cycle via the 'Fire Mountains' to Playa Blanca. Checking out of our hotel, we retrace a few kilometres along the coast before turning off in the direction of Tabayesco. This is possibly Lanzarote's greatest and most iconic climb! We follow an almost deserted minor road which snakes through the hills, with the summit constantly looming above us. (Cat 2 with 10.2 kilometres of climbing at 6%). Strava bashers take note that the KOM is currently 24:57 minutes for this classic climb! It's the continuous nature of the climb, from the coast to one of the highest points of the island (580m), combined with the serenity, that makes this one so special. The final series of 6 sinuous hairpins up to the summit is worth savouring. We then enjoy a long descent to Teguise, this is a good place to stop, wander around the charming old streets and maybe enjoy a welcome coffee and cakes stop at Johnny's Bakes. From here we will head on to Mozaga, where we follow back roads, as we cut across to Mancha Blanca. Here, we pick up a fantastic road, through the heart of the Parque Natural Los Volcanes, in a part of the island known as the Fire Mountains. With lava flows, colourful rock formations and roadside camel-riding, this is a unique road cycling experience. We'll exit the fire mountains through the delightful village of Yaiza before riding along a largely unused road to Playa Blanca. From this picturesque port town where we will spend 2 nights, we can look across to the island of Fuerteventura, our destination in the coming days.

After 2 days of epic rides today we'll enjoy a shorter ride to keep our legs fresh for the rest of the week. Although a shorter ride there is plenty of climbing on this one, we'll head out of Playa Blanca and up to the village of Femes, well known on the island for being a tough climb, it starts easy and gets steeper towards the top with parts of the last kilometre hitting 10 percent. Once at the top we'll stop for a moment to take in the spectacular views down to Playa Blanca and across the coast before descending down into the wine region. We'll pass through Uga and stop at one of the Wine Bodegas, there will be plenty of room in the van for taking home souvenir bottles. Next we'll head back south to Yaiza but instead of heading straight back to the hotel we'll ride a loop out to the former fishing village of El Golfo and maybe enjoy a drink at one of its pleasant cafes overlooking the crashing waves. Our last kilometres follow a dramatic stretch of road with volcanic peaks on our left and the rich green and blue hues of the ocean on our right. Skirting the Janubio Lagoon, with its glistening salt pans, we arrive at our Playa Blanca accommodation after a fantastic day's riding. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 800M DISTANCE 55KM MEALS BD DESCENT 800M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 5: Ferry to Fuerteventura, then ride the Desert Dune Highway to Caleta de Fuste. We will be up for breakfast bright and early today to take the ferry (20 minutes) across to Fuerteventura. Arriving at the port of Corralejo, we can kick-start our day with a coffee at one of the cafes overlooking the harbour. We then head south on the Desert Dune Highway, following the coast through a spectacular desert landscape that includes impressive dunes and dazzling white-sand beaches. With luck, the famous 'Fuerte' tailwind will be at our backs on this stretch of the ride. After around 24 kilometres, we will turn off on a minor road up into the valley of Vallebron, one of the most beautiful on the island. Cradled by craggy peaks, we reach the day's highpoint at around 380 metres and can enjoy a superb panaroma across the island and back to Lanzarote. We are now riding in the centre of the island and the vastness and emptiness is striking. Passing through the small village Tefia, with its distinctive windmill monument, we begin a long and gentle descent that leads us out of the mountains, back to the coast and our accommodation at Caleta de Fuste, where we'll spend the next 3 nights. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 800M DISTANCE 85KM GPS DATA VIEW NOW MEALS BD DESCENT 800M TIME 4-5 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 6: Fuerteventura's 'empty quarter' and the village of Cardon. This morning we head down the coast for around 4 kilometres, before turning inland at Salinas del Carmen and making a long and gradual ascent into the centre of the island. Turning south, we pass through a number of small villages, including Tiscamanita with another beautifully restored windmill. Then, from Tuineje, we set off on a clockwise loop through the mountainous, empty quarter of Fuerteventura. Leaving Tuineje we'll take quite back

