COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WRAP-UP

LOGAN RIVER VISION: THE PROJECT THE PROJECT The Logan River Vision is a transformational project for the City of Logan. The Logan River Vision will be developed from the community to shape the development of the Logan River over the next 50 years. Logan City Council is committed to improving its understanding of the value of the river, its history and what our community sees as its future. Over an intensive 10-week engagement period (31 of May until 14 August, 2016), Logan City Council engaged with the community through a number of engagement methods. The website com.au allowed the community to provide feedback through Logan River stories (the past), current activities (the present) and the Logan River Vision (the future), while, unique face-to-face sessions at corporate events and pop-up stands across the city allowed more opportunities for the community to provide feedback and talk about the project with the River Vision Team. The centerpiece of the engagement was a 50-Year Community Visioning Workshop, this provided a forum to discuss the river, current perceptions of it, access and opportunities along it and to start identifying overlaps, synergies and priority locations along the river. It also provided a collaborative setting, to visualise how the Logan community would want to use the river over the next 50 years. Once finalised, the vision will incorporate what the community has told us as well as economic development, local business, industry, aquaculture, tourism, transportation, conservation and recreation. The Logan River Vision will take in the length of the river within the City s boundaries. Start of visioning at the community engagement workshop, August 11,

3 Over the 10 week period of the community engagement, Logan City Council undertook: 757 INVITATIONS to properties along the Logan River to contribute to the vision 105,043 PEOPLE REACHED through 19 Facebook and 1 LinkedIn posts 10,000 ENGAGED community members 565 1,360 VIEWS of the River Vision video VISITS to Logan River vision website rivervision.com.au 5,000 DISTRIBUTIONS of the River Vision booklets throughout the City of Logan 14 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES within 10 suburbs across the city of Logan 63 ATTENDEES TO 2 WORKSHOPS community and industry

LOGAN RIVER VISION: THE FINDINGS Responses included: PAST 120 individual stories on what the community once enjoyed along and on the Logan River 169 individual current activities undertaken along and on the Logan River 678 individual ideas for the future use of the Logan River When reflecting on the history of the river, the community recalled places along the river that were busy with activities such as swimming and fishing. The community also recalled the water being clean and safe. Those who commented with these stories, consider these values important and would like to see them returned. Activities that the residents have enjoyed along the Logan River: Family & friends celebrations and gettogethers Swimming Transportation of produce all along along and across the river the river Boating & Enjoying being close to fishing nature Water supply & irrigation Camping Raft races Past and present use Past use 4

5 PRESENT Based on community and industry comments, activities in the river like boating, fishing and kayaking are occurring in specific locations. Boat ramps and pontoons were highlighted as important direct access to the river. Overall, visiting the river as a destination is sporadic and particularly used by those who live in close proximity. The growth of activities that use the river and surrounds as a base (e.g. parkrun), is seen as an immediate opportunity to engage residents with the river. Activities that the residents currently enjoy along the Logan River: Family & friends celebrations and get-togethers Swimming in fresh Playgrounds water Exercise walking, running, training Boating & fishing Kayaking Golf courses Regularly drive over it Enjoying being close to nature Water supply & irrigation Common Concerns: Based on community and industry comments, current perceptions of the river are that it is a missed opportunity for the City of Logan and pollution and water quality are ongoing concerns. Lack of amenities along the river was another concern for people in the city as well as those wishing to visit. FUTURE Following the 10-week community engagement period, it became apparent that three key themes were highlighted. The community want to connect to the river in a fun and playful way, they would like to visit the river as a destination and that they are concerned about the river s health in the long-term. Three key themes: River River River Play Destinations Health Other perceived concerns raised by the community include flooding, climate variability and rapid urban development. A largely private ownership along the length of the river was also a challenge that was identified by some members of the community and that close partnerships between landholders and Logan City Council is needed. The connection and activities along the river, will guide the development of the draft Logan River Vision through seven precincts. Seven Precinct Areas: 1. New Community 4. The River Common Frontier 5. Urban Riverside 2. River View 6. River Experiences 3. Celebrating Growing 7. River plain and Production

