The games were loads of fun and these were created and supervised by Jill Powell, AP along with two handsome sons, James and David Powell. There was a lifejacket drill created by Van Diehl, SN where 6 individuals were placed in a makeshift cockpit but only 4 lifejackets were available. There was a race to see who could don their lifejackets the quickest. Dave Duet, P (member of both groups) was the overall winner so his life was saved. June Duet was very assertive and managed to wrestle a lifejacket from Rob Anderson of Phoenix Sail & Power Squadron. SMYC/SLRSPS Annual BBQ & Raft-up On Saturday July 10, the first joint San Luis Rey Sail & Power Squadron/Santa Margarita Yacht Club BBQ and Raft-up was held at SMYC and was a real success. A burgee exchange was conducted and Staff Commodore Sue Nelson accepted the SLRSPS burgee on behalf of SMYC, and Vice Commodore Loie Powell accepted the Santa Margarita Yacht Club burgee on behalf of the squadron. Good interaction with both membership groups and many laughs were shared. The BBQ was wonderful, tended by David Copenhaver, P and assisted by Justin McChesney. There were steaks, chicken and bratwurst choices. Honorable mentions and gratification go to Barry Bean, AP, Emi and Jan Follestad and Edelgard Rieder for shucking corn and peeling juicy onions. Photo Credit: VC Loie Powell The BBQ was a hit with members of SMYC and SLRSPS. Again, the laughs and entertainment value of this day were wonderful! 65 members attended from both SMYC and SLRSPS and the good times rolled. I sincerely hope that we can make this an annual event. VC Loie D. Powell, AP Photo Credit: VC Loie Powell Good food, great scenery, excellent company.
2 P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Just Watch our Wake! We re about to set sail on the second half of the summer season at SMYC and things are jump in on and off the water. But, the sailing has been anything but smooth for SMYC s Clint Summers, in Done Deal, who placed second in the Around the Island Race, braving winds on the back side of Catalina in excess of 40 knots. Congratulations and we hope to have Clint give us a talk about what it was like to be in those conditions, and to win! Stay tuned for time and place. Commodore Liz Murtland And we re setting records on land too! Sixty-five fellow shipmates attended the SMYC/San Luis Rey Sail & Power Squadron Barbeque, on July 10th, hosted by Vice Commodore Loie Powell and Jill. Great food, prizes and games were enjoyed by all. Doris Wiedemann and Nancy Bordier set a new high for attendance at this month s bingo event. Congratulations also to the Wiedemanns, Bordiers and Linda Rayburn - the team, that raised the 2nd largest donation for the North Coast Hospice in SMYC history at their July 4th Ice Cream Social. We also had a record turnout at the Staff Commodore's luncheon, thanks to SC Audrey and Gary Hall. Join us for the Annual Membership Meeting and Club Picnic/ Potluck on August 14 at 4 PM. Please bring a dish to share with others; we ll bring the main course! And, September is going to be even more fun! On Sept. 5th the SMYC Chapter of the International Order of the Blue Gavel the association of former Commodores will host a Beer, Wine & Cheese Tasting Party at the club house. Fellow sailors will be on board that weekend from Silver Gate Yacht Club. Super chef Gary Hall will represent SMYC in the annual Chili Cook-off and we ll christen our new margarita maker too. The SMCY Beach Party will be on-base on Sept. 19th. Lastly, whoever said it s lonely at the top is just plain nuts! I ve never had so much fun! But, it s time to look for some new officers and directors to take the SMYC helm for the season. If you re interested in running please let SC Sue Nelson, Nominations Chairman, know budandsue@roadrunner.com. After 4 spectacular years of dedicated service, SMYC Secretary Sue Ayers and Director Pat Ayers have decided to step down from our Bridge and Board. Thanks for a job very well done; you will be seriously missed. Photo Credit: Marybeth Thayer Staff Commodores Audrey Hall and Jim Murtland at the SMYC Staff Commodore Luncheon.

On Sunday, July 25th, our club had their annual gathering of Staff Commodores. Eighteen of us enjoyed a great Italian luncheon at Tripiano s Restaurant in Oceanside. We also had the privilege of joining Floyce and SC Harvey Royer, toasting their 57th wedding anniversary. Commodore Liz Murtland joined us this year as we let her know that the Staff Commodores of our club continue the camaraderie, which has existed since our beginning, over thirty years ago. Fair Winds, SC Audrey Hall
4 P A G E 4 Ladies Day Bingo July 17, 2010 As the weather was heating up outside, so was the temperature inside the clubhouse. Many members and guests gathered at SMYC for an afternoon of ladies bingo. It was a pleasure having two ladies from OYC and their guests join us. An array of great prizes exchanged hands many times. The "Mystery Prize", a gift card from Elephant Bar in San Marcos, went to Sue Ayres. You will be notified when the next Bingo event is planned. All ladies are invited to attend. Photo Credit: Marybeth Thayer Full house for Ladies Day Bingo, July 17, Nancy Bordier and Doris Wiedemann Record-Setting Fund Raiser Thanks to all who participated in the Ice Cream Sundae fund raiser for The Hospice of the North Coast. Your donations made this the second best in five years. The weather was cool but we had a steady stream of happy ice cream customers all afternoon. Next year, with a "hot" day, we hope to "Rocket" over $500. A special thanks to Nancy and Jim Bordier, Linda Rayburn, and Doris Wiedemann for manning the booth. Director Bill Wiedemann Photo Credit: Marybeth Thayer Members cool off on a hot day for a great cause The Hospice of the North Coast. Run for the SMYC Bridge & Board of Directors. Interested? Let SC Sue Nelson, Nominations Chairman, know by 8/14. (budandsue@roadrunner.com)

