Follow their adventures on Facebook and Yachtscoring.com. Scott s crew includes the Commodore, daughter Katy and Tol Labol. If you haven t read Bob s February 23 rd message to our membership a reprint is included in this month s issue beginning on page 2. If you see Commodore Clark around the club he might quote Uffa Fox. The art of racing is not in winning, but in winning so that the rest of the fleet are pleased you have won, and the only way they can be pleased is for you to have shown better helmsmanship than they and also to have shown perfect sportsmanship. Submissions due by the 4th Tuesday of the month prior to publication words or less please Note: We need Fleet Captains for Big Boat fleet and the Grand Touring Fleet. Another good opportunity to volunteer. The editor. waterlines@gtyc.org
Message from the Commodore Bob Clark Dear Members, The Flag Officers and Board of Directors have undertaken a top to bottom review of the service operations of GTYC. This review includes nearly all aspects of how we deliver food and beverage to the membership and analyzing the structure and efficiencies of the staffing. We also reviewed the current business practices of the club to determine if we were employing what we considered to be Best Practices. Out of this review It became clear to us that we needed to make changes. The Board of Directors believes that some of our current practices, if left unaddressed, could be considered neglectful by the membership. With election to the Board, the membership has entrusted the Officers and Directors with the responsibility to act in the Club s best interest. At this time, both in regards to short term concerns and the long term health of the club, we have chosen to move forward in a new direction. We believe a restructuring of our two full time employees is necessary to achieve the best business practices and deliver the most efficient and cost effective service to our membership. The outcome will include a new position of General Manager, and a restructured Service Manager position. The General Manager will have oversight of GTYC Club operations, facilities, and assets while the Service Manager will oversee the Bar and point of sales operations. This change directly effected our long standing Bar Manager Ian Sterling, who in turn elected to resign. The Club is currently in the process of completing a separation agreement with Ian Sterling. To this point Ian has upheld his part of the process by not publicly discussing the details of the situation and the Club owes him the same respect from our end by not publicly discussing the situation.
Message from the Commodore Bob Clark Moving forward, Jordan Owen shall assume the position of General Manager and Chris Horvath will assume the position of Service Manager. They will serve on an interim basis while the Club proceeds with an open hiring process. The Flag Officers will actively interview prospects to fill these positions. Jordan and Chris will be included in the pool of prospects. Their work during this transition has been outstanding and I would like to personally thank them for their continued support of our Club. Our goal will be to have these two positions filled on a permanent basis by the first of April. All other positions open at the club, including bar-staff and wait-staff, will be reviewed and filled during this process. The current staff, including all employees from last year, will be given first opportunity to interview and accept the available positions. We expect to see many of the same faces behind the bar and believe the opportunity to work at GTYC will be enhanced by our new model, and updated policies and procedures. I appreciate the great concern that has been shown by our members as we all share the desire to protect the special nature of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club. As always, it s both our goal and responsibility to safeguard the health and future of our Club and community. I look forward to sharing more information as we move forward and head into a busy summer. Thanks, Commodore Bob Clark
Misc. Ramblings PC40 Miscellaneous Ramblings..PC40 It s time for my friendly reminder about 9 volt batteries. If you have any of these lying around loose and not in a package be sure and tape the terminals to avoid a short circuit and fire. Even used batteries have enough juice to cause a fire. We had a serious house fire in the next subdivision over recently that was caused by a shorted 9 volt battery. They had just replaced all the batteries in their smoke alarms and tossed them in a shoe box in a closet. And a friendly reminder to not throw any used batteries in the trash. Please recycle them!!! Leelanau and Grand Traverse Counties have 3 or 4 Household Hazardous Waste Drop-offs every year. Take advantage of them and CLEAN OUT YOUR HOUSE!!! Speaking of smoke alarms, did you know that most manufacturers recommend replacing them every 10 years or so. Ours lasted 16. I replaced them all last year with the same make and model # but they had changed the wiring harness so I had to rewire them all. Whodathunk??? Back to sailing. Congrats to Scot Zimmerman and the BAD IDEA crew of Katy Zimmerman, Bob Clark, and Dave Gerber for a 6th place finish at the St Petersburg NOOD Regatta in a fleet of 18 Melges 24s. That s got to feel pretty good!!! Here s an article about some minor changes in the Racing Rules for this year. Check it out. Quiz next month!!! The iceboaters held their North American Championship on Lake Charlevoix the end of January. A correspondent from Rolling Stone Magazine was there and here is his article and video. Iceboating has been hit and miss recently, but I understand that they sailed on Houghton Lake on Saturday, Feb 24. We were in Ohio for a family event and came home to find NO ICE on Grand Traverse Bay north of Elmwood Twp Marina. Must have been one heck of a weekend. That s it for this month. See you all on St Patrick s Day.
