BEHIND THE SCENES - From an idea to a film The first try In January 2009, Martin went to Cabo san Lucas for the first time. He hired a kayak, which he launched at sea from a big game boat.

Martin himself was not at all prepared when a marlin suddenly took his bait. With the wrong equipment, and not at all in shape for something like this, he stood no chance.

Together with his friends, Pasi and Fredrik, they decided to do a serious attempt of making a modern version of The old man and the sea.

1 BEHIND THE SCENES - From an idea to a film The first try In January 2009, Martin went to Cabo san Lucas for the first time. He hired a kayak, which he launched at sea from a big game boat. His intention was to get a feeling of being alone in a kayak far out at sea. No one actually thought that he would catch any marlin or even get a bite. Martin himself was not at all prepared when a marlin suddenly took his bait. With the wrong equipment, and not at all in shape for something like this, he stood no chance. The rod broke pretty quick after a short and intensive ride in the kayak. This scene is shown in the beginning of the film. But the seed was sewn; he realized that it was possible. Together with his friends, Pasi and Fredrik, they decided to do a serious attempt of making a modern version of The old man and the sea. For one year they improved their physique and technique and thoroughly tested equipment for fishing, communication and safety. A well prepared team. Alone out at sea... Second expedition In January 2010 they are back in Cabo - a small, but well-prepared team. The goal is to do what the old man, Santiago, did - to catch a marlin from a small boat, in this case a kayak. The method: angling with a baitfish, sitting still waiting for the marlin to strike. When the actual old man, Santiago, were out for days, they instead took turns every hour in the kayak. The mother ship and the rest of the team were always ready to assist, if something would go wrong. The team had decided to tag and release all the fish and therefore a circlehook was used. They set the limit for fighting the fish and touching the leader to one hour, in order for the fish to be released Training in Swedish waters.

When the first marlin had taken the bait and the kayak was towed out to sea, Captain Winkler grabbed the radio and started reporting to all other boats. The whole Cabo Fishing fleet now talked about the kayak-project and La Brisa. The crew and the three Swedish fishermen worked really well together and they accomplished the mission in a way no one could even dream of. Pasi, Martin and Fredrik all managed to hook up a marlin from the kayak, to fight it within an hour, touch the leader and happily tag and release it. The successful mission drew attention from fishing media in Denmark, Norway, Germany and Sweden. Now The Billfish Foundation was directly involved in the project through scientist Dr Russell Nelson. But there were no fish! La Nina a period of cold weather had struck Cabo san Lucas. There were no marlin at all in the waters outside Cabo. Having an expensive film crew on location and no fish, they had to focus on other scenes like landscapes, pelicans and surroundings. The final scene, where the three happy fishermen walk into a bar to celebrate mission accomplished, was made at this point. And by the way, The Hemingway Bar in the film, doesn t really exist. Solmar resort supplied the living and the Pisces fleet, the Minerva fleet and the Solmar fleet helped with boats and crews, everyone hoping for the team to finish the film. They used the oldfashion Santiago-way of fishing when the fish was aggregated, like late afternoons at Golden Gate Bank or outside the lighthouse of Cabo. To increase the chances, they also let out lines from one or two extra rods the mother ship. The kayak was fishing close by with one rod. If a fish took a bait from one of the rods on the boat, the kayakfishermen switched rod and made the strike in the kayak. When the fish was hard to find they fished with bait fish from the mother ship to cover a lot of water and try many different spots in a day. When a marlin took the baitfish, they quickly launched the kayak into the water, hooked up and started the fight from the kayak. Having a good mother ship with a skilled crew was essential to make this film. The fighting scenes in the film are put together from many different fights from different occasions. The footage comes from several cameras shooting from the mother ship and, sometimes, from an additional film-boat or film kayak. Go-pro cameras were mounted on the kayak. Other interesting scenes All the stills of Hemingway are authentic and come from JFK Presidential Library. The footage of Hemingway fishing and writing in a bar, are reenactments. The man acting like Ernest Hemingway in these sequences is Jan Olsson, a Swedish big game fisherman that looks very much like Ernest himself. Photographer Terry Maas shoots the fabulous underwater footage of marlin hunting for sardines, whales and sea lions outside Cabo san Lucas.
