1 Starboard Tack W E S T S H O R E S A I L C L U B May 2015 From the Commodore... You can t keep a good man down I want to thank everyone in the club who made this year s Commodore s Ball such a huge success. Lori and I both had a wonderful time even though we lost the dance contest to Ed and Denise Sakowicz. We will have to try harder next year. From were I sat everyone at the ball was having a good time. Thanks again especially to Commodore's Ball Committee led by Karen Laughner. By now, the buoys have been launched and WNATR is set to start the spring series May 13,2015. The Memorial Day cruise is set for the weekend of May 23, On a personal note I am doing really well after my bypass surgery and want to thank everyone for their cards and flowers and many, many, warm wishes. I am lucky to have such a competent bridge taking care of the WSSC business and leaving me with no worries or concerns. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the next GMM. 2 Page 2 Starboard Tack From the Vice Commodore... For those who were able to join us for the Commodores Ball, I hope you enjoyed yourself as much as I did. It was a delightful event. I would like to extend congratulations to Dale Brennan for making 2014 an unforgettable year. Dick Shackelford will surely have a great year as well, as the gavel was passed down to him. Commodore Dick Shackelford presented the PHRF boat of the year to Dick Synowiec and his sailboat Shenanigan. JAM boat of the year went to John Perry and Brenda Woodruff and their sailboat Dragon Lady. Dick also presented the San Pareil award to Sharon Boardman. Our Vice Commodore presented the cruising boat of the year to Chuck and Phae Laskey and their sailboat Passing Wind. Well done everyone. And congratulations to all the cruisers who received their distance mileage flags. The dance contest was a success as Ed Sakowicz and his wife Denise glided across the floor to win the award! The Race Committee has been busy this month preparing for this year s upcoming race season. With the finalization of the twelfth sail instruction for the WNATR courses going out to Chris McCardell and the race committee. They have put to gather many new courses for the year. Well done! May 2nd was Buoy launch day. The sunny and clam day couldn t have been any better to set the buoys in their location for the season. I d like to thank all for their helping to prepare and launch the buoys. Many thanks to Chuck Laskey, Doug Howe, Don Baumgartner, Tim Steffke, Carver Dumke and Dave Monk. Both the Canadian Coast Guard and Canadian Border Control letters have been received. All that is left is the Skippers meeting held at GIYC this May 3 at 7PM. Bryce Boardman From the Rear Commodore... Well the bottom is painted, the hull is waxed and by the time you read this at least one boat should be in the water getting ready for another exciting sailing season. All very good things as the start of racing and cruising is here. Although I was unable to attend the Commodore s Ball honoring Commodore Richard Shackelford, I did see the wonderful job the Committee did setting up the venue the night before and I have had the opportunity to talk with several members who said that it was a well-attended evening and a wonderful event. I was also told that it seemed all who attended had a great time... I am sad I could not attend but wanted to convey my congrats again! The other event in April was the Ice Breaker car cruise to Clamdigger s I was unware that Clamdigger s is also the home to the Lake Erie Offshore Performance Association (LEOPA) which is our newest I-LYA sister club. So, I guess this can also be considered our first trip to a sister club of this year as well. About 21 members attended and everyone seemed to have a good time eating and drinking. Thanks to everyone for attending and I hope we can schedule a couple more sister club trips before the end of the year. May is the start of both the cruising and racing seasons. WNATR starts on May 13 th and the first official club cruise is Memorial Day weekend to Toledo Beach. Please remember that we have a Cruising Committee meeting during our first cruise on Sunday, May 24 th from 2-4 pm at the picnic table beneath the canopy in front of the Tiki Bar at the Toledo Beach Marina. Each of the Port Captains will be providing a status of the remainder of this year s club cruises. As part of the I-LYA clubs, WSSC has also been invited to several other sister club activities. You should have received an regarding these events which include: Steak Night & Name that Tune at Monroe Boat club on May 9 th, Diamond Jack s River Cruise and Dinner on May 15 th, 2 nd Thursdays Polish dinners at Great Lake Steel Boat Continued on page 10

