2 P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Dear Friends, I hope everyone is having a great and prosperous start to the new year. This winter, we have had plenty of refreshing rain. And now we are enjoying some sunny warm days, nice enough to be out on the water or in the garden. Spring is just around the corner. Our energetic Vice Commodore Teri Reese and Rear Commodore Jess Rehn have been working diligently on the 2017 club calendar and will have most dates and events in place to share and discuss at the Kick-off meeting and no-host luncheon at Dominic s on February 4 th. We hope to see you all there for another fun club get-together. We have an opportunity to support the Navy and Marine Relief Society with the purchase of raffle tickets from Silver Gate Yacht Club. The drawing will be held on April 1 st, you need not be present to win a 7-day cruise for two, Caribbean or Mediterranean, aboard the Star Clipper tall ship. More information within this newsletter and on the sgyc.org website. Click on the Schooner Cup tab on the left side. It was wonderful to see everyone at our annual Chinese New Year celebration at Chan s. Many thanks to Edelgard Rieder and Sue Ayres for organizing the event. Richard Rieder greeted the guests and looked so dapper in his handsome Asian jacket. Edelgard and Linda wore their beautifully crafted Asian jackets as well. They really set the mood. It is always so much fun to gather as a group to share stories and laugh while enjoying a good meal. Linda Loftis won one of the raffle drawings. Kahualani Rehn was a double winner, with the other raffle drawing and completing the Chinese New Year puzzle. Check the SMYC calendar on our website for upcoming events. See you all on the docks and join us on the sunny clubhouse patio. Yokwe and Stay Safe. 3 P A G E 3 ON THE WATER Cruise to Dana Point on March 18th, 2017 Santa Margarita Yacht Club's first cruise of the year is right around the corner! We will depart Del Mar Marina, MCB Camp Pendleton, CA, on the18th of March, 2017, for a one night trip to Dana Point, then cruise back to the Del Mar Marina the morning of the 19th with a planned arrival of no later than 4.30p.m. Jess Rehn will be the point of contact for this cruise: (cell) or bike.doc11@gmail.com We would like to see more of our members out on the water and sailing with us. Please let Jess know as soon as possible if you are a skipper with room aboard for a SMYC member guest crew, or if you are a SMYC member looking to be guest crew. Our boats will overnight at the guest slips managed by the Dana Point Marina Company (DPMC). Each skipper needs to arrange for their own guest slip by calling the DPMC at When calling DPMC ask for Sue and be prepared to provide proof of registration and insurance. A copy of current registration/documentation and proof of liability insurance with a minimum $300,000 "Combined Single Limit Liability" is required for all guests. Please ask if slips are available at the West Basin Guest Dock. Finally, skippers are requested to fly their burgees, and all attendees are asked to bring and wear their SMYC name tags at the DPYC dinner that evening. The deadline to register for this event is March 16th so that Jess can distribute a roster of boats on March 17th. There will be a skipper's meeting at the SMYC clubhouse at8:00 a.m. on March 9th. All skippers planning to participate in this cruise are requested to send Jess the following information and contact him with questions: Skipper and crew names, cellphone numbers, addresses and boat s name and length. Our club has four cruises scheduled for this year. I am looking for members who are interested in being a Cruise Organizer. If you would be willing to organize either the May 27th-29th San Diego Cruise or the July 22nd Sunset Cruise, please contact me. I would like to thank our Vice Commodore Teri Reese for volunteering to be the Cruise Organizer for the Nov 10th-12th Fall Cruise to the Newport Beach Marina. Jess Rehn, Rear Commodore
4 P A G E 4 Safety and Education Preparation For Heavy Weather This article is all about preparing yourself for heavy weather. If you have kept a proper lookout, developed a "weather eye" and monitored the weather on your VHF radio, you should have plenty of time to get prepared. Obviously, the best way to handle rough weather is to get to shore immediately and avoid it completely. However, this may not be practical if you are on an extended cruise. In this case, you should prepare yourself, the vessel and your crew for what is to come. As boats vary in design and size, and weather conditions vary in severity, so does the laundry list of precautionary items that need to be performed. The following list was accumulated from various resources. For novice boaters we have defined some of the, perhaps, unfamiliar