5 PAGE 5 roads to our most southerly point where we'll turn onto a smaller road still to make our way to Cardon. Recently resurfaced this is one of our favourite roads on Fuerteventura and we'll be surprised if you see any activity more than the odd goat. Leaving the village of Cardon behind we start our first major climb of the day, it's not a long one at just over 5 kilometres but does lay claim to being the steepest road on the island, maxing out at 18 percent for one 100 metre section. Once at the top we'll stop to gaze at the views across to the ocean and take the traditional 'top of the hill' holiday snaps. From here we have some exhilarating descents and short sharp climbs to take us north to Pajara where we'll have lunch in the historic village. The last climb of the day takes us out of the mountainous region and back to Tuineje to complete our loop, from here we'll head back the same way to the hotel in Caleta de Fuste. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WITH SWIMMING POOL ASCENT 1350M DISTANCE 100KM MEALS BD DESCENT 1350M TIME 7 HRS CYCLING HOURS Day 7: A mountain circuit through Fuerteventura's most rugged landscape, the Betancuria Massif. For our last ride of the holiday, we head inland, climbing very gradually for 15 kilometres to Antigua one of the oldest villages on the island. The dominating church of Cruz de Caldos, built in 1785, signals our arrival into Antigua. Traversing along the copper-coloured plains of the island, we head west to join one of Fuerteventura's great roads, with views to the ocean on both sides of the island, before arriving in sleepy, leafy Pajara. Turning north, we then head up into the highest and most rugged part of Fuerteventura, the Betancuria Massif. The road is a total joy, majestically twisting and turning over 3 successive climbs, each a little longer than the last. The last of them starts just beyond Vega de Rio Palmas and climbs for around 8 kilometres at an average of 4%. Two thirds of the way up this climb, we pass through the pretty village of Betancuria, which has several welcoming cafes and makes a great place to take a break. The village has quite a history, the island's capital until 1834 and boasting an impressive 17th century church. The road tops out just above 580 metres, but there is a spur road up to the fantastic viewpoint of the Mirador de Morro Velosa (669m), which we will certainly want to ride. Admire the amazing lunar landscape views and take it easy. There's no need to rush and there is a café at the viewpoint! It's all downhill from here - almost 25 kilometres - to our hotel in Caleta de Fuste. Altitude This holiday does not involve any significant ascent to altitude and we would not expect any altitude issues with this trip. Spending Money You will need to buy your lunches on each day of the holiday. Allow 10 to 15 euros for each day's lunch and other snacks and soft drinks. Beer and wine are available every night and if you intend to drink, you should allow for this. We suggest that 200 to 250 euros should cover all your personal expenditure. Your Bike Your Bike - Road Cycling Your bike should be fitted with a compact or triple chainset and we suggest that 25mm tyres will provide a bit more comfort on the variable road surfaces typically found on our Road Cycling holidays. Since you are depending on your bike to transport you throughout your holiday, it s important to ensure it is in good working order. If you are not mechanically minded, get your local bicycle dealer to service it for you. Please contact us if you are unsure about the suitability of your bike. Bike Hire Excellent bike hire is available for this trip and makes a lot of sense - as it costs less than taking your own bike on the flights. Our local agent has a good relationship with a bike shop on Fuerteventura and we recommend that you book your hire bike through When making your booking, please select 'Collection from Gran Tarajal' and use 'KE Adventure Travel' for your address on Fuerteventura. The first day of the hire period is Saturday and the the tour guide will bring your bike to the first night's hotel in the afternoon of Day 1. At the end of the holiday, the guide will take the bike from you after the ride on Day 7 and return it to the shop on the following day. There will be no charge for delivery of your bike. The bikes are 2016 Giant TCR Advance 1 models with Shimano Ultegra components and compact 34/50 chainsets and 11-speed 11/28 cassettes. The cost of bike hire for the week is 115 euros (March subject to change). Please note that your contract for bike hire is directly with the bike shop and not with KE. Travelling With Your Bike Airlines require that you pack your bike properly for travel and for this holiday we recommend that you use a purpose-made soft bike bag. These can be relatively inexpensive. They are also light in weight, easy to handle and, most importantly, can be packed into a small space to allow easy transportation in the support vehicle. You will need to partially dismantle your bike to pack it in your bag. PLEASE DO NOT USE a purpose-made rigid bike box for this holiday. We do not have the space in the support vehicle to transport these bulky items.

