May the Ice begin as you know as Commodore I have guaranteed a good ice season, started out good and now the warm December has turned off the ice machine for a while. It s been 6 years since good ice on Maumee Bay all odds is it will be a good one at least I sure hope for a great season. The Toledo Ice Yacht Clubs 100th birthday party will be December 31,2018 at Toledo Yacht Club flyers were sent out with the Steak Roast reminder (call Jamie Matuszak for reservations at ) I sure hope the membership will respond and support this monumental occasion, It will be a night of entertainment, heavy appetizers good friends and a celebration for this great clubs 100th year. Bring your friends or family to enjoy and listen to the history of this club, Ken Dickson will speak at 7pm. Thank you, Ken, for all your hard work on putting these past 100 years in perspective. Look forward to seeing the book which will be available the night of the celebration. The 2019 TIYC 100th-year calendars are here and available at our Friday night meetings or you can give me a call, the cost is $ We would like to thank Bob, and Ann Foeller for their expertise and help (mostly computer help TG) lol in helping us get the calendar completed could not have done it without you, thanks for your help and support. Thank you, John Greiner, for your open hospitality at the loft, for the annual Christmas meeting. Hopefully, the runner seminar will be beneficial to all. Let s see who has the oldest set of runners I think there will be some competition. Lol TIYC ladies auxiliary Christmas Party was held on Sunday, December 2,2018 at Jolly Rogers Sailing Club. I know the kids had a great time and Thank you for supporting the TIYC kids and grandkids, Winterfest will be February 1 and 2nd 2019 at Ottawa River Yacht Club this is one week later than usual due to ORYC s Ball. Keep the date open to come and enjoy the camaraderie of our members. Sure hope we have ice it would be great to sail around to the river again it has been a few years since we have been able to sail around the horn. Please try to attend the meetings on Fridays to be advised on the latest and greatest of the TIYC happenings. Race Chair Tim Branson will be available to sign racers up for club races at the meetings. 2 Chills and Spills December 2018 page 2 From the Vice Commodore It is hard to believe that the holidays have arrived already. We are quickly approaching the first day of Winter and our ice boat season has already begun! Our 2018 Steak Roast was a huge success put on by our Rear Commodore Keith Wells. It was a great time had by all with the excellent turnout at Toledo Yacht Club. The staff did a wonderful job with the Food and Service, and it looks like a great place to have a meal before a meeting! Our meetings are in full motion on Friday nights and the crew of the 100th year party has been busy making plans for our New Year s Eve party! We look forward to celebrating and enjoying yet another evening at Toledo Yacht Club. Past Commodore Ken Dickson has made an excellent book documenting much of the history of the club. We sure are lucky to have someone such as Ken willing to put this amount of time into a treasure like this. One thing guaranteed is nobody will be disappointed! I have left something important out of my last newsletter article, and that was Pat Hall s involvement in the Point Place Parade. She had headed up a committee to create a float for the parade pulled by an antique tractor. The effort was amazing and also had the help from much of the women s auxiliary. We were lucky to have her do this representing the club in the parade. I apologize for missing this in my first . Finally, I was lucky to take the time to join some other members sailing the Western Challenge. It was quite a marathon due to the distance, but that did not deter many. There were sailors from the east coast, Kingston Ontario and a few people made the trip from Europe! The regatta had near 60 boats registered, and there were a few other boats that just came out to sail. The event took place on Battle Lake in Battle Lake Mn. Friday was a wonderful day of sailing with mild wind and an excellent opportunity to get the boats moving for the first time. Saturday we had quite a ride! Winds were up, and there was some fast action. Four races were held in Gold and Silver fleets, and everyone was rushed into the season quickly. Jacob Stange was the youngest participant with his DN Opti, and he showed us he did not forget what he had learned last season. The competition was first class at this regatta and a great way to enter the season. It was my first time attending, and I will for sure put this on my schedule for next year. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We should all welcome winter and hope for some cooler temperatures. Worlds and North Americans are hosted in the Central region this year, and our very own Past Commodore Rob Holman is the Central region commodore. I plan on attending this event, and it would be great to get as many TIYC members sailing as we can! It sounds like a great time in the making. 3 Chills and Spills December 2018 page 3 I C E C H I P S Well, "Chippers" it's been a 100 years of doing it on ice...sailing that is! Ahem... What started in the old country, Holland (?) and here at the late 19th century at Toledo Yacht Club an progressed to what it is today from huge stern steer "YACHTS" of passenger capability, rum running an just plain fun to "Hi-Tech" flatout racing machines! Kinda makes ya' wonder what happened to all those old "Yachts"? Those old crafts are part of the T.I.Y.C., and each one had or has been in our lore and history. It's understandable that it takes a little more work (understatement) to get the "Thrills and Spills" than of the "techies." Fortunately, there are a few diehards who won't give up the ghosts of these historic beasts. As you guessed, I'm a little parcel to the "Yachts" of yesteryear, for when you go to a "BIG." regatta, the crowds are around the "BIG" boats and the fancy enclosed ones. Oooh! What a concept and comfy! Now if I could find a big enough bubble to...! Hmmm... As of late "Mother Nature" has not been too kind lately here and the stories of past adventures are hard to believe. It was a different time for which hundreds of spectators lined the shoreline to watch. Now it's done on Facebook, I Phones, Internet, etc. etc.! Things change, and this "ole" fossil who's been at it for just over half life of the T.I.Y.C. is creaking along hopefully can continue. We need some young bucks to help carry on and put a real commitment to preserve our past. Check out some remnants of the past at Bill's, the runner collection, a wonder what yacht they belong to an what owner built them! Most are gone, but their legend carries on. Hats off to those founders and who would think it would last to see "100" years of doing it on ice... Ahem... sailing! P.S "Got'a keep those young bucks, and a few geezers mind out the of the gutter!" On a sad note we lost some of our members this year, some too soon. Our condolences. Think Ice!
