Events 4 Aug 22 Aug 3 to 5 Sep From the Helm By Lynette Beal, Commodore 2016 By Laws Summary The 2015 By Laws were passed last year by SSSF May The 2016 Board determined there were some changes needed with respect to the Election Time Line, and we also wanted to make all positions elected positions and no longer have appointed positions to assure all Board members could participate fully on the Board. We also changed the Boat Owner s Representative title to Fleet Captain to be more in line with other Sailing Clubs and provide the proper Flag for the Fleet Captain. There is no Flag for Boat Owner s Representative. These will all be Elected Positions once the By Laws are passed: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer, Sailing Director, Social Director, Membership Director, Newsletter Director. IT Director, Fleet Captain The Nominating Committee is finalized at the September General Meeting. The Commodore, Board, and General Membership pick an individual to participate. The Slate of Nominees is presented at the October General Meeting and election held at the November General Meeting. There are procedures for Nominations from the Floor and for absentee ballots in the By Laws. The By Laws Committee looked at the full By Laws Document to make improvements in the language of some sections but did not change the meaning of the section. We also recommended the Grievance Procedures and Roberts Rules of Order be placed in the Policies and Procedures Document rather than in the By Laws. We are recommending a 10% Quorum for General Meetings. Continued on page 2

2 2016 By Laws Summary continued One major change we are recommending is that if one SSSF Member meets and marries within SSSF or meets someone outside the club, both parties must join SSSF together before the marriage. No Married person can remain in the Club if their spouse is not a member. Married individuals become Associate members and cannot hold Office or vote. They must renew annually or will lose their membership. Another change we are recommending is that an individual must be single to join SSSF. Individuals that are separated and not living with their spouse can participate as a Guest but cannot join SSSF until they are divorced. Other improvements include a statement that participation in all committees shall be open to all members. There will be only 3 Standing Committees: Nominating Committee, Pink Book, and Financial Audit. The Committee added a requirement for the Vice Commodore to develop New Member Orientation Packets. All Board Position Descriptions were strengthened. The By Laws Committee member were: Lynette Beal, Debi Hallmark, Gillian O Neill, Anne Ekstrom. Dick Linehan, Nikki McSweeney. You will all receive the proposed By Laws to review two weeks before the September General Meeting. I hope this Summary helps to highlight changes for you. The Committee worked hard to update the By Laws and I would like to thank Debi Hallmark for chairing the committee and putting the Document together. All of the Committee members devoted time and effort. Thank you, Lynette The Starlight Musicals by Lynette Beal SSSF members have had a great summer attending Thursday night Socials at Flip Flops and many have gone to the Starlight Musicals on Friday evenings at Holiday Park! A Tent, Pink Flag and lots of fun has been happening each week. We Tent Hop with Gulfstream Sailing Club and other organizations. SSSF was recognized one Friday by the City of Ft Lauderdale up on stage. That was really cool!! Some fantastic bands have played. Jimmy Stowe and the Stowaways was a blast and we had a Tent Luau! Mr. Nice Guy really rocked and the crowds danced. The last Concert for the summer is 8/5/16 and the Band Pocket Change is playing. I hope you all come out for the End of the Summer Concert Party at 6:00 pm. Holiday Park is located at S Fed Hwy and Sunrise Blvd in Ft Lauderdale. 2

4 SSSF Extended Sail ~ Regatta Time in Abaco Four Sailing Singles boats made the crossing to the Bahamas in perfect sailing weather the week of June 26. The destination was Fiddler's Cay in the Abaco Islands where our captains and crew enjoyed the Stranded Naked, Cheeseburgers in Paradise Party; free cheeseburgers, Bahamian rum, beer, and a good time for all. The event kicked off the 41st Regatta Time in Abaco; nine days of sailboat races between the islands with pre- and post- parties and daytime for cruising, snorkeling and enjoying the local culture. This event is held each year occurring during July 4 US Independence holiday and July 7 Bahamian Independence celebration to show the link between countries. Six Degrees of Separation by Dick Linehan There is a theory and a expression that you know a person who knows another person and so on for six people. That sixth person knows you.

At the bar, was a woman member of our club. So I asked her for a dance. After the dance, I escorted her back to her bar seat. Then I asked the woman who was sitting next to her for a dance.

7 Six Degrees of Separation by Dick Linehan There is a theory and a expression that you know a person who knows another person and so on for six people. That sixth person knows you. This applies to everyone in the western world. In Silicon Valley, it is down to one person. Also, here in the Ft. Lauderdale area, it is also one or two. Recently, I went to a singles dance in Boca. At the bar, was a woman member of our club. So I asked her for a dance. After the dance, I escorted her back to her bar seat. Then I asked the woman who was sitting next to her for a dance. This woman did not know our club member. As we danced she asked me my name. I replied See the woman at the bar sitting next to you. Well, she calls me Xcapt. Dick. There was a brief pause, and then my dance partner said You used to have a small sailboat named Freedom. I was floored! It turns out that she was a member of our club back around 2006 and I had taken her out with a group from our club. In the photo of the Freedom woman sailors, one woman in the photo, had talked with Russ Jones on one sail. It turns out, that they both lived about a block apart on the South Shore of Long Island. And, Russ was in the same high school class as her brother and were good friends. 7