terms such as jack line, sea anchor and drogue below. What Every Skipper Should Know Meet with the crew to explain the situation and reassure them. Make sure that they know what to, and what not to do, when the extreme weather arrives. Explain such things as keeping low in the boat, not moving around excessively and not going out on deck unless necessary. Give them all an assignment to keep them occupied and keep their minds off the situation. Determine position of storm, wind direction, speed and estimate time to your location. Secure all hatches; close all ports and windows. (Keep the water on the outside.) Pump bilges dry and repeat as required. This helps eliminate "free water affect." (Sloshing of water in the bilge as the boat rolls which can effect stability.) Secure all loose gear above decks and below. Put away small items and lash down larger ones. Anything you want to have when the storm passes must be secured. Break out PFD's and foul weather gear and exercise your authority as skipper by requiring them to be worn by everyone on board. Do this before the weather gets bad, don't wait too long. Ready emergency equipment that you may need such as hand pumps, bailers, first aide kit, sound signaling device, etc. Get a good fix of your position and plot it on your chart. Make note of the time, your heading and speed. Make plans to alter course to sheltered waters if possible. Continue to monitor channel 16 on your VHF radio for updates to severe forecasts. For extremely severe weather, break out your abandon ship procedures and review them. Make sure the life raft is ready to be deployed.
5 P A G E 5 Continued from page 4 Make sure emergency food and water are in the life raft. Rig jack lines (see below for definitions) and/or life lines and require anyone who must go on deck to wear a safety harness. Make ready your sea anchor or drogue if needed. Turn on navigation lights. Keep away from metal objects. Change to a full fuel tank if possible. Keep a sharp lookout for floating debris and other boats. If you have a choice, do not operate the boat from the fly bridge. Prevent getting caught in heavy weather by developing a "weather eye," listening to your radio, and heading for shore before it becomes an emergency. Jack Lines - lines rigged along the outboard decks running from the bow aft. This allows you to attach the tether from your safety harness and move forward and back at will. Life Lines - usually vinyl or plastic covered wire rope at the sides of the boat's deck to keep the crew from falling overboard. Safety Harness - a nylon web harness worn in rough seas or heavy weather. It has a tether with a clip. The clip is attached to the jack lines or lifelines so that if you are washed overboard in a storm you are still attached to the boat. Sea Anchor - A floating canvas cone, held open by wire rings, with an opening in the smaller end, and a rope bridle at the larger end attached to a line leading to the bow of the boat. It is used in storm conditions to (a) keep the bow of the boat into the wind, and (b) slow the downwind drift of the boat. Drogue - Any device steamed astern to check a boat's speed and/or to help keep the stern perpendicular to the waves in a following sea.

7 P A G E 7 Chinese New Year s Celebration Chan s Restaurant in San Marcos It has become a SMYC tradition to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a CNO at a Chinese restaurant. Chan s, formerly Chin s, continues to be a very popular choice. The atmosphere was very pleasant, table settings with crisp pink tablecloths very pretty, and the staff very attentive. This year 19 club members gathered for a delightful evening of great food and fellowship. Most participants included the traditional Chinese colors red or gold in their attire. A selection of seven tasty menu items was enjoyed by all. Several people were happy to pack up the leftovers and take them home. A small gift was presented to the winner of a Chinese word game. And two prizes were awarded in a no-cost raffle - a gift basket and a hummingbird photo on canvas. R E M I N D E R It s that time of year again. The SMYC Membership Fee was due by December 31, All members please go to our website: SMYC.org > Membership Information tab > Member Renewal and print the Renewal and Liability Release form (2 pages), and complete the form. To avoid delays and confusion, please mail the form and your check to: Membership Chair, Susan Rodriguez, 1055 Seahorse Court, Carlsbad CA Our goal is to include all members with their correct contact information in the 2017 Directory which will go to print mid-february Those who have not paid will not appear in the directory. Cards will be mailed out beginning in January as payments and forms are received. Vice Commodore, Membership & Directory Susan Rodriguez
