2 COMMODORE: AL DREW Hello Sunseekers! February was a very busy month with the Commodore s Ball, AYC Weekend, and all the other activities we had at the club. I hope everyone had an opportunity to attend these events because they were a great time. A big shout out to the SSBC Ball Committee for a job very well done! Also congratulations to Sue Pomerleau and everyone that helped with the AYC Room. We had lots of very positive comments from many people. During our last meeting PC Matt Romak announced our member of the year for 2013 which is Larry Alexander. Please congratulate him when you have the opportunity. March will be another fun month at our club with St. Patty s day party along with various other events going on at the club. Please watch the s and visit the website for details. Lady Carolyn and I attended Elba Mar and North Cape Balls in February. Coming up in March we will be attending Ford Yacht Club, Monroe Boat Club and Point Place Boat club. Join the fun, be active in the club. Thank You, Al Drew Gibraltar Community Center Fully Equipped Kitchen - Large Rooms Ideal for Weddings - Parties Receptions - Meetings
3 VICE COMMODORE: SUE POMERLEAU AMAZING! Look around because our club is full of truly talented and amazing members! The SSBC 1880 s Wild West room for AYC was fantastic! We may not have won best room but we are out there showing that SSBC is here to play and win some of these awards. I could not have done it without the help of these remarkable members: Bob Newman design & build and did an outstanding job with the western window! Jerry McGraw design & build plus loading and unloading, taking down and anything that needed to be done! PC John Robbins & Lady Rita design & build and beautiful job on the curtains! Keith Waddle & Sandi LaFrance design & build and so very thankful for the use of the truck! Commodore Al Drew driving the truck, loading and unloading, putting up and taking down! Rear Commodore Jeff Upholzer design & build and thinking of the saloon name Tom Kat Saloon! PC Derrick Ball and Sgt at Arms Mark Hendertilo unloading and putting up the walls and decorations at AYC! PC John Hopper unloading and loading, putting up and taking down walls and decorations at AYC! PC Matt Romak taking down the walls and loading into the truck after AYC! Teri Prodan delicious food both Friday and Saturday! All the bartenders: Dennis Stechschulte, Jason Klimowicz, SSOTY 2013 Larry & Sharon Alexander, Jen Gracia (who also helped take down), Jerry McGraw and Bob Newman. A few people stepped in from time to time as well like PC Rob Falzon and others! All the members who attended, dressed up, and helped out along the way! Lady Bob who helped with everything, went without sleep Saturday morning and kept me sane! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ALL!! I am truly blessed to have the help from so many of you! Those walls are heavy and it s a lot of physical labor, creative minds, and time consuming efforts which I cannot thank you enough! Hopefully I didn t leave anyone out if I did, please accept my apology and know how thankful I am for all your help! Karaoke night was a huge success! Thank you so very much Sandi LaFrance for all you do!! We have some talented singers among us! Superbowl Sunday was another great success, except for the actual game! What a blow out! Thank you to all who attended and hope you were a winner! The St. Patrick s Day party is our next big event! Doors open at 1 pm, Maggie is back for sing along from 4 6 pm, hoping to find a bagpiper from 7-8 pm and Metro Music DJ from 9 pm midnight! Be sure to attend and celebrate the IRISH in all of us! I will need some help with putting up and take down of the tent and security at the door in 2 hour increments SSOTY Jan Marcum will be requesting help for food donations. All of this goes towards your work hours, so please sign up to help! 4 REAR COMMODORE: JEFF UPHOLZER Greeting SunSeekers, Although it is the shortest month of the year, and an even shorter month of bar days due to the SunSeeker s Ball and the AYC Ball, February was once again a big success for our club s bar operations. We have an awesome group of regular bartenders in PC Mike Chamberlin, Craig Harter, Janet Robinson and Jennifer Gracia. And we also have some new members stepping up to the challenge, including Wendy Hursin. Thanks to them we are able to keep the bartender calendar full. But there is always room for more bartenders, so sign up for a slot on the club website in the Members Only section. And if you aren t sure what all is involved in bar tending, contact me and I ll get you set up. By now most of you have picked up your 2014 SSBC membership cards. New for this year you will notice that they are not only your membership ID, but they also contain a magnetic strip on the back that is loaded with a $50 credit to be used at the club. Additional funds can be added to your card at any time via the bar register. Just ask your bartender. And don t forget to treat your card as you would treat cash. The balance on the card is lost if you misplace it. With March of course comes March Madness. With 4 HDTV s now around the clubhouse for your viewing pleasure, come on up to the club this month and catch some exciting college basketball action. Whether it s Michigan, Michigan State, or some other team that you cheer for, catch all the bracket action at the club. Or if basketball isn t your thing, watch some exciting Red Wings hockey or Tigers spring baseball games, all in high definition. As always, we encourage ALL members to help keep the club clean! Please do your part whenever you are at the club. And we thank all those who can join us during PC Derrick Ball s monthly Monday cleaning nights! It makes a huge difference and it shows. See you at the club and soon on the docks! Jeff Upholzer SSBC Rear Commodore
5 FLEET CAPTAIN: CHAD GRONDA Wow, is it cold out there. Every time we think that were turning the corner towards spring, Old man winter comes back and says Hello. With all this cold weather it was nice to hop on a bus with friends and head down to the Detroit Boat Show. So many beautiful boats to choose from, all the excitement really got my motors spinning and it was a great time for all that attended. Reports have come back into the Fleet Captains Office from social media (Face book) that our very own SSBC pilot Matt Jamison and his Wife Jayne (Final Approach) posted pictures and Lake Erie is really frozen solid for miles. Our very own Rear Commodore Jeff Upholzer (Livin It Up) also got a special flight with Matt and stated it was a wonderful time flying around Detroit, Gibraltar and the Detroit Lighthouse. With that being said, please be very careful this spring when starting to swim in and around Lake Erie. Water temperatures will likely take some time to warm up and you should be very careful when par taking in spring time water activities. Don t forget to update your calendars for this year s Events outside the Club. The SSBC website is a great place to find out all the times and dates for events, just in case you forget. Here are a couple big ones to remember. Let s not forget, if you plan on earning a perfect attendance flag this year, you must make all the Poker Runs by boat, and stay for at least eight hours. Here s the list and addresses if you plan to attend by car, and let s not forget, this is open to the public, so bring your friends and make sure they sign the SSBC book so we can win the award for most participation June 13-15: Cooley Canal Yacht Club Bono Road Curtice, OH Phone: (419) June 27-29: Wyandotte Yacht Club 3 James Desana Drive, Wyandotte, MI Phone: Russ Vaughn July 11-13: Ottawa River Yacht Club 5844 Edgewater Drive Toledo, Ohio (419) July 26: SSBC Luau at Silver Shores Marina 3 James Desana Drive, Wyandotte, MI Phone :Russ Vaughn July 18-20: Riverview Yacht Club 5981 Edgewater Drive, Toledo, OH August 15-17: Ford Yacht Club South Pointe Grosse Ile, Michigan (734) August 23: SSBC Dingy Thingy Starts out at Celeron Island Have a great day!