I will be glad to give you your 2015 membership cards. I know there are a few that need to go in the mail, so after the May General Membership meeting, I will put the cards I still have in the mail. I also wanted to thank those folks who looked at the 2015 WSSC Membership roster and offered a few suggestions. It proves you are reading these lists. So I will ask, if there are some corrections, please let me know, since we provide renewal forms, we are asking for updated information. I based the data on what was in the 2014 file, and what was on the 2015 renewal forms. You should also have noticed some names in a light gray rather than black. Those are the people that have not provided any updates or replied to my request for updated renewal form. As it stands in May, we are down in membership by 11 members from last year, putting us at 59. So if you are friends with someone who is not renewed by now, please use a little peer pressure to get them to stay. I will make updates suggestions and corrections, and send out a new Roster. We do have some new members joining this year, so I would like to put their names in print; Welcome aboard to Tom and Jane Langeland, and Darrell Riggs. We also have returning members Tim and Cindy Lozon. We also have an application from Mike and Sandra Zonca and we hope to officially welcome them at the May Meeting. A Special thanks to RC David Monk, who is working hard to get the WSSC name out there and bring in new members. If you know anyone who is interested in sailing, please ask them to join WSSC, even if they belong to other Yacht Clubs in the area, or out of the area since we have members in other states, even in Africa. 6 Page 6 Starboard Tack Promoting the sport of sailing and seamanship since 1972 West Shore Sail Club P.O. Box 369 Trenton, MI starboardtack@westshoresailclub.org Website: PHRF-LE Representative Needed WSSC should have a PHRF-LE representative. For many years, Dick Synowiec was the sole representative from our area, and I joined about seven years ago. One of the requirements to be a voting member of PHRF-LE is that you have to be an active racer. Kathy and my plans are to do extensive cruising on the Great Lakes, which will preclude me doing very much racing, if any. I am reaching out to the membership for a replacement. There are about seven monthly meetings during the winter on Sundays, usually in the Cleveland area (lately in Westlake, Ohio) starting at 10:30 am (we usually leave Grosse Ile at 7:45 am). We had a candidate, but he has issues with Sunday meetings. To become a handicapper, you must attend at least 4 meetings. Our next meeting is May 21 st in Perrysburg, Ohio. There will probably be meetings in September, October, November and December. If you might be interested in becoming WSSC s representative to PHRF-LE, please contact Doug Howe (D1Howe@wowway.com) or Dick Synowiec. 9 MAY 2015 Page 9 WEST SHORE SAIL CLUB BURGEE FLIES IN FRANCE By David Monk The University of Toledo Sail Club is currently in La Rochelle, France racing in the largest collegiate sailing regatta in the world; last year 180 schools competed from 23 countries. As you might remember, UT Sailing competed in the US collegiate regatta as a $200 total support underdog and in true excitement, they won overall and received an invitation to the race in France. During fundraisers, several of our members contributed donations to the UT Sail Club in the name of WSSC; then telling the membership of their adventures, a motion was made at our general membership meeting that WSSC would provide them even more support. Due to our support, UT Sailing recognized our burgee as one of their major supporter including highlighting it on the side of their boat as they race. If you view the photo of their vessel, the WSSC burgee is seen as the 2 nd from the bottom on the headstay and third from the left on the hull. We wish the team the best during the competition and if you wish to follow the developments of their racing, you can follow the UT Sailing Club at their Facebook page:

10 Page 10 Starboard Tack Rear Commodore Report continued from page 2 Club starting May 14 th, 3 rd Thursdays burger nights at Wyandotte Yacht Club starting May 21 st, and 4 th Thursday burger nights at Seaway Boat Club starting May 28 th ; the burger night run each month during the summer on their designated Thursdays. As an I-LYA club, these events and all other I-LYA clubs are open to all of our members. Please remember to bring your WSSC membership card and to sign-in at each of the clubs when you visit them. I have been to all of these clubs several times and they are more than happy to have us as visitors and you will have a friendly, good time. I am also excited to let the membership know that WSSC has also received a formal invitation to attend this year s 27 th Annual Opening of the Island ceremony and events. Although the event takes place at the same time as our Leamington Cruise and the Mill s Race, it is my hope that those members not participating in other events will come to this one. We are the only