2 FALL CLEAN UP DAY Annie Floeter FALL CLEAN UP DAY, HURRAY! Fall Clean Up Morning at the club was a high energy whorl of activity with more than eighty members and potential members participating. Starting with a knock-your-socks-off sunrise over the bay, volunteers began arriving at 7:30 and were still polishing and organizing when the football crowd began arriving at noon. We worked hard, met new people, got a few more names straight and were surrounded with good humor. Thanks to everyone who shared their expertise and time! 3 RadioActive Doc Rob The Geiger counters are chirpin away cause the Club has gone Radio Active. With JO joining the Radio Control Fleet we've reached critical mass and are now recognized by theamya.org as club #385. Weather permitting, we'll sail the Dragons on Sunday Afternoons around 2:00 this fall and hopefully on an occasional Friday night. We have some new radio gear and servos in to fix #6 so the Club will have at least two loaners ready for sail if you want to tack one out and back. Just ask JO, Doc Rob or Tom Lechota to get you set up if the wind is right. With Club status we are eligible for fleet discounts, and JO has set one up for us in the Dragon 65 class. The DF 65 is the fastest growing RC class in the world with over 24,000 boats sold to date. With Christmas coming up, perhaps there's a big or little sailor in your family that would love to unwrap one on Christmas Day. That includes tax, title and destination charges, no surprise fees! OK, you may want to buy a metric tap measurer to put it together, but that's the only surprise fee. 4 DICK BABEL CUP MO-18 DICK BABEL CUP 2018 WRAP UP The DICK BABEL CUP is a two race LASER event consisting of the Spring Regatta and the Fall Regatta. Originating in the late 60 s, The Cup was sailed near Easter (Bunny Day Regatta) and the day after Thanksgiving (Turkey Day Regatta) on the waters of Long Lake, Cedar Lake and Elmwood Township inner harbor area. Cold water, snow and freezing main sheets were common. Dick Babel hosted many of the events at his cottage on Long Lake and supported the GTYC Laser Fleet. Over the years, the event has transformed into the GTYC Laser Spring and Fall Regattas that were sailed in June and September this year. The 2018 Spring Regatta was an 18-boat light air event. PRO Jordon Owen was able to start one two leg race in a light NE breeze. The start line was Committee boat bias with a large number of boats trying for that advantage. A left shift with more pressure developed on the first leg giving the advantage to the sailors that were to the left. Doug Carlson showed good boat speed and tactics to be first at the weather mark and go on to win the race. PRO Owen shortened the race after the first run as the breeze fizzled out. There was no more racing making this Spring Regatta the shortest event in recent Babel Cup history. (Bill once earned the cup by sailing his Finn for approximately five minutes during a blizzard in Elmwood Township inner harbor).

5 DICK BABEL CUP MO-18 The Fall Regatta was delayed because of no wind on beautiful Saturday in September and rescheduled for a blustery Friday, September 28. The totals from the two regattas were then added which gave the 2018 Babel Cup to T. Babel, followed by M. Lyons in second and R. Clulo in third. See October Waterlines for complete story.

6 Celebrate Unauthorized Rapture This Friday, November 9th, alumni and friends of the Bohemian Rapture will gather at the GTYC for some socializing. This will be followed by a trip to the Cherry Blossom 14 to watch Bohemian Rhapsody. Who are friends of Bo Rap? Everybody is! Join Higgy, Whip, Betsy, Tom, the Professor, Gilligan and the rest for a fun evening. How about a 7:00 PM movie? Editor s note: This is not a sanctioned GTYC event.

7 Ask Aunt Wauneena Aunt Wauneena Dear Aunt Wauneena, You called it right. Fishtales is 2018 Boat of the Year. Have you followed any other of Mike Fisher s escapades? Signed, Is there more? Dear ITM, Mike s won a lot of races. I like to note the Miami-Nassau Cup. Mike won the 1975 race sailing the Osprey. The following year the race was won by Country Woman which eventually became Traveller, owned by Bob Shaw and Dave Irish. Mike bought Pied Piper and the heyday of One-Ton racing in northern Michigan was on. AW Dear Aunt Wauneena, Do most members enjoy every minute of the day at the GTYC?
