2 So what is Concrete Canoe? Concrete Canoe is a national competition within ASCE where teams are challenged to design and build a canoe made of concrete which is raced with up to four paddlers. The event is judged evenly between four categories: What are our goals and plans for next year s team? 1. A lighter canoe Last year our canoe, Al Capone, weighed in at 285 lbs. We believe we could shed ~80 lbs utilizing pre stressed concrete using pre tensioning cables. 2. Continued success during races This year, we are losing many experienced paddlers. In order to compensate for the loss in experience, we will engage in heavy recruitment for new athletic talent while increasing practice frequency. Note that this figure does not include allteamactivities and safetyequipment. Note thatsomeprices areestimated. Figure 4:2016 BudgetAllocation. 3. Higher Quality Control The 2016 canoe needed hundreds of hours of sanding to give it a smooth, hydrodynamic contour. This inconsistent hull was due to a male mold process with limited quality control. We are currently researching new QAQC methods and molding techniques, such as dual molding or alternative methods to male mold casting. This could save significant man hours for other tasks, while producing a higher quality product.
