1 The Skulldugger Monthly Newsletter of Jolly Roger Sailing Club From our Commodore Hank Wasilausky 2017 OFFICERS COMMODORE Hank Wasilausky VICE COMMODORE Don Schalitz PAST COMMODORE Don Teczynski FINANCIAL SECRETARY Dick Harley TREASURER Jim Bradley RECORDING SECRETARY Elizabeth Teczynski MEMBERSHIP Phil Fry TRUSTEES Con Crowley Barb Gall Neil Green Norman Longberry Dear Shipmates, The date of the Open House has been rescheduled for Saturday, August 26. This will be an all hands on deck event, so please volunteer to help out. Co-chairs are Patti & Neil Green, Don Teczynski, and Phil Fry. Please contact one of them and tell them how you can help out. We want this to be a publicity event for the surrounding communities and demonstrate what sailing and are all about. We would also like to have some sailing demonstrations, and demos of raising sails (at the dock). There will be no rides for non- members. If some members would volunteer their expertise, I would appreciate it. It would be nice to have some Optis & Lasers sailing on the river, a Catalina or two at dockside, and perhaps a larger cruising boat, also at dockside. There will be a meeting of the Open House committee Tuesday, August 1st for anyone willing to participate. (For further details, see article inside.) The FALL SERIES regatta is also being planned for September Again, lots of help will be needed to make this Jolly Roger regatta fun and successful. This event is one of mainstays of and a points counter for AYC awards. Contact Vice Commodore Don Schalitz for more information and to volunteer your valuable expertise. Many thanks in advance for your tireless work! Kudos go to the Junior sailors and the tireless work of their leaders Leslie and Maria, and the endless support of the parents. The Junior sailors made a fantastic showing at the Pinkley Cup, the Ottawa River club race, and the Carson Cup regattas. You should see the smiles!! Make Jolly Roger great again! There is MUCH to do.this is an all hands on deck event.so please set aside some time to help make this a wonderful event. If you haven t been to the Club recently and/or need work hours, this would be a great time to contact us and offer to be of some assistance. A flyer announcing this event is on the next page. Please make copies and circulate in your neighborhoods, work places, among your friends.anywhere you feel there may be an interest. We will also need some House and Yard work parties to make sure the yard and the Club are in tip top shape. Be sure to contact Neil and/or watch your for dates and times. Thanks, Neil and Patti Lunch Bunch Vince Hebert vcatvince@hotmail.com Hi Everyone, Lunch Bunch for this month will be on Wednesday, August 16th.. 4 Come to the Jolly Roger Sailing Club Open House Saturday, August 26 Noon to 4 p.m. See all that has to offer. Learn about both Adult and Junior Sailing Classes. Visit our clubhouse. Check out our docks. Club open to Public. Cash Bar Refreshments will be served. 4

5 From our Membership Chairman Phil Fry Just a reminder that the graduation for our 2017 Adult Sailing Class is Monday, August 14 th at 7:00 pm. All students and club members are invited to attend. This is a great way to meet our new students, some of whom have already joined the club. Instructors should reach out to their students with a reminder of the event and a personal invitation to attend. We will be serving pizza from J-Cups. We will be asking for a cash contribution to cover the cost of the dinner, with those donations going to the club. If you can, please bring a dessert or salad to share. If you were a student or an instructor, don t feel obligated to make a donation. You are our guest. In addition to dinner, we will also have a trivia contest for our new students. Bragging rights always go to the instructors whose students have done the best. We ll also be talking about the club, what it has to offer, and the next steps to be taken by these future sailors. It is a great time to recruit new members into. Please RSVP by or phone if you can attend, so I know how many pizzas to order. 6 For any of you who attended last year s Awards and Change of Watch Banquet, you will remember that more than half of the 11 winners from last year s 300 Raffle were Club members. In fact, the $1,000 top prize winner is a member. So, don t miss out on your chance to be a big winner this year. Again, a 300 Raffle is being done as a fund raiser for our annual Change of Watch and Awards Banquet. Only 300 tickets will be sold. 1st prize is $1,000 with 10 additional $100 prizes. So, there are 11 chances to win.if your ticket is drawn for a prize, it is put back in the hopper for additional chances to win. Tickets are $20 each and are available for purchase at all Club meetings and events. See Jan Wasilausky or any of the Club Officers and Trustees to purchase tickets. Sue Daniel sscrdaniel@hotmail.com The time has come again to make plans now for the.. 22nd Annual Last Bash to the Bay!!!! We will be returning to Put In Bay, Miller Marina. 7 From the Juniors Leslie Dietsch The Junior Sailing program is cruising and racing at a fantastic pace this season. We've expanded our membership and kids on the water to at least 13 new sailors and 8 sailors from years past. All have been sailing either Optis or Xcites. A huge thank you to all Jolly members supporting the program but especially our Commodore Hank, Neil Green, Don Carston, Don Fritz and Seth for putting in the extra time either on Wednesdays or throughout the week. If it weren't from this team, I wouldn't be able to get these kids on the water. I've never seen a more committed team of members, parents, and friends working toward the common goal. The race team has had a pretty active season. 5 sailors traveled to Mentor Harbor Yacht Club for the 2017 Junior Olympics- a 2 day event. High winds and big waves didn't deter our sailors. All kids came off the weekend ready for more. Sandusky Sailing Club hosted the next event where we had 4 sailors step up to sail- again in high winds and big seas. The final weekend in June was spent at North Cape Yacht Club. They hosted the ILYA travelers series on Saturday with big courses, big wind and big waves. Three sailors went into 'survival mode' and pushed their boats on. On Sunday, those same three sailors performed well at the NCYC hosted AYC Carson Cup. The team took a first (Cecilia Dietsch), a third (Mallory Dietsch), and a 5th (Elise Fick). Cecilia Dietsch took the most improved sailor award as well. I couldn't be more proud of ALL of our Junior sailors. And proud to be part of the family. Leslie 7
