A large crowd of happy participants enjoyed a great variety of delicious food and drink along with the usual camaraderie. The ice cream fundraiser topped the choices of tasty desserts. At the conclusion of the festivities a spectacular fireworks display was watched by many from the shore and others relaxing on their boats. A WONDERFUL DAY!

2 P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Dear members and friends, Kudos to all SMYC: The 4th of July BBQ was a great success with more people attending than ever before. A special THANK YOU goes out to all the members and friends who helped setup, grill (Erik Loftis and Chad French) and cleanup. Thank you also to everybody that brought delicious food and kept the tables full. Last but not least, I want to thank the Wiedemann Family for the Sundae Booth, making $ for Hospice. The small boat races are in full swing. And Joe Palmiotti is looking forward to the next race on August 6. We invite everyone to come sail or just watch, helpers are always welcome. Look at the SMYC webpage for more information regarding the Ladies Day Races in September. Cruising is on hold until November. Check with Teri Reese if you are interested in a Veteran s Weekend Adventure. We will have our annual General Membership Meeting on August 20. The Club will be providing the meat. Members are requested to bring a dish to share. We are taking nominations for officers and committee offices for next year, as well as nominations for Award recipients for Racer, Cruiser or Yachtsperson of the year. Please contact Kat Wacker if you would like to nominate somebody. Again, my deepest appreciation to all those who volunteer in any aspect of our club. Commodore Linda Loftis Staff Commodore Luncheon The annual Staff Commodore Luncheon was held this past month at the Spaghetti Factory in San Marcos. We had over 20 members present. A big Thank You to SMYC Chapter IOBG President Jim Murtland for arranging the event. Gifts and thoughtful prizes were passed out by Liz Murtland, our endearing hostess. It was fun to see all the old and soon to be commodores in the room chatting and enjoying each other s company. Commodore Linda Loftis

3 P A G E 3 Safety and Education Life Jackets 101 by Susan Granato, ABA Boating Safety and Environmental Liaison In the fall of 2000, the US Coast Guard (USCG) reported 678 recreational boating deaths. Of these victims, 70% died by drowning and 90% (467!) of these recreational boaters were not wearing a life jacket. Therefore, the best decision you can make is to ensure that everyone on board your boat has a life jacket and that these jackets are worn at all times. By regulation, all recreational boats must carry one wearable life jacket for each person aboard. In fact, the slogan for the 2001 North American Safe Boating Campaign is "Boat Smart From The Start. Wear Your Life Jacket", because this simple step could do the most to reduce boating fatalities. Each year you should inspect your life jackets to ensure that they meet current USCG standards, that they fit growing children (and adults), and that they are in good condition. Purchasing a new life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) can be confusing because there are several flotation types, USCG classifications, and manufacturers. There are three types of flotation products: foam, inflatable and hybrid PFDs. Foam PFDs are considered the most reliable, are designed for swimmers and non-swimmers and USCG approved foam life jackets are available in adult, youth, child, and infant sizes. Inflatable PFDs are the most compact, are intended only for swimmers, and are only available in adult sizes. Inflatable life jackets use a cylinder of compressed carbon dioxide (CO2) gas to inflate a coated chamber. By pulling on a cord, the wearer causes the inflation system to drive a pin through the seal of the gas cylinder. The escaping CO2 is channeled into the chamber, which fills and expands out of its packed state. Hybrid PFDs are a combination of foam and inflation. The hybrids are considered reliable by the USCG, are designed for both swimmers and non-swimmers, and are commonly available in adult, youth, and child sizes. The USCG has five types of approved PFDs, each of which may include foam, inflatable and hybrid flotation materials: TYPE I PFD or Off-Shore Life Jacket provides the most buoyancy. It is effective for all waters, especially open, rough or remote waters where rescue may be delayed. It is designed to turn most unconscious wearers in the water to a face-up position. TYPE II PFD or Near-Shore Buoyancy Vest is intended for calm, inland water or where there is a good chance of quick rescue. Inherent buoyant PFDs of this type will turn some unconscious wearers to a faceup position in the water, but the turning is not as pronounced as a Type I. TYPE III PFD or Flotation Aid is good for conscious users in calm, inland water, or where there is a good chance of quick rescue. It is designed so wearers can place themselves in a face-up position in the water. The wearer may have to tilt their head back to avoid turning facedown in the water. The Type III foam vest has the same minimum buoyancy as a Type II PFD. It comes in many styles, colors, and sizes and is generally the most comfortable type for continuous wear. TYPE IV PFD or Throwable Device is intended for calm, inland water with heavy boat traffic, where help is always present. It is designed to be thrown to a person in the water and grasped and held by the user until rescued; it is not designed to be worn. Type IV devices include buoyant cushions, ring buoys, and horseshoe buoys. This type of flotation device should be used in adjunct with a wearable life jacket. TYPE V PFD or Special Use Device is intended for specific activities and should only be used according to the approval conditions on its label. Once an appropriate floatation device is selected each user should test it in shallow water or a guarded swimming pool. Testing the PFD will ensure the proper fit (especially for children who may drown in an improperly sized or adjusted PFD). Remember, you are responsible for the safety of your passengers and for complying with the life vest regulation. As part of your pre-launch checklist, always check the number and condition of your life jackets.