6 P A G E 6 Education and Safety Rescue 21, DSC and AIS Did you know that there is a quiet revolution going on in the world of maritime communications? You have all heard of DSC, or Digital Selective Calling, as this newsletter had an article about it this spring. Another development is the Automated Identity System, a transponder based system. These systems are combined and enhanced by the U. S. Coast Guard s newest communications and search and rescue upgrade, called Rescue 21. The Automated Identity System (AIS) is used in navigation primarily for collision avoidance. It is a transponder based system, that is, its AIS unit responds when queried by another AIS unit. Information including position, speed, navigational status, vessel name, and VHF call sign are transmitted. The navigational information originates from the ship's GPS receiver and gyrocompass. Of course, not all vessels are equipped with AIS, and we expect to see only the larger, or perhaps government vessels, so equipped. The system is primarily a means of lookout and used to determine risk of collision. Requirements of AIS are only to display very basic text information, but this data can be integrated with a chart plotter or a radar display, providing consolidated navigational information on a single display. Some mariners say that this can take the place of radar, but radar can do a lot more, like show land forms and jetties. The Rescue 21 System is being installed all over the United States. It was activated last April 28 in San Diego. This is a system of interactive computer displays, strategically DSC is the system whereby your DSC radio can call another DSC radio without a voice transmission going over the airwaves, and with no one else hearing it except the intended recipient. But your DSC radio does much, much more. If you install a Maritime Mobil Service Identity (MMSI) number, the U. S. Coast Guard, and indeed all rescue agencies world wide, will have access to a database of information about your vessel that is invaluable when searching for you in an emergency. This number is owner/vessel specific, and cannot be transferred. When connected to your GPS, this system will tell searchers exactly where in the world you are. With the higher end radios, DSC also makes you (or, more accurately, your radio) part of a Search And Rescue (SAR) radio net of radio stations that will automatically transfer emergency calls until the Coast Guard receives the message. And the very latest is that you can now buy a hand held VHF radio with DSC and GPS built in! located radio direction finders, voice enhancing and clarification software, interagency (Federal, State, and Local) communications, and tie-ins with DSC radios, EPIRBs and AIS transponders. You will recall that the Emergency Position Indicating System (EPIRB) is a satellite based emergency communications system that works world wide like the emergency part of DSC radio. Locally, radio direction finders and other communications have been installed on Camp Pendleton, Point Loma, and San Clemente Island. This fills in the communications gap that has always existed in this area due to Soladad Mountain at La Jolla blocking VHF reception between the coast north of La Jolla and the Coast Guard in San Diego. In addition, provisions have been made to maintain communications in the event of an emergency or local disaster. Director Mace Mason An AIS equipped system onboard a ship presents the bearing and distance of nearby vessels in a radar-like display format. Editor s Note Director Mason does a fabulous job at consistently bringing us quality education and safety articles that are not only informative, but timely, and functional. This particular article is so compelling that it motivated me to do a little research of my own. I urge our readers to hit the Internet to explore DSC and AIS technologies. Here are a few sites to seed that effort: DSC: AIS: RC Joe Núñez

We had a small but spirited turnout. The winds and weather were just awesome. Bud Nelson was giving lessons on the Nomads frequently leading the Capri s around the first mark or two. I had some inquiries from other sailors about racing but they didn t show? Hopefully next time? In the Capri fleet we were joined for the first time by Vince Williams and Jesse Pruneda who finished third for the day. Congratulations on a job well done and glad to have you join us. Finishing 2nd for the day was the team of Gary Hall and Mace Mason. Finishing 1st for the day was Jim Lackey with Hugh Mast. Jim now has a three point lead over Gary for the season. The next small boat race is not until September. We are looking forward to members who can step up when Silvergate Yacht Club visits the first weekend in September. That could be a good warm-up for the 6th race of the season which is the 11th of September. I hope to see many of you around for both races. Fair winds and calm seas, Daniel Walker SMYC Race Chairman Sailing For those of us who have experienced sailing, the following is but one s perception of what it is like! To those of you who have not experienced it, I strongly encourage you to go sailing and see for yourself what it is all about! Those of you who haven't been out in a while, maybe you need to refresh your memories... "Something about sailing a boat brings so many senses and sensations into play that it's very difficult to pinpoint what it is specifically that makes me like it so much: the sight of sails and sheets overhanging the water; the foam and spray flying as the bow cuts the water; the motion of the boat; the physical and mental ballet necessary to handle the boat correctly, the sound of the wind and the water. A sailboat might just be the most beautiful, sensuous, and intelligent blend of man/machine/elements that exists in the world today. The relationship between the three is the most harmonious I have experienced so far--and besides, you can have a beer while you do it." A friend of Daniel Walker Daniel Walker
8 Santa Margarita Yacht Club SMYC of Camp Pendleton P.O. Box 2043 Oceanside, CA SAIL (Del Mar Marina Phone) ANNOUNCE YOUR PRESENCE The flagpole of a yacht club serves the same purpose as that of a full rigged vessel standing to sea. It identifies the nationality, organization and the master or senior officer present. The intent of raising flags at a yacht club is to consistently convey the maximum amount of information in the fastest time. Thus, someone approaching a club may determine with a glance at the club's flagpole, who is the senior officer present that day. It is therefore incumbent on an Officer, arriving or leaving the club, to ensure his/her flag is displayed or struck so others may readily determine which officers are aboard. Hence, upon arriving at Santa Margarita Yacht Club, officers, please hoist and display your flags! Thank you. Jill Powell Officer of Protocol
