1 Prairie Pedaler Saskatchewan Cycling Association April, 2007 Issue # Victoria Avenue, Regina, Sk S4P 0S4 Next newsletter: Phone: (306) fax Deadline to submit info: August 8 cycling@accesscomm.ca Web Page: Mailing date: August 12 President s Message This has been a busy off-season for the SCA and its various committees. Although I would like to say it has been easy, it has been anything but. An old rivalry between two clubs came back to haunt the SCA. This rivalry started long before a lot of us were even involved in the provincial cycling Newsletter Submission dates All dates are approximate Prairie Pedaler (1 copy/household) Issue Submission Date Mailing Date August 8 August December 12 December 16 scene. I know it has been around for at least as long as I have been. Probably most of us don t even know how it started. Living in Saskatoon, I know there are those who still perpetuate it here. While I haven t witnessed it in Regina, I m sure there are those who perpetuate there also. Needless to say it is still out there and is causing the SCA and its committees extra work. I m sorry, this only involves the racing community of the SCA, and I apologise to our R&T members, Randonneurs, etc. I m sorry for taking up your time with this Presidents message. It doesn t apply to you and please feel free to skip it if you wish; however I believe it needs to be addressed. I believe this rivalry between clubs; almost cost the SCA a race this upcoming season. Some wanted to turn this into a Regina against Saskatoon thing, and could not see past old dividing lines. This unfortunately caught the SCA Development Committee and the rest of the province in the middle. Believe me the SCA wants no part of this battle, and would just as soon it went away. There are those that continue to perpetuate these feelings, and they may not realise it but they are influencing younger club riders. This in turn keeps the rivalry going. Rivalry between clubs is a good thing when it comes to competition, but that is where it should end. We should not be overly critical of the races each club runs but should support each other so that we can develop our provincial race series. I believe it is time for some to forget the past problems and for all of us to continue building towards the future. I believe in unity, and that it will strengthen the SCA. As someone once told me, Even the caribou know there is safety in numbers. Why do some of us have such a hard time grasping this simple concept? How can we expect to have our racers excel outside of the province when we are expending energy infighting amongst ourselves? Please let go of the old rivalries and let us move forward. I for one hope everybody in the whole province (not just in one city) has a great cycling season this year! Wayne Walker President

GASP 2007, The Heart of the Golden South Tour GASP, the Heart of the Golden South Tour, a bicycle ride across some of the greatest frontier of North America. GASP will cover 705 kilometers of hills, dales, highways and scenic roads in Saskatchewan. GASP, is a bicycle tour, and definitely not a race. Join the SCA "Great Annual Saskatchewan Pedal" this year from July 21st through July 28th, drift for eight days across the high plains of south-central Saskatchewan and judge for yourself if Captain John Palliser was right when he opined 150 years ago that this region was the northern reach of the Great American Desert and would prove an untenable wasteland for agriculturists. Based out of Assiniboia, the "Heart of the Golden South," this year's ride will consist of one great loop, two lesser loops, and, just for fun, one out 'n' back day ride. 6 Page 6 - Prairie Pedaler April 2007 Saskatoon Cycling Club presents workshops for cyclists new to commuting and touring The Saskatoon Cycling Club is offering a series of Learn to workshops to help members expand their cycling horizons. A lot of people would like to ride their bikes to work, but don t know where to begin. Learn to Commute By Bicycle is a five-week series on using your bicycle for basic transportation. We ll cover basic equipment and repair, route planning, how to dress and above all essential traffic cycling skills. Bicycle touring is once again gaining in popularity. Learn to Tour by Bicycle is a fourweek series designed to inspire cyclists to try their first overnight trip or cycling vacation. We ll cover the basics of traveling by bicycle, equipment and accessories, the art of packing, menu planning and riding with groups. The workshops wrap up with an easy overnight trip by bicycle. The workshops are organized to take place for a half-hour before the departure of our regular weekly rides. This gives participants a chance to meet other members and go for a ride. From a club organization perspective, these workshops add value to joining a cycling club. People who otherwise would hesitate to join a club for fear that they won t like it, feel that club membership is a small price to pay for a short course that meets other needs in their lives. The workshops were created in response to insurance policy changes that prohibited allowing prospective members to try out club rides before committing to membership. The registration fee includes the cost of SCA and club membership, as well as the cost of handouts. A discount equal to the cost of membership is provided for existing members. The workshops are popular, and others may be planned later. Saskatoon Cycling Club brings back Wednesdays Back by popular demand Wednesday evening rides. For as long as some of us can remember, the Saskatoon Cycling Club s regular weekly rides were on Wednesdays. A couple years ago the club changed the rides to Tuesday evenings, in response to declining turnout, but the new evening proved to be even less popular and our members let us know! We listened. Wednesdays are back. Members also asked us to find a more central location for ride departures, especially for those who ride their bikes to the start. The Broadway Roastery, Broadway location, seemed to meet everyone s needs. So, mark your calendars: Saskatoon Cycling Club, Wednesday evening rides Meet at Broadway Roastery, Broadway at Five Corners Learn To workshop starts at 7:00 p.m. Ride departs at 7:30 p.m. First ride of the season, April 18. 