1 FLOTILLA REPORT Cheboygan Flotilla had a busy summer with many events. I have put the events in chronological order for ease of writing and not getting off topic. May started off with a Northern Michigan Expo at Cheboygan Fair Center. We personed a booth for three days May 17, 18, &19. We also taught a short safety class for the weekend. We signed up VSCs and attendees interested in a Boating Class. June found its way into boat training for our remaining Operations folks. We had people attend Charlevoix as well as St Ignace Boat Schools. All people who attended were able to regain their qualifications. Jim Ketchum QE-ed at both and we provided facilities, coxswains, and crew. Boat Schools are a Great Place to learn and share knowledge with other coxswains and crew members. Sharing ideas and information and getting together after the training was much needed. Fun was had by all! Our instructor pool of 3 +1 was busy with teaching BS&S class for the National Forest Service and a class of Boating Safety, Navigation, etc on Mackinac Island for approximately 40 people during their Lilac Festival. More classes are needed to increase our recruiting pool for the Auxiliary. We are getting ready to get information into the local papers for the spring. Ideas are welcome!!!! July 4 th found our facility on Mullett Lake patrolling for the fireworks, giving us an exceptional view and assisting the community as well. August 17 th and 18 th put us on the line for the 65 th Top of Michigan Marathon boat races on Mullett and Burt Lakes. The weather was perfect both days and business was slow. However, we still managed to tow a few race boats in. Our neighbors to the south FC Bill Kumpula, Crew Ernie and Marilyn Stewart assisted the sheriff pulling out a racer and returning him home without his boat! Coxswain Don Warren and Crew Ron Kovell and newbie Glen Pemberton pulled in a couple of racers with their boat and also managed a SAR in locating a 26 Quest boat on Mullett lake while patrolling and tow it to safety to their dock. All in all, it was a very successful race weekend. 2 September, Labor Day, we again patrolled the Mackinac Bridge walk. Coxswain Ken Larson led the Upper Boat under the Bridge with a couple other Auxiliary facilities in 7 seas, while the Warren facility with Jim Ketchum aboard on flat waters in the Cheboygan River. We watched the Cheboygan Bridge walk that a few hundred people attended. We did not get any jumpers!!! And the Bridge Opened for the Bois Blanc Ferry. Seas were very flat and navigable! That ended our Operations season. All facilities are out of the water waiting for it to get hard! The Auxiliary District Conference, held Sept 7, 8, & 9 at the Shanty Creek Resort in Bellaire, was poorly attended by our members. One of our members received an award from the Sector for Commendation for Volunteer Service. Don Warren also taught the Flotilla Leadership Course at the conference. Disappointing that no one from our Division was in the class! Only Detroit area students were in attendance. September 13 thru 23, our flotilla commander and his HR staff officer attended the America s Cup sailing races in San Francisco, CA. We managed to get on the water and watch the Cup stay in the US for another race season. I not sure these new sailing vessels will catch on to the boating public at $15.5 million per boat! September 24, 25, & 26 found 5 of our members +1 (different one) assist the Cutter Mackinaw in serving meals to the Crew. It was extremely rewarding and interesting. September 25 found Sue Warren and husband staffing a Coast Guard booth at the Northern Central Michigan College college night. We had several young people request information on enlisting, CG Academy, and we even tried to recruit some parents to the Auxiliary. Our RBS program is increasing gradually, as well as our VSC program. We have gained a couple of new people into these programs. Our HR program has applications completed and submitted for two new members and we have three additional ones almost ready for submission. We are also starting paperwork on a transfer member from downstate. We are always looking for new people up here, so pass on our information to any one you know who MIGHT be interested. Our elections for 2014 will be held on Tuesday, 8 October at the Moorings at We are a busy few and need new members. We need to branch outside of operations, as is all the CG Auxiliary. But, not done for Public Education: We will work with NCMC to be in the 2014 course offering for the spring of NCMC has already discussed this and expanding to more courses is a topic! East Jordan public schools have contacted us with regards to setting up a Boat Safety class to help educate their young boaters. This one is in its infancy and should be fun a great venue to improve public relations and knowledge of the Aux! Program Visits: Good show this year but, not as good as last year. Changes in active staff participation in 2013 will require slight adjustments to coverage next year then we should be right back at respectable 2012 levels. Vessel Exams: Pretty much tapered off at the end of the summer as expected. I had 2 requests and only one follow through. News: Station Charlevoix has a new OIC. John Tribfelner. Chief Burleigh retired at the COC ceremony August 2, What we are doing - Upcoming events: We will have our election and COW at the next meeting along with a dinner. A bit ahead of schedule but timely with our snowbird members. Prep for 2014: o Boat shows o Boat Safety Classes and education opps. o Planning to work closer with CG-gold side in OPS. o Improving schedule/plan for Program visits and Vessel Checks o More ideas to come with new management! Respectfully submitted, Glen Stolt, FC Charlevoix ************************************************************** FLOTILLA REPORT ROSCOMMON This boating season has been an eventful one for flotilla Since a number of flotilla members leave the state for the winter season, including the FC and VFC, we started our formal flotilla meetings in April. During the winter months, members were busy in many different ways for the Auxiliary, including planning for the upcoming season, doing the new on-line mandated training classes, and purchasing equipment for their facilities. Public Affairs We started the season with an emphasis on National Safe Boating Week. Our flotilla partnered with the South Higgins State Park to provide a boater safety class at the park in May. We provided a booth with giveaways at a new park dedication. We also had a float with members marching in the Houghton Lake Memorial Day parade; and provided a safety patrol for a boat parade on Higgins Lake. A new public affairs event we participated in this year was the National Night Out sponsored by the Roscommon Sheriff Department on 6 August. Many communities around the country celebrate this event but this was the first for our county. All of the community emergency responders brought their equipment to the Walmart parking lot and aimed their program for the evening toward children. The goal was to help children become familiar with the different services so they would not be fearful if they ever had to be helped by emergency personnel. Our flotilla had a booth, provided a game with prizes along with coloring books; plus once again, Coastie was a big hit. The Sheriff has indicated this is going to be an annual event. Two of our certified Coastie members also provided Coastie at the annual Firemen's Memorial celebration in Roscommon, MI.