LOGAN RIVER VISION: THREE KEY THEMES RIVER PLAY Ensuring the community connects to the Logan River through a range of new and fun forms of activities. Our community expressed many ideas for how they want to enjoy the Logan River into the future. Some of the ideas include: parklands, trails, walkways, rowing and kayaking facilities, river cruises, jet ski zones, river festivals, zip lines, tree top walks, waterparks, marinas and boat ramps. Some of the futuristic ideas included building a giant infinity swing over the river and a floating environmental education centre. We would like to see more access points for the public to go fishing, launch canoes have picnics. Grey and Sheryl, Logan Village I live on the river and we would like to see it used for maximum enjoyment to the public, for example: fishing, kayaking, water skiing, cruises, seafood sales, prawns, fish, etc. and the river dredged at the mouth. Community workshop Hire canoes and go up to the river like in Brisbane. Use the parks for the kids. Sitting along the river and having a coffee watching the grandkids or great grandkids playing. Taya, Logan Reserve Good kayak access, multisport events like Wildthing Race in 50 years time. Garth, Rochedale South 6

7 Logan River, Alberton Learn and share stories of the river with other nationalities and get them involved in activities along the river. Leah, Loganholme Picnic area, cafes, trees, gardens, art, sculpture, walkways, music, orchestra band music. Judith, Tamborine Enjoy the day trips along the river and would love to go on a boat trip in the future. Jimboomba Field Days 2016 Run, live, party, relax. Carole, Shailer Park Swim with my great grandchildren - safely. Danielle, Slacks Creek Swimming, floating picnic, floating Aqua Park, art in the park, canoe/kayaking hire, Markets, Best selfie comp. at the river, boot camp, pool and spa, ball games, concerts in the park. parkrun Meadowbrook I think it would be nice to see a walking / riding trail along the river, so people can see the beauty of the river, and sit and reflect on what is here and what would have been when Captain Logan first sailed up the river. With the big red cedar trees along the bank. Jenny, Unknown

LOGAN RIVER VISION: THREE KEY THEMES RIVER DESTINATIONS Creating multi-function and innovative places for people and nature that will allow the community to enjoy, celebrate and use the river. Taking advantage of the potential of the river as a tourism destination and a place for Logan residents to enjoy. Our community expressed ideas for both locals and tourists to come and enjoy the Logan River. Event areas along the river for music, dance and culture. NAIDOC Week Celebration Some ideas include: world-class dining and entertainment areas, water parks, floating river markets, walkways to connect the length of the river with educational signage, transportation corridor e.g. hover crafts, green and iconic bridges, experiential and adaptive connections from land to water. A central tourism space, unique to Logan to bring business and allow for different demographics to move into the city. Beenleigh Early Bird Markets With improvements to the health of the River, one could create a community hub where one can meet friends for a meal, feed the ducks and watch the river flow by. These suggestions would lead to Logan City having a six-star rating drawcard, the Logan River. Michael, Bethania Introduce a replica paddle steamers as they were 150 years ago and take tourists from Logan Village to Beenleigh. Jimboomba Field Days Cafes, restaurants, etc; all of which will encourage public use and promote pride and sense of community. Additionally such projects and parklands should be linked via bike/walking trails that meander along the river to take in the beauty and tranquility of the river. Darren, Worongary Safe and state-ofthe-art recreation facility for families. A.T., Cedar Creek 8

9 Logan River, Meadowbrook Boat shed (major) along the river to facilitate school training. This will bring more people to the river and result in greater use and connection overall. Opportunities for viewing nature and wildlife from the sheds. Jayne, Logan Reserve Buy fresh produce from river. Hyperdome Shopping Centre Caravans, camping, campervans and motorhomes. The industry is screaming out for sites. What an opportunity to bring interstate grey nomads and families and international backpackers to our river. Not many places in south-east Qld where people could park a caravan and throw out a crab pot for a mud crab. James, Ormeau Hills Floating skate park, water park, pub, shops, shark cage, aquarium. Dylan, Blake, Bailey - Marsden SHS Ride along it, wine bars, dining, more ramps, markets, more community activities like parkrun. Belinda, Springwood Catch a boat which I can dine on. Jozsef, Logan Reserve Floating dance studio with blue, purple and pink lighting on a silver boat, clean river, house boats, hovercrafts, entertainment (singing and dancing), music festival and fireworks. Vanessa and Jessica - Windaroo SHS Market Gardens using the rich soil along the banks and taking advantage of the flooding periodically to provide organic food to the city. B&R, Ormiston