4 General Membership Meeting August 20th at 4.00pm P A G E 4 During this annual meeting our members have the opportunity to nominate volunteers for Bridge, Board and Committee positions of SMYC for the coming year. You will be given a report about current happenings at the club. And you are welcome to make suggestions or ask questions. Following the meeting we will share a meal. The club will provide Ham and Potatoes. Members are asked to bring a complementary dish to share. Please join us for this important meeting. Invitation to our annual Ladies Day Celebration Please join us at 11am for the Ladies Races and some fun on the water, followed at 3pm by a Wine and Cheese Event. Bring your favorite bottle of wine and a creative choice of delicious cheese. The club will provide bread and crackers and some fruit.

5 August 14th at the Lawrence Welk Theater P A G E 5 Get ready for another delightful and delicious Sunday Brunch and Play at the Lawrence Welk Theater. The play is the hilarious farcical dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. written by Joseph Kesselaing in 1939 and premiered on Jan. 10, 1941 at the Helen Hayes Theater. It moved to the Hudson Theater in Sept. l943 and closed in June 1944 having played 1,444 performances. The plot revolves around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower, but now is composed of insane homicidal maniacs. In 1944 it was made into a movie starring Cary Grant, Boris Karloff and others. The brunch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. The play starts at 1:00 p.m. Total price for Brunch and Play is $60. You may opt for just the Play for $35.00 or just the Brunch for $ RSVP date has passed. If you still are interested in participating, please contact Donna Burnley at or Catballue7729@sbcglobal.net. RBOC ACHIEVEMENTS AND INVOLVEMENT Since 1968, RBOC has lobbied on behalf of California boaters as laws and regulations have targeted boating and any matter that would increase boating cost. They provide courses and advice on regional issues important to local boaters. RBOC continues to oppose proposals that would restrict recreational boating and fishing on California s coast, the Delta, it s lakes and waterways and to mitigate legislative and environmental restrictions. They continue its efforts to ensure boaters fuel tax dollars and registration fees are dedicated to boating safety and education programs, infrastructure financing programs, law enforcement financing programs, and maintaining the intrinsic value of the Division of Boating and Waterways Commission. RBOC continues its involvement against attempts to increase fees and taxes on boating and boaters by insuring increases are justified and necessary. RBOC proposed legislation in a taskforce to clear waterways of abandoned vessels and continues its efforts to provide incentives for the Boat Turn in programs. There are many more reasons why we have RBOC and ask from time to time for some donations for these dedicated people do this on a volunteer basis for the love of boats and boating in California waters. Please go to their website and see what a great job they are doing. Till next time, SC Gary Hall

6 P A G E 6 Follow the U.S. OLYMPIC SAILING TEAM on YOUTUBE CHANNEL August 5th to the 21st Fifteen athletes will represent the United States of America in ten Olympic Classes. Both, men and women, will race in these events. We will have a Paralympic Team as well. There are many great activities that US SAILING contributes to our sport of Sailing. Please check their website, learn all about them and maybe join them: Till next time, SC Gary Hall IOBGA District 15 When we had the change of watch in October 2015 our Board held a jewelry fundraiser for ELDER HELP SAN DIEGO. With the help of IOBG and IOBGA we raised over $800. Our 2016 Board members are President Audrey Hall, Vice President Grace Hansen, Treasurer Dawn Nemoy and Secretary Marybeth Thayer. In January, along with the IOBG, we had our annual Seminar for the spouses of Yacht Club Officers and Board Members. This seminar was well received due to all the information put together by our board members. On March 23 we held a jewelry fundraiser along the Ladies Luncheon at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. With a lot of enthusiasm we raised over $500 for ELDER HELP. We had another Jewelry Event on July 9, held again at the Mission Bay Yacht Club. This was an evening event with music and great food. We were able to raise more than $500 for ELDER HELP. My personal goal this year is to raise over $2000. With the help of a great Board we are almost there. We have one more event in October and hope to surpass our goal. All the jewelry was donated by our district ladies and gentlemen. This makes it even more special to us. The IOBG District Director Kathy Smith along with the IOBGA First Vice President Gary Smith started a Facebook Page. Many of our events with pictures are available for everyone to view. District 15 is enjoying all the camaraderie that goes along with the organization. We will have more news in the next issue. Fair winds, IOBGA District 15 President Audrey Hall

The sky was clear blue and the Del Mar basin was filled with water activities. We had paddle boards, sail boats, tugs and the United States Navy sharing the basin. All of the traffic in the basin did not distract our racers who were willing to accommodate the extra activities while enjoying their racing. Four boats participated in our race date as we passed into our second half of the race calendar. The race committee had to rush setting the marks to get our race start off at 12:00pm. So we had to compress the Skippers meeting to 20 seconds. That was a bad call because confusion lingered on the exact location of the temporary E mark. In the end E mark issue was put to bed by redoing that race. Here are the results of our spectacular race day. I hope to see you on our 6th race date August 6. Thanks Bill and Marybeth for RC duties. RC. Joe Palmiotti 1. Gary / Donna 6 2. Susan / Tony Patrick / Kevin Bob/Sherry 16 Attention all Racers: The Race Committee would very much appreciate if racers would give advance notice of their intention to participate in any particular race to help make preparations for the races go more smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation! Joe Palmiotti
