1 2011 National Safe Boating Week Division 12 Highlights As Reported by Flotillas NSBW Division 12 highlights compiled and presented by Barbara Burchfield.
2 U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary flotillas stepped up to deliver the recreational boating safety message to South Carolina boaters during National Safe Boating Week. These are highlights of activities and events during the May week, as reported by the flotillas. Proclamations Declaring 21-27May as National Safe Boating Week Promoting public awareness for boating safety is accomplished on many fronts, such as NSBW Proclamations by local city officials. Whereas, on average, 700 people die each year in boating-related accidents in the U.S.; approximately 70% of these are fatalities caused by drowning; and Whereas, the vast majority of these accidents are caused by human error or poor judgment and not by the boat, equipment, or environmental factors; and Whereas, a significant number of boaters who lose their lives by drowning each year would be alive today had they worn their life jackets; and Whereas, today s life jackets are more comfortable, more attractive, and more wearable than styles of years past and deserve a fresh look by today s boating public. Therefore, I,, do hereby support the goals of the North American Safe Boating Campaign and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and proclaim May 21-27, 2011, as National Safe Boating Week and the start of the year-round effort to promote safe boating. In Witness Thereof, I urge all those who boat to Wear it. and practice safe boating habits. Given under my signature and the seal of at the city of this day of, Sumter Mayor Joe McElveen signs the proclamation declaring next week as National Safe Boat Week, leading up to Memorial Day weekend, as Sep Harvin, left and Perry Moses III, looks on. 6 RBS-PV & VSC Promotes Boating Safety Messages Recreational Boating Safety Program Visitors (RBS-PV) create and maintain good working relationships with RBS Program Partners; marine dealers, agencies, organizations and companies that have a presence or interest in recreational boating. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary seeks to provide current boater information, resources and publications to the boating public through the RBS Program Partners. Program Visitors are also present at boat landings during VSC events and at public affairs activities during NSBW, getting the message out wherever and whenever they can!