Ops The flotilla's coxswain and crew were once again busy with on-water patrols and training throughout the summer. We sent a facility with a coxswain and crew to the St. Ignace Boat School in June.

3 Ops The flotilla's coxswain and crew were once again busy with on-water patrols and training throughout the summer. We sent a facility with a coxswain and crew to the St. Ignace Boat School in June. (Both members thought that was a valuable event.) We provided a facility, coxswain and three crew to provide a safety patrol for the 100 th anniversary celebration of the Grayling National Guard Camp, during the fireworks event on the lake at the camp. At the request of Chief Beatty of Station St. Ignace, we sent a coxswain and two crew to provide a safety patrol for the Indian River Boat Races on the Saturday and Sunday at Indian River. Another crew assisted an additional flotilla's facility. On two different Saturdays this summer during patrols, our coxswain made their facilities available to members of other flotillas who needed to have check rides. This sharing of our resources with other Auxiliarsts who do not have such easy access to water and facilities, does a great deal to build camaraderie in the ranks. Once again our flotilla partnered with the Roscommon Marine Patrol during our safety patrols. We notified the county's central dispatch (911 service) and gave them our phone number and let them know we would be on the water in case they received calls from boaters who were in distress. They would call us and we could respond. This summer the marine patrol purchased marine radios so they could talk to us on the water. The Marine Patrol values us as a force multiplier in dealing with boater safety issues; plus we feel it makes our patrols of more value to the community. We did offer coxswain and crew to participate in the Labor Day Bridge Walk but we were not needed this year. New Members We are pleased that we have the paperwork turned in and are awaiting the approval for the enrollment of two new members. We have a working membership committee that was started this year. Vessel Safety Checks Once again we provided safety checks at the marina of our meeting room and other locations on Higgins and Houghton Lakes. Our VFC, Ernie Stuart provided checks at his Florida residence this past winter and at Drummond Island; he has reached 100 checks. We congratulate him. Aviation Our flotilla has a member who owns a plane which is a facility. He and our observers completed 16 missions from his Roscommon Airport base. Among the missions were observing the Chicago to Mackinaw Race and being sent to Lake Superior on a SAR mission. Boater Safety Classes Besides providing the class in partnership with the state park mentioned above, we provided three additional classes at our meeting room at the Gerrish Township marina. 4 ************************************************************************************* FLOTILLA REPORT ALPENA Ops: Station Alpena started B-O week-ends on May 18 and Aux crews covered every other Week-end through Labor Day and the last three week-ends in Sept. In addition Aux crews were on stand-by (B-2) status during the gold-side's leave days. Hours completed: Underway 489 CG support 460 SAR stand-by 3040 Sta. Alpena was inspected by the Ready for Operations (RFO) team on June 6 and 7. Aux and CG crews worked together during inspection of PPE gear, the station's RBS-25 (25690) and trailer. All qualified coxswains and crew completed written tests and on-water Qualifications. Station Alpena again passed their RFO with SAT (passing) scores. Fourth of July Aux and Cg crews provided a safety zone for Alpena's annual fireworks. July 18 through July 28 was Alpena's Brown Trout Festival. Aux and CG crews provided SAR coverage through-out the event. Plus, safety zone coverage for the Ladies tourney And the Pepsi challenge tourney. VE The Flotilla conducted several blitzes in Alpena, Rockport and Presque Isle harbors. Completed- 59 MDV Completed - 50 PA - Flotilla members attended Alpena Public Safety Days May at the Alpena Mall. June 22 Flotilla members attended Rockport Recreation Day hosted by the DNR July 4 th at the Alpena Maritime Fest at NOAA Sanctuary Building Flotilla members had boating safety booth. Our members also hosted Coastie who entertained and educated many youngsters. PE Taught Boating Safety classes on; June 1, Alpena, June 16 Beaver Lake, and July 12 Lost Lk Woods. Fellowship On Sun. Aug. 4 it was the Coast Guard s 223 Birthday so Sta Alpena had a party. We cooked out at Sta and members and CG personnel brought dishes to pass. It was a good-time for all. 5 * FLOTILLA REPORT MANISTIQUE Paul Johnson was very busy with Vessel Inspections at Pine Island, FL, Ft. Meyers, FL where he spends the winters. He also did Inspections at Duluth, MN. On his way back to Manistique. Paul did Inspections early July and for the three day salmon derby late July at Manistique. Paul did the 2-day Sabot Boat Training at Charlevoix MI early June. Later on in June he went to St. Ignace for additional Training and on water time. He also