October events included Small Boat Race #7 #8 the Gator Cup at Navy Yacht Club San Diego. Speaking of the Gator Cup, members Joe Palmiotti Jay Rodriguez joined me as crew.

After the Gator Cup, we drove onto the Coronado base to watch the Extreme Racing on the bay between North Isl Harbor Isl. All I can say is Wow, those cats can fly! The SMYC elections were successful.

As I write this article, the weather has been hot 90 degrees plus - will continue to be hot for the next several days; typical Fall weather? October events included Small Boat Race #7 #8 the Gator Cup at Navy Yacht Club San Diego. Speaking of the Gator Cup, members Joe Palmiotti Jay Rodriguez joined me as crew. It was a beautiful windy day on the bay with lots of other racing activities in the area. We tried our best to prevail, but Navy YC-SD will keep their trophy another year. After the Gator Cup, we drove onto the Coronado base to watch the Extreme Racing on the bay between North Isl Harbor Isl. All I can say is Wow, those cats can fly! The SMYC elections were successful. Congratulations to the newly elected 2018 Flag Officers Directors. If you are interested in holding a chairperson position either in the Sting Committees or Ad Hoc Committees, please let the 2017 or 2018 board members know what your interest is. Those positions will be discussed filled at the planning meeting in December/January. We always need volunteers to ensure an on-going smooth transition from one year to the next. All of the events behind the scenes support positions will have to be in place to keep the club alive functioning. Coming up in November December: OORAH Regatta, please come out to support our club Saturday, November 4 th. We need to take back our trophy from Navy YC-SD! Cruise to Dana Point Newport Beach November 9 th /10 th, returning November 12 th /13 th. Del Mar Marina Frostbite Regatta Saturday, December 2 nd. 3 P A G E 3 From the Vice Commodore: Happy fall to everyone! I love this time of year especially when the weather starts to cool off a bit which, of course, as I write this, it has not! What an enjoyable year it has been to serve the club become more acquainted with many of you through our various events. Thanks to all that took the time to vote in our recent election. For those who were able to attend the meeting Oktoberfest celebration, the meeting was informative, the dinner a great meal, the party a good time for all our members guests. Of course, all this activity happens through the generous time talent contributions of our volunteers to whom I am very grateful. I look forward to 2018 the opportunity to continue to serve our club as your Commodore. Thank you for your votes of confidence as I have moved up-the-chairs. It is my sincere intention to carry on the honorable legacy of our club that has been forged by the members in leadership who have gone before me. Many thanks to those who stepped up to lead the club in 2018 with congratulations to the elected Bridge Board who are Susan Rodriguez as the Junior Staff Commodore, Jim Weaver as Vice Commodore, Sherry Lamont as Secretary, Jim Murtl as Treasurer, Pat Ayres, Sue Ayres, Gary Hall, Edelgard Rieder Kat Wacker as the Board. Also invaluable are the participating Staff Commodores who provide insight, guidance, wisdom based upon their many years of experience in running this ( other clubs) along with their involvement at large in the yachting community. See you around the marina, Teri In Memoriam Michael James Williams ~ 1956 to 2017 Mike Williams, former SMYC Vice Commodore, passed away on October 15, 2017 at his home in Oceanside after a courageous difficult battle with cancer. He was 61 years old. Mike will be remembered at an Episcopal service led by Reverend Doran Stambaugh on November 15, 2017 at 11:00 am. The church is located at 2775 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, CA There will be a reception held afterward at The Green Tavern in Carlsbad. Mike had a passionate love for being on the water. He served this country in the U. S. Navy, retiring as a Chief Boatswain s Mate. In retirement he spent as much time as he could sailing. He served our club as a social director, cruising coordinator, rear vice commodore. Mike loved a great meal in company of friends. He formed chaired the Outer Reef Social Club where he fostered friendships created many memorable dinner events. He was a loyal friend to many. Mike had his own style that was unique at times disruptively bold. For better or worse, at least you knew where he stood on an issue. In spirited conversation we did not always agree. But I am proud to call him a friend, a fellow Navy Chief, I will miss his infectious enthusiasm for being upon any body of water in a floating vessel. Mike suffered tremendous physical pain in the past year with his illness. In conversation this past month Mike shared that he had so much more he wanted to do. He added, if it was not meant to be, he was grateful for the life he had lived. It had been an extraordinary experience to proudly serve in the Navy while leading sailors sailing the world s oceans seas. He enjoyed his post retirement sailing adventures cherished the many friends he had made in the sailing community. Mike, you carried your pain with optimism dignity; may you now rest in peace. 4 P A G E 4 Safety Education Heavy Weather Boat Hling - Part 2 Boat Hling Under Adverse Conditions Some of the most challenging conditions you may encounter as a skipper are the adverse conditions of "Heavy Weather." The size of your boat does not have much to do with its seaworthiness. How it will hle adverse conditions is more or less built in during the design construction. You should never use your boat for anything other than for what it was designed its intended use. Don't venture into waters or weather conditions which are beyond your boat's design capabilities. What may seem heavy weather to an inexperienced boater may not bother a seasoned weatherwise skipper at all. The body of water on which you operate has a lot to do with how severe the conditions may get. While operating on deep large bodies of water, wave action tends to build more slowly than on large waters that are more shallow. In deep waters, wind action may only cause moderate seas with slow, rolling swells, while in shallower waters that same wind force may make steep, breaking seas. Know Your Boat Hling your boat in heavy weather is as individual as the skipper himself. No two boats react exactly the same in the same sea conditions. Each hull design reacts differently to the sea variables-- even two boats with the same design may act differently depending on their load trim. Every skipper must learn the idiosyncrasies of his own boat know how it will react as conditions change. Meeting Head Seas In moderate seas you should be able to slow your speed in order to ride up over the waves rather than driving the bow into them. You also don't want to get to the top the wave fall off the back side burying the bow. If conditions get worse, slow down until you are making bare steerage way hold your boat at an angle of 45 to the swells. The more you reduce speed, the less strain will be put on the hull superstructure. Continued pounding can pop out or break ports windows. You really don't want to see how much water can come in a 12" porthole. Running in the Trough If your course dictates that you are running in the direction of the trough of waves (parallel to them) you must take extra caution. As your boat bounces up down from trough to trough it may roll excessively possibly dangerously. In these conditions in a powerboat, it is best to change course make a series of tacks, taking the wind waves at a 45 angle, first broad on your bow then broad on your quarter. This zig-zag course should leave your boat in the trough for only long enough to turn. You want to minimize the time that you are in the trough broad side to the swell to prevent broaching. Running Before the Sea When the swells are coming from directly behind you, running before them can be difficult. Your boat's stern can be swept up pushed to one side or another. You want to make sure that you keep the stern perpendicular to the oncoming seas. Another concern is when lifted up by heavy seas the boat tends to rush down the slope from the crest to the trough. Occasionally with the stern high, the propeller can come out of the water race. The rudder also may lose contact with the water flow be left useless. Again, the boat may yaw to one side broach into the trough. (continued on next page)

