1 Volume 24 Number 5 April 2011 NEWS WEST TEXAS CYCLING ASSOCIATION 2011Officers A beloved member of our bike club, Scrub Hawley, passed from this life April 24th at the age of 79. Below is a vivid picture of Scrub and his passion for cycling as verbally painted by Jurgen Heise. It was Paris-Brest-Paris, a radonnée from Paris to the coast and back, close to 900 kilometers, self-supported. Something like a 90-hr time limit. Lights have always been required. Scrub was one of the few Americans who did it early enough (and finished it in the time limit) not to have to requalify. Like those attempting it later. PBP is run only once every three years. To my knowledge, he completed it thrice. Some of us have many more touring miles under the belt, but NOBODY had Scrub s PBP record. President: Carol Clowes president.wtca@bikewtca.org Secretary/Treasurer: Pat Gerdemann treasurer.wtca@bikewtca.org Newsletter Editors: Tonda Elliott newsletter.wtca@bikewtca.org, or Competitive Events Coordinator: Jurgen Heise Tours: Randy Mulsow Webster: Brian Alger webmaster.wtca@bikewtca.org Lubbock Bicycle Club The League of American Bicyclists, the national sponsor of Bike Month. So, Mother's Day is this Sunday and then you can ride the Escarpment to help eliminate those chocolates and other goodies. (Just kidding.) Silver Falls Rest Area is on highway 82 going east from loop 289. Just take the Idalou exit and follow Hwy 82 through Idalou, Ralls, Lorenzo, and Crosbyton to arrive at the rest area. The drive takes about 45 minutes from central Lubbock. The bicycle route continues east on hwy 82 until you arrive in Dickens. At Dickens, we will have a rest stop and then have you turn south to Spur. We'll refuel you in Spur and then send you northwesterly back to Hwy 82. We'll have a rest area at the top of the hill before you turn onto hwy 82. At hwy 82, you will turn left, west, and head back to Silver Falls. The total mileage is 58 and the cost for the ride is $5 per person. They will be incorporated into the Thursday ride that leaves out from Chisum Travel Center at 6:00pm.