went to St. Ignace for working with that auxiliary for Labor Day Bridge Walk. Paul would also be interested in a position with Division if there is something that can work with his going south for the winter. Bob Williams also did the late June 21st and 22nd Training at St Ignace. July 20th, Bob also did a patrol on Lake Huron/Lake Michigan. He was on patrol August 3rd out of St. Ignace and had his first SAR. Bob was involved in the Labor Day Bridge Walk patrols and September 13th did a patrol on St Marys River. Dustin Denkins also travel four times this summer as did Bob Madden. As far as I can tell from reports I sent to Dennis Duford, Bob Madden hours Marine Patrols, SAR hours and Public Affairs hours. Bob Williams- 17 hours RBS, SAR- 3 hours, Public Affairs hours, Vessel Safety Checks- 4 hours, Marine Patrols hours. Paul Johnson- Marine Patrols hours, RBS- 232 hours, SAR- 3.5 hours, VSC- 22 hours. James Foote- Marine Patrol hours, RBS hours, SAR-5.5 hours, Public Affairs hours, James also has a facility that was used on these patrols. Dustin Denkins- RBS- 4 hours, Marine Patrols hours, All five crewmen made up their hours in reyers for 2012 and are current for Many thanks for all the people that helped Manistique Flotilla, hopefully many friendships were forged and our members know where to go for any issues and are ready to take the Manistique Flotilla to another level. Al Grimm FC ************************************************************************* FLOTILLA REPORT CEDARVILLE/HESSEL We are at the closing of another season on the water and it has been an unusual season to say the least. Many of us have had furnaces on occasionally June, August and September, interspersed with enough rain to temporarily bring some of the water levels up. Never the less we have continued with on the water training for newer members, and have been in attendance at the Blessing of the Boats in Cedarville and also the Hessel Antique Wooden Boat Show. Both events had good turnouts in attendance. Flotilla also sent one of our facilities with two coxswains to the Boat School held in St. Ignace to requalify and assisted three members from other areas to work on their qualifications as well. This facility also helped over at the Straits during the Annual Mackinac Bridge Walk in weather conditions that challenged some of those engaged in that patrol to the point where some of those patrolling had to quit the patrol early. 6 ************************************************************************* FLOTILLA REPORT ST. IGNACE Flotilla Report We have had a busy year. The Boat School at St. Ignace was a great success. I recommend that Division continue one in the Upper Pennisula. Members of our Flotilla worked hard to get a Coxswain for Manistique so they can be self running. We helped the Station whenever they needed a boat to fill in. We tried to get new members but few below our goal. Our examiners worked hard and completed as many exams as possible. Our membership is at a minimum. We need to grow to stay a healthy Flotilla. We are looking forward to improving next year. To that end I plan to go on a speaking tour to the area s service clubs this winter. Unfortunately, I was assigned to far from the bridge to get pictures this year. Richard Borth FLOTILLA REPORT TWIN BAY (TRAVERSE CITY) New Members 2 Held a SAREX on 9-14 and Egress and Swim Quals on Aux Air Missions in the last 90 days The flotilla enjoys strong participation. We have many active air Ops members and we are actively trying to increase our surface side presence. We are currently training two surface crew members and one coxswain. We have a possible second surface facility and are recruiting power squadron members. 15 Boat inspections Fall class Boater Safety Education classes are as follows -About Boating Safety Navigational Charting -Global Positioning Systems (GPS) - -Mariner Knots, Boat Radio and Weather Class - I have assumed the duties of 9 CR DFSO (District Flight Safety Officer) as of this summer and at the national level as BC-RAA, Branch Chief - Air Flight Surgeon on19 September. Jeff Kyff FC ******************************************************************************************************************************** Flotilla Grand Marais This was a good summer for Flotilla During the course of the summer the Flotilla added one new coxswain and three new crew members. We did a total of 12 patrols and logged twenty-seven and a half hours on the water. We participated in one SAR, working with the National Park and Marquette Coast Guard. We had one member retire this year. We also had one member become VE qualified. Once again we had a member from a Flotilla in Florida that helped us out with a lot of our patrols. Thanks go out to Leo and Kathy Fix who came up to Grand Marais and helped us out with our training and qualified one of our members as crew. Kathy also gave us a new direction to go with our navigation training. We are still trying to recruit new members to become operational for us and are trying to get at least one more boat that is a facility. Karla Bowen FC 26-12
