1 Port Huron Sail and Power Squadron September 2018 July and August are gone in the blink of an eye! Here is a recap of all of the Squadron s activities: Two of our Past Commanders received National Recognition at our first summer picnic on June 28 th. P/C Marv Krainbrink received a plaque for his 50th merit mark, a diamond studded USPS lapel pin and Governing Board Emeritus Membership. P/C Lon Skoglund received a plaque for his 25th merit mark, a USPS ruby studded lapel pin and his life membership card. I counted 39 members in attendance, including sixteen Past Commanders! The Executive Committee approved a mass mailing to boat owners in Saint Clair County publicizing the Squadron. Two Saturdays were selected in July to conduct vessel safety checks at Desmond Marine. Over 5600 invitations were mailed. Thanks to those stuffers/stampers/sealers who worked several evenings to prepare the mailing. A total of 26 boat owners took advantage of these additional VSCs. Bob Fitzgerald of Port Huron was the lucky winner of the drawing for the VHS hand held radio. The Squadron had a float in the Blue Water Festival International Rotary Parade on July 11 th. Larry Babin provided his pontoon boat again this year. Thanks to all who participated. The Sea Scouts and Cdr. Jay represented the Squadron at the PHYC Family Night on July 12 th. They tattooed young and old at the event. The tattoos promoted the use of PFDs. XO Jeannie Hall and the Carlisle s chaired the Dry Ice sale for the Mackinac racers on Friday July 13 th and Saturday July 14 th. We had a sell out this year. Thanks to all of the ice sellers. Mary Twiss and the Sherman s hosted our traditional Mac Party on Boat Night on Friday July 13 th at the Squadron. About 24 members attended. Thanks to those who served on the party committee. About 20 members attended on a warm and humid evening. The Executive Committee met on Tuesday August 14 th. We approved replacement of our leaking water heater. The second refrigerator, which now freezes its contents, was also approved for replacement. Thanks to P/C Leonard LaPorte and his VE team who completed another successful year of Vessel Safety Checks. They even added two additional Saturdays in July to support our mass mailing project. Trailered boats were lined up at Desmond Marine in Port Huron on two Saturdays in July to receive their free safety checks. 4 v Education Department Page 4 Lt/C Robert Christoff, AP Wow time for the September Splash I can t believe that summer is coming to a close and the yellow buses are rolling by the window as I type. ABC basic boating starts on Oct 4 and we will soon start contacting the non-members that expressed interest at the VSC inspections that we conducted this summer. If anyone that you know is interested or has a neighbor or just like being around water let them know that we are looking for students. Also at this time we are looking for students for the Marine Electronics and the Seamanship course we are proposing to conduct. Please contact me at ( ) and I will add your name to the list. At this time I have one person interested in the Marine Electronics course. This summer was my first as a retiree and it allowed me time to go to Port Sanilac, Port Austin and East Tawas. It certainly makes a difference boating after the classes that I have taken. But that being the case, if you have a dingy, Kayak or a motor yacht being educated in your investment and the rules of the road makes more enjoyable and safer for you and me. 5 Safety Report Page 5 Boating in Heavy Weather - Part I from BoatSafe.com Preparation For Heavy Weather This week's tip is all about preparing yourself for heavy weather. If you have kept a proper lookout, developed a "weather eye" and monitored the weather on your VHF radio, you should have plenty of time to get prepared. Obviously, the best way to handle rough weather is to get to shore immediately and avoid it completely. However, this may not be practical if you are on an extended cruise. In this case, you should prepare yourself, the vessel and your crew for what is to come. As boats vary in design and size, and weather conditions vary in severity, so does the laundry list of precautionary items that need to be performed. The following list was accumulated from various resources and from input from those who answered last week's question concerning "what to do if heavy weather is approaching." Thanks to those who contributed. For novice boaters we have defined some of the, perhaps, unfamiliar terms such as jack line, sea anchor and drogue below. What Every Skipper Should Know Meet with the crew to explain the situation and reassure them. Make sure that they know what to do, and what not to do, when the extreme weather arrives. Explain such things as keeping low in the boat, not moving around excessively and not going out on deck unless necessary. Give them all an assignment to keep them occupied and keep their minds off the situation. Determine position of storm, wind direction, speed and estimate time to your location. Secure all hatches; close all ports and windows. (Keep the water on the outside.) Pump bilges dry and repeat as required. This helps eliminate "free water affect." (Sloshing of water in the bilge as the boat rolls which can effect stability.) Secure all loose gear above decks and below. Put away small items and lash down larger ones. Anything you want to have when the storm passes must be secured. Break out PFD's and foul weather gear and exercise your authority as skipper by requiring them to be worn by everyone on board. Do this before the weather gets bad, don't wait too long. Ready emergency equipment that you may need such as hand pumps, bailers, first aide kit, sound signaling device, etc. Get a good fix of your position and plot it on your chart. Make note of the time, your heading and speed. Make plans to alter course to sheltered waters if possible. Continue to monitor channel 16 on your VHF radio for updates to severe forecasts. For extremely severe weather, break out your abandon ship procedures and review them. Make sure the life raft is ready to be deployed. Make sure emergency food and water are in the life raft. Rig jack lines (see below for definitions) and/or life lines and require anyone who must go on deck to wear a safety harness. Make ready your sea anchor or drogue if needed. Turn on navigation lights. Change to a full fuel tank if possible. Keep a sharp lookout for floating debris and other boats. If you have a choice, do not operate the boat from the flybridge.
