1 Volume 16 Issue 9 September 2012 COMMODORE S CORNER Congrats to Wes, Bryan, Tiffany and crew for hosting a successful Jet Nationals. The regatta was well planned and organized. The Plain Dealer Jet picture is something to be proud of and a positive representation of our club. Our LSYC website is being revised currently and will be ready shortly, will keep you posted. We will have a faster tool with which to communicate information and market our club. New club porch lights will be installed shortly. A Perch Fishing Tournament and perch dinner is scheduled for Saturday, September 22, The fishing tournament will start at 7AM 12Noon, prizes will be given for the biggest fish and the most fish caught. The Perch Dinner will begin at 5PM 7:30PM. The perch for the dinner is not dependent on the tournament catch but will be donated by Ken Beresh (LSYC powerboat docker). Thanks Ken! Cost and more info TBA. This year we will host a Club Picnic rather than Change of Watch celebration. Our effort is to make this event more affordable and to enable us to put dollars in a Capital account so that we have a savings in case a major club need arises. The club picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 30 at Buelah Beach in Vermilion from 1PM 5PM. The cost per member will be minimal, just bring a side dish/dishes to share. There i s a nice beach, volleyball already set up, kayaks (maybe for a kayak poker run?) and entertainment. A General Membership meeting will be scheduled for that day as well. 2 Page 2 September 2012 FLEET CAPTAIN Wes Scott Gibbs Race - Phinneys backyard Jet 14 National Championship Thanks to a great and consistent effort by a number of club members I can report that the Jet 14 Nationals was a great success. Twentyfive boats made an appearance at LSYC and each day offered wind, sea and course challenges equal to the national status of the competition. While the majority of our competitors were from Ohio, we also had a sizable number from New York, New Jersey and North Carolina. The Parker family was well represented with four boats skippered by club members Bryan and Tim along with Bryan's dad Dick and Tim's son Seth. Bryan's Mom, Debbie, provided a safety boat that included room for spectators and pictures. Both Thursday and Friday offered enough wind to present whitecaps to the fleet. This was a challenge to those competitors who normally sail on inland lakes and rarely see more than a ripple on the water. These winds also threw a number of boats for a spill, but our mark and safety boats (and the ODNR/Watercraft patrol) were right on top of each capsized boat. Many thanks to our club volunteers: Don and Claudia Kaspar and Bobby and Joyce Rhodes kept the fleet well fed and entertained each evening. Ron Rychel, Paul Kalister, and Debbie Parker offered up their power boats to handle marks and keep the fleet safe. Paul Burik and Scott Peterson added two sailboats to provide extra picture and safety boat coverage. Scott took out the Cleveland Plain Dealer photographer to take pictures which resulted in Sunday PD coverage on the 19 th. Chris Glynn provided yard support and worked a day of mark boat coverage. Ryan Pinter was present everyday on the windward mark boat. Ray Peters and Lou Ruscitto did daily stints helping PRO Steve Harris run the signal boat. Continued on Page 4

3 Page 3 September 2012 New Sea Scouts join the group for a sailing adventure. LSYC successfully hosted Jet 14 Nationals. With over twenty boats in attendance, the three day regatta was well received. Many thanks go to Wes Scott, Don and Claudia Kaspar and the many volunteers.

Other members (Brej, Gormley, Headley and Wismer) made themselves available on-call should a protest be lodged none were. Tom Gibbs Memorial Kelleys Island Race Seven boats made the annual run to Kelleys Island this year. Six actually raced, one was vacationing in the islands and joined the fleet for the Saturday Steak Fry. We had our usual, fickled winds with good breezes at start and finish and light to dead calm in the middle. Each day the wind finished the day coming anew from a different direction driving the string of competitors back together at the finish. But both days featured glorious sun and pleasant weather. Members Mike and Kathey Phinney were, as always, the perfect hosts for the mid-race Steak Fry at their Kelleys Island cottage. Their water-front cottage provides a clear view of the race course back east toward Lorain and our shore support commented that they had no problem monitoring our progress to the Kelleys finish while sipping their drinks on the Phinney's patio. Many thanks to the Phinneys for being the very best of hosts! Thanks also go to Don and Claudia Kaspar for moving the Saturday night meal to the island as well as the setup and take-down for Saturday's steak fry and Sunday's breakfast. Finally, thanks to our Star Support. Ray and Jim Peters, Thad Brej and Dick Pinter who ran the starts each day and spent the hour or two required to finish the whole fleet. Congrats to Windarra and Great Scot for correcting out first on Saturday and Copacetic and Sand Dollar who took linehonors on Sunday. Mid-way awards (bottles of rum) were handed out at the Saturday night steak-fry. Overall awards will be presented at the LSYC Beach Party at the end of September. It was a great weekend and I'm hoping next year we'll have an even larger turn-out from our membership. It's more than just a race! Club Racing Coming to an End The Interlakes schedule ends with a final race night on the Thursday following Labor Day. Scheduling difficulties have made consistency a problem in this fleet. True to our goal of controlling costs, we didn't get out every week as many times no more than two boats were willing to go. I hope next year will see a better turn-out. The Auxiliaries have been our most consistent fleet making appearances most Wednesday nights. Perhaps it was more the weekly meals that capped off the night than the racing that drew them? They're schedule runs through the end of September. The Star fleet haven't been out every Sunday either, but mostly due to the fleet representing LSYC at various regional Star events. The Stars plan to race through the first Sunday in October. Finally, we tried to get the last Combined Course Saturday race run on the eleventh. But the weather was having none of it. Only three auxiliaries actually went out, and quickly decided against a race. We are still working on rescheduling this event That date (August 11) was also the annual Falcon cup and members Dale and Maggie Gormley drove their J30 Sand Dollar through their first official Death Roll broach to a fifth overall finish in a fleet of 54 boats. Awards for our various club fleets are planned for the October Clam Bake.