8 PAGE 8 Please contact us if you have any questions regarding travelling with your bike. Vehicle Support On each of our day-rides, a support vehicle will accompany the group. The biking leader and the support vehicle driver will watch over the group and they will communicate with each other (and you will be able to communicate with them) by mobile phone. The support vehicle will carry water and fruit, as well any items of gear, change of clothing etc, that you might need during the ride. There will be regular stops to allow the group to reassemble, top up water bottles and refuel. The support vehicle can pick up any group members who wish to take a break from cycling at any time, although it is important to point out that the whole group cannot be carried. Free KE Gift We give you a free gift as a way to thank all our clients who book a KE holiday. Choose from KE T-shirts, buffs, KE trek bags* (where applicable) plus many more. You can however purchase a KE trek bag for Delivery outside of the UK will be charged. Baggage Allowance Apart from your bike in its bag (if you are taking your own bike), you should travel with one main item of luggage, such as a KE Trek Bag or similar holdall, and a small day pack. The day pack can be used to carry valuable items such as cameras and GPS devices whilst travelling, but will also be useful to separate out items you might want to pick up from the support vehicle during the rides, like additional clothing. Your baggage allowance on the flights will depend on your airline. When choosing your flights, whether booking them directly or through KE, you will need to consider the cost of carrying your bike. These costs are your responsibility. Group Size & Holiday Status For each holiday there is a minimum number of participants required to enable it to go ahead. Once the minimum number is reached, the trip status will change from 'Available' to 'Guaranteed to run'. You can check the trip status for each departure in Dates and Prices table. Other than in exceptional circumstances, we will not cancel a trip once it has achieved this guaranteed to run status and so you are free to proceed with your international flight booking and other travel arrangements. General Information Passport & Visas A passport with 6 months remaining validity at the end of your stay is generally required for visits to countries outside the EU. The information that we provide is for UK passport holders. Please check the relevant embassy or consulate for other nationalities. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have the correct travel documents and visas for your holiday. Visa requirements and charges are subject to change without notice. If you are travelling outside the EU you should have at least 2 blank pages in your passport for each country that you visit.

9 PAGE 9 Visa Europe UK and USA passport holders do not require a visa. Health & Vaccinations You should contact your doctor or travel clinic to check whether you require any specific vaccinations. UK residents should obtain a free European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This entitles you to state provided medical treatment, but is not a substitute for medical travel insurance which is still vital when travelling overseas. Currency The unit of currency in Europe is the Euro. Electricity Supply & Plug We recommend you check if you require an adaptor for your electrical items at: Preparing For Your Holiday The better conditioned you are the more you will enjoy your trip. We suggest that you adopt a sensible weekly exercise regime and fit in a number of long cycle rides in hilly country to ensure you are physically capable of taking part in this trip - this will also provide you with an opportunity to make sure all your riding kit is tried and tested before you travel. Cycling is obviously the best activity to prepare for this trip, however, running, rowing and swimming are also good for developing aerobic fitness and stamina. Travel Aware As a reputable tour operator, KE supports the British Foreign & Commonwealth Offices' Travel Aware campaign to enable British citizens to prepare for their journeys overseas. The 'Travel Aware' website provides a single, authoritative source of advice for all kinds of travellers and we recommend that prior to travel, all KE clients visit the official UK Government website at travelaware.campaign.gov.uk and read the FCO Travel Advice for their chosen destination. North Americans can also check out the U.S. Department of State website: for essential travel advice and tips. KE treat the safety and security of all clients as the most important aspect of any trip we organise. We would not run any trip that we did not consider reasonably safe. Should the FCO advise against travel for any reason, we will contact everyone booked to travel to discuss the situation. We receive regular updates direct from the FCO and are in constant touch with our contacts on the ground. If you have any questions about government travel advice, please call our office. Climate Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have dry, sunny climates. It rains on just a handful of days during a typical year, with most of these in December and January. The daytime temperatures in October-November and February-April will usually be of the order of 20 to 25 degrees centigrade and a little cooler than this in the evenings. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura can be windy, with the most usual wind direction being from the north.

Whether you are hiring a bike or taking your own, we recommend that you take the usual day-ride essentials of: mobile phone, multi-tool, mini-pump, tyre levers, spare tubes and puncture repair kit. The hire bikes are provided in good condition and a supply of spares is carried. You may be asked to pay directly for any spares used, especially in the case of crash damage or damage by mis-use. 14 PAGE 14 Repairs Whilst not essential, it is a good idea that you familiarise yourself with how to carry out at least some basic repairs to your bike e.g. changing an inner tube and fixing a puncture. Your bike guide will be happy to help with repairs and general maintenance, but being able to carry out a simple repair yourself could save the inconvenience of having to wait for assistance. Hydration And Energy Snacks You should take 2 standard water bottles and also consider taking a small supply of the gels, power bars or sports drink mix that you would normally use on a ride at home.