LOGAN RIVER VISION: THREE KEY THEMES RIVER HEALTH Reconnect the Logan River corridor to allow for natural habitat, function and improved water quality. Corridor connections will improve the river s health and beauty and sustain Logan s culture, lifestyle and livelihood. Our community expressed a great understanding that the health of the river is directly linked to land-use in the catchment and how that land-use can be shaped in the future. Some river health ideas include: educating people about the values and importance the river plays for people, the environment and the economy. Other ideas include reactivating flood plains, using the power of the tide to generate electricity, protecting fish habitat and best practice agriculture for local produce. Ecologically sustainable development. Industry Workshop As a natural habitat, I see Queen s land/public land, revegetated along the river. In the long run, I dream of a river in pristine condition to be enjoyed by all. Michael, Bethania We d love to see some serious investment in revegetating Logan s waterways. Many aquatic species that have been lost from Brisbane still live in Logan - but they are in trouble. ANGFA Enviro-Education So wildlife can thrive. So our children can see our Centre. wildlife in their natural habitat. Jimboomba Field Days Industry Workshop 10

11 Logan River, Meadowbrook Letting residents know the value of the waterways and its nature. Community workshop Clean enough to take grandkids to swim in and enjoy with native plants and fauna to show them and teach them about the river. Jimboomba Field Days Keep the river: alive, fresh and fun. Jimboomba Field Days Rehabilitate flood plain waterways, let native plants improve the water clarity. Jimboomba Field Days The existing parkland surrounding the river should be maintained for both environmental sustainability and broad community use. Warren, Bethania Protect the banks, preserve the natural beauty of the river. Vandra, Cornubia I would like the river to stay as it is. I would like future people to be able to appreciate the Logan River in its natural state. Property owners along the river where they live, should look after their frontage. Council has two parks on the river near me. They are infested with weeds and lantana and I see the same happening to any further Council owned property. Max, Waterford Healthy river which supports our economy, people and nature. Community workshop Address the pollution particularly sediment. Increased revegetation along the river and education and regulation for riverine controls to reduce sediment and improve attitudes. Stronger regulation and river pollution, including sediment. Don, Jimboomba

LOGAN RIVER VISION: LOGAN RIVER CORRIDOR AND ITS PRECINCTS LOGAN RIVER CORRIDOR AND ITS PRECINCTS Following community engagement, it has become While recognising distinguishing features of each clear that the Logan River has distinct precincts that precinct, some precinct characteristics overlap and contain key assets, areas of under-utilisation and some exist along the length of the river. For example, early opportunities. tourism opportunities may be highlighted in all seven precincts along the river and not just the hot spot Each precinct has been given a title that best area of the River Experiences precinct. represents the vision for each section. DRAFT PRECINCT VISION: 1 NEW COMMUNITY FRONTIER Creating a harmonious relationship between the community and the natural environment to promote intergenerational prosperity. 2 RIVER VIEW A destination where we celebrate our productive land and sustainable living. 3 CELEBRATING GROWING AND PRODUCTION Healthy and accessible community hub that links local produce to the community, using the river as a gateway THE RIVER COMMON A multi-purpose corridor connecting community green spaces and the river for experiential opportunities. 14 LOGAN RIVER VISION: WHERE TO FROM HERE? FROM IDEAS TO VISION The feedback, stories and ideas from the community, business and industry has helped re-introduce the Logan River to the City of Logan and beyond its boundaries. The ideas received, will help form the Logan River Vision and promote the river as a key environmental, economic and social asset for the City of Logan. Logan City Council is currently collating all the ideas, identified opportunities and priorities along the length of the river and within the seven precincts, to develop the Logan River Vision and implementation plan. We thank you for the stories, thoughts and ideas and for pushing the boundaries of what you will see on the Logan River over the coming years. Start of planning at the Industry Representative workshop, August 19, For more information about the Logan River Vision please visit or contact Logan City Council s River Vision Project Team by environment@logan.qld.gov.au 14
