1 September 2009 Volume 38, No. 9 Editor: Lisa Kelley leezer4@yahoo.com The Bowsprit Commodore, Walter Crawford, Chip Spence + Rear Commodore, Harry Armenia + Vice Commodore COMMODORE S WATCH SEPTEMBER 2009 Members of the Bay Yacht Club are having a great time with their friends and enjoying a variety of activities, some scheduled and some impromptu. The Clubhouse amenities, including the patio, deck, lounge, galley, and mess are being utilized to the fullest, and not just on Saturdays. August scheduled activities consisted of the Navy Regatta, the Sat Series Race #6, the Gel Coat Repair Education Program, the Commodore s Cup Race and Dinner and other Sat night dinners, all of which provided a great time for everyone. September will bring the Cruise to Mud Island, the Sat Series #7 Race, Cruise to Island Moorings (unfortunately, due to schedule conflicts, PIYC will not be joining us), a couple Sat night dinners, and the annual auction on Sept 26. Be sure to bring all your neat and valuable stuff and donate to the Club for the auction. The semiannual General Membership meeting and election of officers for 2010 is October 10. The Board of Directors, subject to confirmation by the General Membership at the meeting, elected Jo Ann Robertson to Treasurer for the remainder of the year. The Nomination Committee has posted and published their 2010 nominations for your consideration. Other agenda items may include proposed changes to the Bylaws, the Financial Audit Committee report, and new Awards to be considered. Be sure to check out the web site for the most current info possible on all the Club activities and information, forums, and important links to sites believed to be of interest to our members. 2 2 RACING NEWS RACING Nine boats entered the 2009 Commodore s Cup Regatta on August 29. The Race Committee of Mary Herrington, Donna Gibbs, Pat Baldwin, Carla Frank and Jim Robertson were embarked in Cabaret, graciously volunteered by Harry Armenia and Linda Guiffre. Race 1 started shortly before noon with boats competing on a 4 mile windward-leeward course. The gentle west wind never exceeded seven knots and averaged between four and five. Sailing in wind like this is a challenge for anyone and more so for Corpus Christi Bay sailors who are used to considerably more horsepower in their sails. As soon as last boats ghosted across the finish line on the final downwind leg of race 1, Cabaret was underway to establish a new start line in anticipation of the afternoon sea breeze and accompanying wind shift. When Race 2 started 40 or so minutes later, there was sufficient wind to keep the racers moving, but just barely. Crossing the start line and tacking toward the weather mark required skill, concentration, continuous attention to sail trim and crew placement for weight distribution. With the height advantage of Cabaret s bridge, the Race Committee could see the southeast breeze filling in and it slowly came to the racers as they got near the first mark. By the time all were around, there was sufficient wind for a fast reach to the second mark and a run to the finish. 4 4 Candidates for election to offices at the October General Meeting Commodore Harry Armenia To those who do not know me, my name is Harry Armenia. I have been a member of the Bay Yacht Club since 2002, serving as Vice Commodore this past year. I have served on the by-laws committee in I have previously served with the Coast Guard Auxiliary for eight years and has Flotilla Commander for two of those years. I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge over the years in the club and boating in general. If elected as Commodore I will to the best of my ability. I look forward to working with you in the future and would appreciate your support for this position. Vice Commodore Chris Colley I have been a member of for the last few years. As a previous director, member of numerous committees and an active participant in a few of our recent renovation projects I have witnessed first hand the dedication and commitment of both the Membership and Board of Directors in charting a new course for the Club. What we have all achieved is quite remarkable... In response to the Nominating Committee putting forth my name, it would be an honor to serve the. Rear Commodore Chip Spence In April of this year, I was asked to fill the unexpired term of the Rear Commodore. I meekly accepted. What an eye opener this has been! I bring to this club the ability to interact with people. I tend to be a "can do" type person and despise the words, "That is the way we've always done it." With that being said, I was somewhat ill prepared for the work ahead as an officer of. I have learned a tremendous amount in regards to the club's operations. The bylaws needed to be reviewed and I was asked to serve on the committee, and the membership process required some revision. This has been a work in progress and it has been a time consuming job therefore I have enlisted the help of three additional members which comprises my membership committee. As the process continues, I find myself anxious to complete the work and enhance club membership and growth. I have been asked to serve another term as the Rear Commodore and I will accept this position upon approval of the general membership. Treasurer Jo Ann Robertson I have an Associate Degree in Accounting. I worked with oil and gas companies, and several individual small businesses. My last eight years of employment were as the Financial Manager for a church and its private Christian school. I performed an official audit of another private Christian school in our area. The tasks performed were everything from payroll to accounts receivable with the emphasis of monthly financial reports to the owners or to the Church and School s Board of Directors. During my employment, I worked with several financial computer programs and one of those was QuickBooks Pro, which the Club is currently using. My reason for applying for the position of Treasurer is to offer accurate financial reporting where our members can have access to their investment in the Club. Our Club is a social Club, yet it should have financial accountability as a business. My intention for this position is one of service to our members and as a steward of your monetary investment. Secretary Jerry Vaughn Director 1992 (partial year), Vice Commodore 1993, Secretary 1994, Commodore 1996, Rear Commodore 2000 & 2006, Secretary 200 (partial year), Secretary Director 2 years Bill Carrothers It would be an honor and a privilege to serve the members of in my best capacities and experience as a business person as well as a sailor. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and understanding that I have gained this last year by working on the Bylaw, Financial Planning and Audit Committees and in the development of the website. Director 2 years Russ York I believe my experience as a career U.S. Naval Officer and aviator has provided me with the requisite skill set to successfully serve as a director of the Bay Yacht Club. As the Commanding Officer of two naval aviation squadrons, I was responsible for every facet of organizational life administration, operations, maintenance, and safety. While certain differences exist, there is great commonality in the challenges faced by both civilian and military organizations. I have successfully met those challenges in the past, and I am confident of my ability to meet them in the future. In addition, I have extensive experience in the financial analysis arena having served in that capacity at the headquarters Navy level. I appreciate the confidence shown me by the nominating committee and pledge my very best effort if elected by the membership of Bay Yacht Club. 4
