3 It is a distinct pleasure for me to welcome each of you to this event, and to express to Muhammad Ali my personal appreciation and that of the many students who will benefit from the Muhammad Ali Scholarship Fund. It is evident that the courage and determination that has made Muhammad Ali a champion is complemented by his generosity and a commitment to helping others. This benefit appearance by Mr. Ali on behalf of scholarships for Northern Michigan University students is but one of many gifts of time and energies he has given to help disadvantaged peoples throughout the world. We are truly grateful to Muhammad Ali, the greatest champion of champions, for joining Northern Michigan University in " Work ing to put tomorrow in good hands." John X. Jamrich President THE MUHAMMAD ALI SCHOLARSHIP FUND GOALS 1. Facilitate entry and retention of minority students at Northern Michigan University. 2. Provide minority student applicants having superior academic credentials with full, four-year awards, provided they maintain an academic average commensurate with their scholastic ability, and make satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate deqree. 3. Provide minority student applicants possessing superior athletic ability with full, one-year awards, renewable for a maximum of three additional years, provided they maintain the minimum academic standards of eligibility established for financial aid recipients at Northern Michigan University. 4. Provide minority student applicants v;ho demonstrate distinct promise of achievement in the fine arts with full, four-year awards, provided they maintain minimum academic standards established by Northern Michigan University for recipients of financial aid. OPERATIONAL OVERVIEW The Muhammad Ali Student Screening Committee shall review candidates' qualifications and send their recommendations to the NMU Scholarship Committee which will make the final selection. A recipient does not auto matically qualify for a renewal of the scholarship, but is eligible for consideration for a renewal. It is further agreed that Northern Michigan University will invest these funds. The interest earned thereon shall be deposited to, and become part of, the Muhammad Ali Scholarship Fund. Monies may be added to the fund by checks made out to the University Development Fund and designated for the Muhammad Ali Scholarship. The conditions and regulations set forth above, governing the administration of the program, shall be subject to additions, modifications, or amendments as shall be mutually agreed upon in writing by the Director of Financial Aid and the Director of the NMU Development Fund.

E~ H1GH IGH,- Former World Champion 37 years (2/24/40) Louisville, Kentucky Wins including 24 Knockouts 1960 National AAU Light Heavyweight Champion 1960 National Golden Glove Light Heavyweight Champion 1960 Olympic Light Heavyweight Champion 1964 Won Heavyweight Championship with 7th round knockout of Sonny Liston on February 25, 1964, at Miami Beach, Florida Only second man ever to regain Heavyweight Boxing Title ( Floyd Patterson was first), when Ali knocked out George Foreman on October 30, 1974, in Zaire was Jimmy Ellis year. On April 27, 1968, he won a 15 round decision from Jerry Quarry at Oakland, California, to win the W.B.A. World's Heavyweight Championship. 5 J... BILL SPAGNOLO Bill Spagnolo has enjoyed a distinguished professional career as a sportscaster for 10 years. His credentials show ten Michigan title fight broadcasts and two world boxing assignments. Specializing in public relations and promotional programs for young adults, Spagnolo has held top drawer management posts in the governor's office of Criminal Justice, and Intercontinental Sports of New York. His work with the Michigan Health Coun cil and Kiwanis International won two state and one national award. Spagnolo's career has included tours of duty in radio, television and newspaper work in Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee. The high regard with which Mr. Spagnolo is held by people in the media throughout the midwest is underlined by some of the assignments entrusted to. him: Chicago World Championship Boxing broadcaster (1960), Executive Director, World's Fair ' Promotion (1964), National Hockey League Publicist (1968), and Public Relations Director for the Governor's Juvenile Justice Program (1970). Throughout an interesting career in broadcasting, he has worked closely with well -known business, sports and entertainment personalities : Win Schuler, Biggie Munn, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Al Kaline, Evil Knieval, the Harlem Globetrotters, Buddy Rogers and Sugar Ray Robinson. JOE WILLIE DeMYERS Ali-Program Advisor Mr. DeMyers, a personal friend of Muhammad Ali for the past 20 years, has been associated with boxing for the past 25 years. His own boxing credentials include : former four -time Golden Glove and All - Europe Army and International Golden Glove Champion. He has traveled world-wide as special assistant with the United States Boxing Team and has worked closely with former World Heavyweight Champions Sonny Liston and Floyd Patterson.