7 Page 7 - Prairie Pedaler April 2007 Dirt Road Tour 2006, Leader & The Great Sand Hills The day started out so promising. The sky was blue, winds were light and the chain was well oiled. After a quick snack, the dozen cyclists signed up for the inaugural Saskatoon Cycling Club Dirt Road Tour were eager to roll. Warm turned to hot and the wind was light, but drying. I was beginning to realize that my winter training strategy (which relied heavily on sitting at a desk and working with a computer) was not well founded. As the group re-hydrated near the entrance to the Leader Golf Course, a Sask Power operator approached our group. Perfect. Who would know the back roads better that a Sask Power employee. Well, he could read a map as well as we could, but since he was just recently stationed in Leader, he was still learning the area. He did share that we should be cautious of snakes on the road. He indicated that the snakes come out in the early evening to warm themselves on the road surface. Fair enough. Who in Saskatchewan hasn t seen a few snakes on the road. No big deal. Oh, except he added that some of the snakes are rattlers. Yeah, right. I ve heard a lot of folklore about rattlesnakes, but even if they do live in this part of the world, what are the chances of seeing one. Slim to none. All right, carry on. As we make our way into town, we find that there are indeed a few dead snakes on the road, but not rattlesnakes. Ha, that Sask Power guy has bought into the myth - hook, line and sinker. When we reach Leader, a customary stop at the tourist information Caboose is in order. The young gal is friendly and appreciates having some customers to help. Hey, she should know about snakes, I think. Yes, there are rattlesnakes but luckily they aren t onthe-move right now. Not knowing what on-themove means, I figure it is more mythology and a pretty good excuse when we later claim that we didn t see any. Well of course you didn t see any; they aren t on-the-move right now. We carry on to The Rattler family restaurant in Leader for supper. Good eats but I m noticing the rattlesnake theme to the day is starting to seem a bit tired. The after-supper ride back to the ranch was fabulous. The sun s heat diminished as did the winds. The participants had found their individual rhythms and were stretched over a couple of miles of prairie road. And then it happened. The lead cyclists, Randy and Doreen on their tandem, stopped their bike, turned it around and were quietly gazing at something on the road. As I approached, they began waving, so I dismounted and approached cautiously. Whoa! It was a snake, rather large and, well, it had a rattle on it s tail. As the other cyclists approached and gathered at a safe distance from the snake, the performance began. This included rattling, coiling and faux striking. Once everyone took their photos, we started to move away from the snake and it quietly and quickly slithered to the side of the road and disappeared into the tall grass. We passed this same point on the road several more times during the weekend, always with a watchful eye for another sighting, but to no avail. A caution to all of the disbelievers like myself: there s rattlers up in those hills. The Saskatoon Cycling Club will be staging two Dirt Road Tours in A pleasant weekend bike ride is guaranteed; adventure will depend on local conditions and the ability to heed the local s conditions. These tours are small-group supported camping tours and offer participants a glimpse into Saskatchewan's natural beauty off the paved track. The two tours being offered this year will be: South Saskatchewan River Valley and the Great Sand Hills, July 6th - 8th, Leader Deader than the Dead Sea -- Little Manitou Lake. August 17th - 19th, Manitou Beach Location details and registration information can be viewed on the club s website:

22 Page 22 - Prairie Pedaler April 2007 The 2007 Blocks Cycle XC8: 8 Hour Enduro returns to Buffalo Pound Provincial Park as Saskatchewan s premier mountain bike event. This year s event will be held September 8 th. Block s Cycle and Norco will be supplying prizes and you might have the chance to chill out with the Elite Norco Reps. The first 100 registered racers will receive what will surely be remembered as the best giveaway in recent Saskatchewan racing history (no hype intended)! Race Categories Race solo with male and female categories, or on open teams of two or four (any gender mix). There will be music, food, and fun to entertain competitors, spectators, and support people. New for 2007 is the open singlespeed sub-category due to popular demand. There will be special recognition for singlespeed racers. For the last two years running singlespeed racers have taken home the gold, are there any geared riders who can beat them this year? Race Course The fabulous course from 2006 will be expanded with even more singletrack, which has laid dormant and unused for years. Expect longer lap times are more challenging riding, oh yeah, and more climbing! Post-Race Events The event does not end at the end of 8 hours. Awards, prizes, a BBQ supper all follow the main event. Don t forget the traditional night lap, so bring your lights if you got them. A bonfire will rage into the night for socializing and telling tall tales of the trails. There are even rumors of a live band. At the end of it all retire to your campsite and curl up in your warm sleeping bag and head home Sunday morning. Food and Camping Camping is available from Friday PM to Sunday AM. As always, a variety of food will be provided to racers and volunteers during the event but bring everything you need just in case.
