2 WHO IS BALLYHASS LAKES? KAYAK INSTRUCTOR WHAT IS THE KAYAK INSTRUCTOR SCHOLARSHIP? COURSE INTRODUCTION Ballyhass lakes Activity Centre is Ireland s premier outdoor experience provider. We have over 15 different activities on site based around an old disused quarry. The centre of which is our own crystal clear 13 acre spring water lake. It is the perfect place to be introduced to a range of outdoor sports. Kayaking has been our No.1 water activity for nearly a decade and we now want to use our skills and spread our love for this sport by taking 10 local students and making them the best kayakers we can. Falling under the Ballyhass Outdoor project, (our initiative to get more people into the outdoors) we will be offering 10 participants from any local schools the chance to take part in a 16 week scholarship programme that involves an afternoon a week for 3 hours. Each week our coaches will go through everything you need to know to get you hooked on Kayaking. Plus loads of time on the water to practice the skills plus instructor classes to get you closer to leading your own group on the water. In addition to time at Ballyhass we will be doing up to three river trips during the course of the scholarship so that you can practice on the thrilling moving water of our local rivers. WHAT DOES EACH STUDENT ACCEPTED GET? Over 20 hours water time. Every participant will be part of a professionally shot training video edit at the end of the year!!!!! HOW DO I APPLY? To apply you need to fill out the accompanying application form and give it back to your teacher. You need to make sure you can commit to the full course and also able to get to and from Ballyhass on a Wednesday afternoon. There will be students from other local schools taking part so remember you are representing your school throughout the course and then representing Ballyhass for the rest of your Kayaking career! If there are a lot of applications there may also be interviews for the available places. Remember even if you don t get on the scholarship, everyone who applies gets a free taster session! 4 TEACHER INFORMATION COURSE OUTCOME MODULE: LOCATION: DURATION: KAYAK INSTRUCTOR COURSE BALLYHASS LAKES WAKEPARK, CECILSTOWN, MALLOW CO.CORK 16 WEEKS DURATION. 3 HOURS PER WEEK. PROPOSED WEDNESDAY 1-4PM WHAT IS THE KAYAK INSTRUCTOR SCHOLARSHIP? KEY ACTIVITIES: Kayaking has been on of the key activities at Ballyhass for almost a decade now. Always one of our most popular activities we always ensure to get any group that comes through the centre out on the water. Everyone loves their introduction here so we wanted to create a group of kayak ambassadors that will encourage their love and passion for the sport to their friends, family and local community. Through out the 16 week scholarship course, participants will learn how to be competent kayakers to a standard of ICU level three self proficiency. They will be given the skills to manage groups of beginners on intro session, and be fully aware of the water safety issues that arise around a water environment. In the course of the scholarship they will also learn key coaching and training practices that are transferable across all fields. They will be required to both utilize written and video blog formats to record their experience on the scholarship. There will be at least two off site trips and a chance to bring their friends for a session. REQUIREMENTS: Participants must be 14 yrs or older and must be able to have travel arrangements to Ballyhass Lakes each week. They are required to attend each week and complete all of the extra course work required by the coaches. Among the extra course work, participants will be required to keep a diary blog about their experiences and participate in an overall video series that will be filmed over the sixteen week course. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: STUDENT COURSE WORK: Reach a level of kayaking that will allow the participants to take part on a moving water river trip. Demonstrate an understanding of the need for safety in and around a water environment. Learn valuable coaching skills and teaching techniques that will be useful across a wide range of group situations. Group management techniques Blogging skills both written and video Develop an understanding of the history and potential future of kayaking in Ireland and across the world. Participants are expected to gain confidence from working with others in a changing business environment 6 written diary blog posts (approx 3 hours) Participation in 3 video diary blogs and end of year wakeboarding video edit. Project research folder (comprised of 10 x 1 hour homework) Will be required to present their folder project and video edits to their class at the end of the year along side Ballyhass coaches and trainers.

SEPT 28TH: Level 1 & 2 Skills / gearing up / carrying kayaks OCT 5TH: Edging drills / capsizing & rescues. OCT 12Th: Intro to the roll and rolling techniques. OCT 19th: 1 month video diary, Level 2 assessment. OCT 16th: Revising week 1 to 5 and prep for off site moving water trip. NOV 2ND: Off site moving water trip; Lee fields, Sluice Kinsale, Lower Bandon all potentials. NOV 9TH: Level 3 Skills. Edging, Bracing Strokes, Sculling/High Brace & Rolling NOV 16TH: Race Skills & Forward stroke clinic. NOV 23RD: Intro to Instructing - Group & condition assessment + Paddle & Boat talk NOV 30TH: Serious prep for moving water, stern rudder, rolling & sculling DEC 7TH: Upper Lower/ Bandon River Trip WINTER BREAK 2017 MAR 15TH: River Rescue Clinic - Throw Bags, kayak recovery, towing, knots. MAR 22ND: Prep for delivering kayak session - Running Games - Basic Strokes MAR 29TH:Mock Kayak Session including meet & greets safety talks etc. APR 5TH: Run your own kayak session for your friends!!
