1 W E S T S H O R E S A I L C L U B May 2018 From The Commodore... Aloha I know it has been a couple of weeks but I am still on a high from this year s themed Ball. The idea of having a themed party seemed to be a big hit this year and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. Again, this is due to the wonderful Ball Committee that really pulled together a good time for everyone that attended a big thank you goes out to the Committee Chairperson Karen Laughner and her Lady associates Alison Dumke, Christie Yee, Sandy Baumgartner, Cindy Lozon, Sharon Boardman who arranged the event, the desert experts -- my sisters, Lori and Karen, and the photographer extraordinaire Paula Anderson. Again ladies, I cannot say enough about what a great job you did this year! Also, Gale Laughner did a great job as he hosted us all as our Master of Ceremonies, Don Baumgartner did a wonderful job as a last minute stand in to provide our invocation as Frank Pavia could not attend, and thank you to the gentlemen that were dragged to help decorate the facility on Friday night by their Ladies you did a great job! I also want to personally thank everyone that purchased a 50/50 raffle ticket last year and especially those that donated their winnings back to the club you know who you are! -- Your support helps keep the cost of the Ball low and allows the club to provide a better experience. Finally, I think I was able to meet and greet -- and thank -- all the members and guest that attended that night but if I missed anyone and for one more time I hope you had a great time and a very heartfelt Thank You for making this second ball as special as the first! The attendance was outstanding, everyone seemed well fed and watered, many were dancing, and everyone seemed to be having fun. It was a good night for WSSC and an evening that I know I will never forget. And if you could not make it to this year s ball, I hope you plan to attend Lance s Ball next year s --- I know that he is already starting to plan a wonderful event for everyone. And PS: the photos will be on their way soon. 2 Page 2 From the Commodore continued from page 1 Well, now that April is behind us, let s start focusing on what we do best Sailing. I know that V/C Lance Y., F/C Chris M., and the Race Committee have been working to get ready for the 2018 Racing season. Thank you to everyone that helped get the buoys ready and their launch and the WNATR Skipper s meeting is the first weekend in May with WNATR starting right after. Not to be outdone, R/C Tim L., F/C Don B., and the Cruising Committee have also been working to get the 2018 Cruising season ready with the first set of cruises just around the corner. Although the weather has not cooperated, I hope all the members have been working hard on getting their boats ready and in the water. Please see articles from the others for more racing or cruising details or below for quick reminders Finally, I hope to see everyone at our next General Membership meeting on May 3, 2017 at Mr. Nick s Quick Reminders: WSSC April GMM meeting on May 3, WSSC Buoy Launch May 5 th ; rain date of May 6 th. WSSC WNATR Skipper s Meeting on May 6 th at GIYC; WNATR First Race on May 16 th. WSSC Ice Breaker Cruise on May 19 th to Bob-Lo. Garage Sale to Support the 2019 Commodore s Ball May 18 th -20 th at the Boardman s home. WSSC Memorial Weekend Cruise to TBM May 26 th Cruising Committee Meeting on May 27 th. Also, check the newsletter, calendar and for other upcoming club events or updates. David PS Special wishes go out to member Stephanie Sakowicz and her husband Kelsey Schnell (from Cheboygan Yacht Club) who exchanged burgees with the DYC Rear Commodore as part of their wedding reception that was held there in April. Congrats and best wishes from your WSSC family! Photo courtesy of Ed Sakowicz

3 May 2018 Page 3 From the Vice Commodore... The buoys are almost done! We had a great crew of workers that got the inspection and work done in one day. I would like to thank Dick Synowiec, Bryce Boardman, David Monk, Tim Lozon, Steve McKeith, and Steve Semenick for getting the work done so quickly. I sent an out to all members to cancel the official work day, as there is only one buoy left to repair and Bryce is working diligently to have the top of it repaired in time for the Buoy Launch. Speaking of the Buoy Launch! Come join the fun May 5 th, 9:00 a.m. at Ford Yacht Club. To those that were planning to volunteer on the work day, I appreciate your willingness to lend a hand and would love to see you at Launch Day! We have secured a permanent phone number for the buoys in case one of them tries to get away. Through the Magic (of) Jack, the phone number on the buoy will stay the same; however who answers the calls can be easily changed each year. Wednesday Night At The Races (WNATR) starts May 16 th. There is a Skippers Meeting at 6:00 p.m. on May 6 th at Grosse Ile Yacht Club. We are in the process of confirming the afterglows with Ford and Grosse Ile Yacht Clubs. If you have not signed up the applications are on our website under the Race Applications tab, on Notice of Race, and on our Facebook Page David Wright has made the Facebook page PUBLIC. To join the group, search for the West Shore Sail Club page on Facebook then click Join Group below the cover photo! David or Christy will acknowledge your request as soon as possible! The racing documents and calendar are being updated regularly and there is a great