3 The Corridor Tappan Zee Bridge/I287 Corridor is a major interstate transportation link crucial to both the national and northeast economy. Currently transportation choices are limited and growing congestion is reducing mobility. 98% SOV 2% Transit In 1950 when TZB opened 18,000 AADT, in 2008 it was 133, % Increase in 58 years What will travel demand be in 2047? 3
4 Meeting Future Travel Demand and Mobility in the TZB/I-287 Corridor In order to meet forecast growth, future travel demand and mobility needs in the corridor without increasing highway capacity new transit systems are recommended Commuter Rail Transit (CRT) between Rockland County and Grand Central Terminal Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) across entire corridor Highway improvements are limited to safety improvements and transit accommodations TZB Corridor Project is Multimodal (all modes included) Travel Demand Modeling w/nymtc s BPM and Paramics model for highway corridor simulation 4

7 Transit Mode Selection Report Recommendation Analyze Full-Corridor Bus Rapid Transit and Commuter Rail from Orange / Rockland to Grand Central Terminal in the DEIS Begin Tier 2 Transit NEPA process immediately upon conclusion of this study (EIS) Implement Full-Corridor BRT as soon as possible; ideally concurrent with completion of bridge if Tier 2 BRT process allows. CRT advances as circumstances and finances dictate 7