local club that is not a named sponsor of this event and it would be nice to become more involved. Also as a personal request, any Past Commodore or Board Member that would like to represent WSSC at the Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday, June 6 th at FYC at 1 pm, please let me know by May 13 th. As you do spring cleaning, collect your items and bring them to the Annual Swap Meet at our May meeting. The upcoming presentation schedule for our membership meetings include - June: America s Great Loop: a single handed sailing trip of 5,400 miles Mary Ellen Magile; July: no meeting; August: Wreck Diving - Rich Synowiec. Finally, Vern & Jackie McCardell are planning a trip on the Erie Canal this summer so they will not be using their slip in Duncan Bay. They have offered this dock to the members of West Shore Sail Club (WSSC). The dock is at DBBC which is located in Duncan Bay, Cheboygan MI. The slip is 40 ft. and its number is 255. The Harbormaster at DBBC has requested that prior to someone arriving to use the dock that they call or with their boat name and the date that they expect to arrive. This would help in the event there were more than one boat arriving at the same time. The harbormaster s is harbormaster@duncanbay.org and the phone number is I think that a special thank you to Vern and Jackie is in order for making this dock available to the membership. See you at the buoy installation, the Skipper s meeting, the May Membership meeting, WNATR, an afterglow, or the Memorial Day Cruise. David Monk

15 May 2015 Page 15 U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Small Vessel Reporting System (SVRS) The following information relates to our recent experiences enrolling in the revised SVRS, as well as reviewing the system s operational documentation. The Boater Registration Number (BR#) we each acquired through the application process works something like the old I-68 form. They will allow us to travel to Canada by boat and clear back into the U.S. with just a phone call not a visit to the Detroit Tunnel CBP office or other port-of-entry. The BR numbers are based upon your already acquired federal or state personal and vessel identification, and do not need to be renewed annually. There is also no longer a need to acquire a NEX- US card before making the SVRS application. The application process is on-line and very straight-forward, requiring your passport or passport card number, or an enhanced Michigan driver s license number. Also required is your Michigan boater registration or federal boat documentation information to be entered with the vessel s master s application. Start the whole process at the home page, Please note that each crew member must apply for and obtain an individual BR#, and have a valid address for later communication purposes. As part of the application process, each applicant must also schedule a face-to-face interview with CBP personnel at a designated port-of-entry (such as the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel) and bring the personal identity and vessel registration documents used in their SVRS application. Soon after the interview, you should receive an containing your individual BR# and instructions for initializing your system password. This is very important information because it is used for creation and maintenance of a vessel s identity information and float plans by the vessel master, as well as maintenance of each individual s password security. The float plans are the heart of the system and operate much like flight plans for an aircraft. The vessel master creates a float plan for the trip on the SVRS website via a wizard. The plan, which is assigned a unique number when completed, can also be saved as a template for future voyages to the same foreign destination. All crew members SVRS and non-svrs registered personnel are required to be listed on the float plan. The dates of the voyage are also included in it and the vessel master is required to activate the plan online at least 24 hours before departure. Upon return of the vessel to the U.S., vessel masters are required to call in to the nearest CBP port-of-entry with the assigned float plan number. When calling, it is imperative that they indicate they are registered in SVRS. Float plans can be changed both before and after activation, and up to the time it is closed with CBP. All non-svrs registered crew members included in the plan when closed are required to report to the nearest port of entry CBP station within 24 hours of arrival for a face-toface inspection. This remains the vessel master s responsibility, even though they themselves are registered in SVRS. There is no direct cost for SVRS sign-up and use. The only cost involved is a $27.50 cruising decal if your boat length is 30 ft or larger. That s about all we ve gleaned about SVRS; hope you find it useful. Gale & Karen Laughner