video of John McCallum winning the award for Cruising Boat of the Year at the Commodore s Ball! I am still in need of Race Committee boats for the three specialty races: Lighthouse Challenge, June 23rd; Doublehanded, August 25th; and Jack & Jill, September 2nd. Christy and I will be at the finish line for the Doublehanded, so the Committee boat for the Doublehanded just needs to start the fun. Please me if you are interested in helping out (noagendacrew@gmail.com) with the specialty races or any of the WNATR. On May 18th, 19th, and 20th Sharon and Bryce will be hosting a Garage Sale with all proceeds to benefit next year s Commodore s Ball. If you have any items you would like to donate, please bring them to Sharon and Bryce s home by May 12th. All unsold items will be picked up for donation on May 21st, so if there are any unsold items you would like returned, please plan to pick them up on May 20th. This is the Annual City Wide Garage Sale weekend, with many homes participating. If you are in the area please stop by and say hello. 4 Page 4 From the Rear Commodore... And before you know it, May is here! After the exceptionally cold and wet April I assume that everyone is slightly behind schedule with many lastminute chores left to do prior to launch. A recent visit to FYC for buoy inspection confirmed this fact. Lots of white shrink wrap still intact! Also, unless you count the numerous fishing vessels, I didn t see any real boats on the water. With that in mind I will keep this article brief. I have plenty to do on this cold and wet final weekend of April. I am intent on removing the wraps from my boat and pulling it out of storage, even if it is raining and 40 degrees! The first WNATR is just a few days away and I am determined to be on the line (If my calculations are correct, I figure I can do well and maybe get a flag for the spring series if the number of boats is under 4). I am certain to be ready for the Ice Breaker Cruise! And barring the closure of both bridges to the Island, Cindy and I will attend the Carvers Home for the greatly-anticipated land cruise. Hope to see everyone there! Oh, and Happy Mother s Day to all of the wonderful women that make our lives wholesome, warm, and loving! Tim Lozon Cruising - Please note- The dates for the weeklong cruise in July will remain the same but the ports of call have been reversed! We will now start at Middle Bass and finish is Leamington. This is due to a music festival at the Lonz Winery (Middle Bass Island) on July 14 th from 12-8 pm. Several local bands, food and wine with winery tours. Sounds like fun! > July Middle Bass Island > July 16 Port Clinton > July Kelleys Island > July 19 Pelee Island > July Leamington May- Swap Meet - bring in your valuable spare boat parts and hopefully someone will take them off our hands and even be willing to pay! June - Chiropractic Dr. Sharon Bianco was very gracious and agreed to move her presentation to to accommodate the snow in March. July and onward - Open to ideas and looking for volunteers! Please contact me with your suggestions.

13 March 2018 Page 13 Border Crossing Information: Updated, 1/2018 The best way to return to the US is to obtain either an I-68 or Nexus card for everyone on the boat. The captain is to report in at in the Detroit Area (Monroe to south of Selfridge). If you have BR numbers, the report in interview is normally very short and easy. The cost of an I-68 is $16 per year per person, with a maximum of $32 for a family. Children are included on their parent s I-68. It is only good for one season. You can fill out the forms and obtain the I-68 at the bridge or tunnel. Request your BR number at the same time. This is the letters BR followed by seven digits such as BR A Nexus card is $50 for 5 years ($10 per year). One should enroll online. You will have to report to get the card. You can do this at the Ambassador Bridge or the Tunnel. We reported to the Border Patrol station at the Ambassador Bridge. As you approach the Bridge, shortly after turning to the east there is a gate on the left (prior to paying the toll). Go through the gate (you may have to tell an officer at the gate your purpose) to the offices. Obtain your boater number (BR#) when you pick up your Nexus card(s). When we renewed our Nexus cards at the Bridge, the U. S. officers that could help with the BR number were at the same desk as the Nexus (Canadian) Officers, just on the right side of the counter. For more on Nexus go to: trusted-traveler-programs/nexus. Once you have the Nexus card, you can enroll in the GOES program online. This allows using the TSA precheck line at U.S. airports (and is the least expensive way to get this). If your boat 30 feet long or more payment of the user fee is required. You can obtain a DTOPS (Decal / Transponder Online Procurement System) number for $27.50 per calendar year. Information on this is at: The main change is that as of December, the cost of the Customs Decal {users fee} (for boats 30 feet or longer) is increased to $28.24 (from $25). You must have this decal if your boat is 30 feet or more in length. You can obtain it at under the Private Vessel block. If you wish to use the online float plan, you will need a SVRS number. This is the letters BR followed by 9 digits for example BR More information is available on SVRS at Default.aspx. Note, these are not the same as the BR number for calling in. More information on travel requirements is available at:
