1 Washington TSA Cardboard Boat Challenge Objective: To design and build a boat using only cardboard and duct tape that will successfully carry two passengers across a swimming pool in the least amount of time. THIS EVENT HAS CHANGED DRAMATICALLY SINCE LAST YEAR!!! All boat pieces have to be pre-cut and brought with you to the event! There will be a 1 hour build session. During the building session, teams will have to give a 2 minute presentation to the judges on the merits of their design, the challenges they ran into while designing, and the aspects of teamwork, decision-making and problem solving that they used. Students may not work on cardboard boat videos during breakout sessions. All videos must be submitted by the end of the lunch period, or at a time designated as the deadline. Teams are not required to make a video. Advisors, prior to the conference: Copy and complete the Cardboard Boat Registration Forms for all students, and have them signed by their parents. all documents to boats@washingtontsa.org Split up your team members, if you will have more than one team from your school. Each team must have at least 4 people on it, and everyone from your school must participate in this activity. Teams, prior to the conference: Research possible boat designs Develop a technical drawing for the boat design (8.5 X11 size) Generate a list of the design merits for the boat Build and test the boat design Develop a 2 minute presentation for the judges Pre-cut all boat elements (but do not build anything) Film all aspects of design, build, testing, etc. for inclusion in boat video Event Guidelines: The ENTIRE BOAT must be BUILT ONLY OF CARDBOARD and duct tape. NO pre-formed or plasticized cardboard may be used this means NO cardboard tubes, or cardboard covered with plastic labels! ALL cardboard must be pre-cut prior to attending Fall Leadership. Any extra cardboard must be taken home by the chapter.

2 1 roll of duct tape will be provided to each team when their design is approved. Teams may not bring their own duct tape, or use partial rolls from other teams. Only 1 roll can be used per team. The cardboard should be standard cardboard typically used to package appliances or supplies. (Any type of TREATED CARDBOARD that has been processed in such a way as to make the cardboard waterproof MAY NOT BE USED. The emphasis is on the fun-filled process of turning discarded cardboard boxes into floating boats.) The propulsion system, including oars and paddles, must be made from regular cardboard only!! DO NOT use single-sided cardboard, as it disintegrates in the water (single-sided is flat on one side, and corrugated on the other side). Decorations and props that are not part of the boat s hull or structure are allowed as long as they in no way effect the strength or buoyancy of the boat. (i.e. Team Flag, Team name, logo, mascot, etc..judges may rule on this if necessary) Paint on the exterior of the boat is not allowed. Dress Code: All students in the boats will wear shorts and tshirts, or appropriate swimwear, for this event. Do Not Paint Your Boat! It stains the pool. Where the crew sits CANNOT BE ENCLOSED (the boat crew must be able to get in and out of the boat easily). SURFBOARD and RAFT style designs are NOT ALLOWED. Consider "staying dry" as part of the challenge. Boats will be launched from the side of the pool at the start of the event. If there is any doubt about the construction, the judges reserve the right to use a probe, such as an ice pick, to test and verify that only cardboard has been used. At the Leadership conference: Teams will receive a team number that will be added to the boat and any design documents. Teams will also receive a time slot for their presentation to the judging panel. Students will submit the following at check-in: Technical Drawing(s) and Design Merits These should be submitted in sheet protectors, and inserted back to back. Please insure that your school name is included on the documents, and add the team number that you are assigned. Teams will have one hour to build their boat, prior to racing. During that hour, teams will be required to make a presentation to the judges about the merits of their design, challenges they ran into while designing, and the aspects of teamwork, decision-making and problem solving that they used. Key requirements for build The propulsion system, including oars and paddles, must be made from cardboard also!! Taping a piece of cardboard to the hands does not qualify as a paddle. Paddles must be a separate element that does not use hand power. Duct Tape is only allowed to assemble and reinforce seams. It is not allowed to wrap, encase or waterproof the boat. No part of the boat can be pre-assembled prior to the assembly time. When the construction time limit is reached, each team will transport their boat to the Aquatic Center.

3 Competition Information: All elements must be pre-cut prior to attending the conference. If teams need to bring extra cardboard, they must supply their own cutting tools. All teams must transport any unused cardboard home with them. One roll of standard silver duct tape will be provided to each team. 3M Multi Use ( If your team wants to use colored duct tape rather than silver, they need to provide it. It will be used INSTEAD of the roll WTSA would provide. Limit is still 60 yards. Each Competing Team must have their boat assembled prior to the published start time. No additional time will be given. Only regular cardboard and one roll of regular duct tape may be used. Please ensure that the 2 members in the boat know how to swim, or bring Coast Guard approved and properly fitted personal floatation devices (PFD) for them to wear. Lifeguards will be on duty. Boats will only be raced once. Times will be used to determine the winner. Races will be started from the side or end of the pool. A judge will say on your mark, get set, go. This is when the stopwatch will be started! Part of the challenge will be to enter your boat and begin paddling. Time stops when a team member who is in or on their boat touches the designated finish-line end of the pool. If a team s boat disintegrates, or falls apart, or sinks to the point that the members are swimming instead of paddling, the team is then declared as a DNF (Did Not Finish) entrant and no time will be entered for that team. The judges will make a decision on this if necessary. When judges or state officers ask you to exit the pool, remove yourselves and your boat ASAP. Continuing to try and paddle a floundering boat is grounds for disqualification. Each team will designate 2-3 team members to pull the wet boat out of the water, and carry it to the dumpster/recycling bin. Each team will also designate 1-2 people to help with overall clean-up at the end of the boat racing event. If a team leaves materials behind, they will be subjected to disqualification from the race! What each team must provide for themselves: Cardboard pre-cut Any cutting tools they may need (scissors, box cutters, etc.) Technical drawings and design merits submitted at check-in TEAM MEMBERS a minimum of 4 are required! Lifejackets if needed Required dress: shorts, tshirt, and/or swimsuit Towels and dry clothes to change into after the race. Spirited chapter members! What will be provided for the race participants: Swimming Pool Judges with stopwatches Assembly area (located outside the pool area) Cardboard Graveyard area to dispose of the wet, soggy cardboard. (teams must move their remains)

4 Rule Violations: Use of Duct Tape to completely wrap or encase the boat. Duct Tape is only allowed to assemble and reinforce seams. Failure to abide by any race rule or direction of race official shall be cause for disqualifications. The decision of the Judges shall be final. No part of the boat can be pre-assembled prior to the assembly time. No pre-formed or plasticized cardboard may be used. Awards: The following Awards will be recognized: Race Champions fastest time Titanic Award most spectacular sinking Spirit Award most spirited crew Design Award judges award for best technical design Presentation Award judges award for best presentation Video Award given to the team that makes the best video of the event.

By signing this document and attending this event, I agree to abide by the safety rules or guidelines governing this event. If needed, I will wear my PFD at all times when on or in the water during the cardboard boat races. I waive any claim, or right to make any claim for any injury of any kind, and/or any other claim, which might arise in the course of this event against the Washington Technology Student Association, Shoreline Pool, Spartan Recreation Center, or any group or individuals involved in this event.
