3 2 3 Working with clay, soil, bark, scrub and string, there is a visceral connection between the landscape and the figure in the sculptures by Laurence. It is one that speaks of the vitality of life pulled up through roots from the ground and forging itself into shape. It is worth thinking for a moment about that connection to the land. In a scientific analysis we would describe this as a recognition of how our own vitality draws from the earth into which we return as carbon based molecules. To see it described in sculptural form opens up a chamber of allusion, suggestion and thoughts to inspire, consider and contemplate. A visual reminder of the phrase significant form. One of the most pleasurable elements of these sculptures, at least for me, is seeing the making process so very much in evidence in the finished works. Laurence is an unusual sculptor in that he is intimately involved in the process of making from start to finish. Not for him the large professional bronze casting factories. From student learnings at the Royal College of Art and the teachings of Tissa Ranasinghe, it was from the street furnaces of Northern India on a Henry Moore travel scholarship that Laurence first learnt the alchemic opportunities of bronze casting with limited resources, craft and ingenuity. His sculptures are all cast by him and his team, often using techniques he alone has invented, often destroying the chance for replication in the process. 14 6 7 LAURENCE EDWARDS Born in 1967 and based in Suffolk, Edwards trained at Canterbury College of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he studied bronze casting and sculpture with Sir Antony Caro. After winning a Henry Moore Bursary, the Angeloni Prize for Bronze Casting and an Intach Travelling Scholarship, he studied traditional casting techniques in India and Nepal. His work is regularly exhibited in galleries in the UK and abroad, is in private and corporate collections and has won numerous public commissions.
