You can race, watch, or help with race committee. It all takes place in the Del Mar boat basin. Come at 11 AM with a sack lunch; the races start at noon. We rent the Capri 16.5 boats for $16 each, which covers the full day s rental. These are great boats (and races) to learn in. Two people race in each boat, with 5 races each day. We look forward to a great year with all the SMYC people. Don't forget to forward any changes or corrections to be made in the Directory. Also remember that all dues are due and payable RIGHT NOW!!! Last year was a banner year for new members, with over 40 new additions to the club roster. Of course, if you ve been updating your membership directory with the additions from each Anchor Line, you ve already got their names, but they re listed on page 7 in this issue as well. Your 2006 club directory will be arriving in the mail soon. We heartily welcome all of you and hope to get to know you better throughout the coming year. We are especially happy to have Paul Bischoff, Ed Henderson and Pat Ayers on board. These three new members have jumped right into being active in the Club. Paul is doing the Anchorline - we desperately needed him - and we have already seen his creative and professional work in the December issue. Ed Henderson saved the day by coming in to fill the Rear Commodore spot. Also, we are so happy to have Pat Ayers onboard as a Director. We've known him for a while around the Marina, and wanted him to be one of SMYC for a long time. Thank you all. At latitude 60 degrees south you can sail all the way around the world. (Why you would want to down there, we don t know.)

COMMODORE S CORNER 2006 is off to a great start! Your club has a full schedule of activities for January and February. You will receive your invite for the Commodore s Reception on Friday January 27 th at 1900 hours held at Iron Mike s (in the South Mesa Staff NCO Club). This will be an opportunity for you to meet and spend some quality time with old and new friends. There will be plenty of food for you to enjoy, and some great surprises as well. The location of this innaugural reception will be at Iron Mike s, located in the Camp Pendleton South Mesa Staff NCO Club. A confirmation postcard will arrive in your mailbox around the same time as this newsletter. If you don t receive a card within a few days, please accept my apologies, and call me at so I can correct the problem. This is going to be a great way to introduce the Bridge to everyone, greet old friends, and make new ones. Beverages and hors d oeuvres will be available for a nominal charge. So now you re sitting there thinking Well, a Friday evening out with some interesting people sounds fun, but I m not convinced. I ve got your convincing right here! 5 Volume 31, Issue 1 Page 5 DEL MAR MARINA COURSE CHANGES Everyone s asking What s the haps at the Marina? Well, now that we ve got a Club member working in the office, we can have all the details of this year s sailing class schedule (but still no preferred moorings, sorry guys!) First, the old Sailing and Coastal Cruising course (which used to cover basic sailing in the Capri 16.5 then the Catalina 22 and took four evenings and four days over two weeks) has been split into two courses. The new Basic Sailing Course is done in the Capri and covers safety, nomenclature, parts of the sail boat, wind, sail theory, rigging, and sailing upwind and down wind. It also covers the dreaded capsizing, overboard recoveries, leaving and returning and last but not least, knots. The class runs Thursday evening, Saturday, Sunday and Thursday evening. Graduates receive the US Sailing Small Boat Certification and are qualified to rent the Capri The new Intermediate Sailing Course is done in the Catalina 22 and has the same schedule as the basic class. Ann will give a thorough review of all previous sailing skills, and then add anchoring, tides and currents, navigation, boating rules along with complete academics on the Catalina 22. Much more time is spent on the sailing environment. This course culminates in a two day cruise to Dana Point. Graduates receive the US Sailing Keelboat Certification and are qualified to rent Catalina 22s, sail in the ocean, and take a follow-on spinnaker class. The Advanced Navigation and Seamanship Course is an extensive course designed to give skippers the skills and self confidence to be able to do all that may be required of a single handed coastal sailor in a proper, safe, and manageable way. The academic backbone of the course includes in-depth navigation theory and numerous navigation techniques. We cover aids to global marine navigation including navigation geography, marine weather, publications and charts, tides, currents, and rules of the road. We spend extra time on the concepts and determination of speed, time and distance. Points of sail, sail trim, and precision tacking/jibing are also covered academically. The navigation portion of the course culminates with a three day navigation practical (cruise) to San Diego and Mission Bay. The boat handling portion of the course stresses precision sailing and covers (but is not limited to) all points of sail, tacking, jibing, anchoring to a specific point, several methods for recovering a person overboard, control sailing to a point, reefing, sailing a range, and heaving to. Boat handling culminates in a seamanship practical (competition between all skippers) that rewards proficiency in all aspects of boat handling. This course qualifies Skippers to take rental boats overnight. This is a one month course, one week of which is a weather back-up. Each week is one evening and Saturday and Sunday, all sailing is done in Catalina 27s. The Basic Sailing Course will be taught once a month for eight months beginning in April. The Intermediate Sailing Course will also be taught once a month for six months beginning in April. The Advanced Navigation and Seamanship Course will be taught once in May/ June and once in September/October. AHH! Something for everyone!!! BLUE GAVEL AUXILIARY NEWS From the President: The installation of new members for our select group will take place at Mission Bay Yacht Club on February 4 th along with the Blue Gavel installation. All members of Blue Gavel and Auxiliary are invited to join in the fun evening with a special dinner that MBYC is putting together for us. Please contact me for reservations. Our train ride to Tecate is right on track. The final details will take place on the 16 th of January and the invitations will be going out in early February, so keep an eye open to read about all the fun we will have.