In a power boat, forget your intended destination bring the bow around into the wind waves using just enough power to make bare steerage way while conserving fuel. If fuel becomes a concern you might consider deploying a sea anchor to fall back on to help keep the bow into wind wave action with no power necessary. It also slows any drift that you may be making if a leeshore is a concern. Caution As pointed out last week, your best bet is to avoid severe weather, but if you can't you should be prepared. This is a subject that should be approached with as many sources of reference as possible. The information provided here should not be relied on solely is meant to only give an overview of the topic. You should read books about heavy weather boat hling, attend USPS or USCG Auxiliary classes for heavy weather hling techniques, you should view videos on the subject, you should practice the maneuvers in light to moderate seas. Hinman Trophy Featured a who s who of college sailing s present past jet lag, a team composed of Stanford University alumni sailors, hall the right combinations this week, especially on Sunday, as the Northern California based team captured their first Hinman Trophy. 7 PAGE 7 Sunday, October 15, was Small Boat Race 8 of 8. Although the competition was small, it was fierce, with winds coming from the North. Our two boats were neck neck, tied on the fourth race, before Susan Teri pulled ahead took first place in the last race. With sustained winds, all of our racers enjoyed good sailing conditions were having a wonderful time scudding up down the channel. They were surprised when the last race was called, thereby officially ending the SMYC Summer Small Boat Series of SMYC Oktoberfest 2017