Membership Committee Rob Lovell DUES ARE DUE By the time Uncle Homer gets this edition to bed, I'm guessing some of your dues are now past due. If you're pulling a Homer Simpson and saying "D'OH!", it might not be too late to get your dues in before the On Course Judge raises the red flag and tells you it's time to do your penalty turns. If your check is in the mail and on its way to the PO Box, (or if you sneak down to the Club this week) then the Treasurer will get your dues payment in time for her to report to me what a great yacht club member you've been! Since it takes a little time for our friends at the US Postal service to get the dues from your mailbox to ours, and then for our awesome treasurer to record them all in and report them to me, I tend to give a little slack before I tweak the internet and add the March Late Fee. So if you go online right now, (oh wait, you are online right now because you are reading Waterlines!) if you back up and log in to your member profile and pay your dues before I even know they're late. Remember, paying your dues online this year is different from every other year you've tried to pay them. Don t go over to the left side and click the Renew or Join button on the left. That will trigger a Tsunami warning in Hawaii and start you down a path that might generate a second dues invoice for you so you get to pay your dues twice. Since you have a balance due, when you log in, you should find a grey box under a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, (No it's not a new mark on the course). In the grey box it says "Pay Online". Click it and whip out the Visa or Mastercard and make it happen for another great year in the Grand Traverse Yacht Club! We'll be yachting soon! Editor s note: Uncle Homer is only in charge of the photo pages.
Membership Committee Rob Lovell Ahoy Sponsors! With 86 members in this year's application pool to join the Grand Traverse Yacht Club, it can be a challenge for the Membership Committee and your Board to get to know a quarter of them let alone all the great friends you have introduced to your Club. We've started a little earlier this year reviewing their applications, and with 86 now on the list, let's face it, they need your help, and we need your help too. To get elected to Associate membership, you need to get them down to the Club and get them involved. Not just for work days (that will get them bonus points) but also on Wednesday and Friday nights, especially before racing season starts, or I have to put Alexandria to bed. Invite them down and make sure they get introduced to Board Members, bartenders, Membership Committee Members, and the most important group in the Club, the Past Commodores. While you're at it, have them take a Selfie with one of the Commodores - a current Flag Officer, not one, oh how do I put this nicely, not an experienced one - (you thought I was going to say old didn't you). This helps us when we review their outstanding resumes so that we can put a face with a name, so you probably want to have them take the Selfie with the Commodores' phone. Remember though, your obligation to them as a sponsor doesn't stop there, it only starts. We want all our new members to be successful yacht club members that strive to make your yacht club a great family friendly place to be. To do that, they need your help to understand what it takes to be a great member in a successful yacht club. Let them know what is expected. Lead by example and let them know that you are supposed to bus your own table, pick up after your munchkins, and be nice to everyone. Remember as well, they can't buy alcohol in our Club until they are a member. All alcohol sales must go through your membership! It's the law and we really like having our liquor license. We look forward to seeing you at the Club with the friends you know will be great members.
Warrior Sailing Program Scott Ford Warrior Sailing is proud to announce that they are coming to Traverse City In 2018! GTYC Club member Scott Ford, a local Traverse City resident, and team member of Warrior Sailing is developing a regional Warrior and youth sailing team called Warrior Sailing Great Lakes. The launch party for Warrior Sailing Great Lakes will be held at the Workshop Brewery on March 20, 2018 from 6PM until close, all members are cordially invited to come out and celebrate with the Warriors. The team will be training in Northern Michigan waters starting May Throughout the Spring and Summer of 2018, the Warriors will be competing in the GTYC Wednesday night series as well as travel to compete in regional events throughout the Great Lakes. Keep up to date with Warrior Sailing at their website warriorsailing.org and all social media links. In partnership with the USMMA Sailing Foundation, Warrior Sailing Great Lakes will be utilizing a donated foundation racing sailboat. Great Lakes Sailing Company has also partnered with Warrior Sailing Great Lakes to provide dockage and support. The donated sailboat will be a platform for local sailors to join wounded, ill, or injured veterans to experience competitive sailing. The initiative will also host veteran sailing opportunities throughout the summer on Grand Traverse Bay. 100% of donated funds directly support Warrior Sailing programs and initiatives. Inquiries and donations can be directed to scotte@warriorsailing.org or call (231)
Building and Grounds Annie Floeter Building and Grounds During the first two months if 2018 the main room at GTYC was painted, vents and outlets were thoroughly cleaned, and chair rails were built and installed for both the main room and the commodore's room. Hardy thanks go to volunteers Chris Hagstrom, Bob Cornwell, and Jim Sorbie who worked with Dietrich Floeter for four days in the main room. Dietrich moved on to the commodore's room with Jay Moorhead and Phillip Speering where additional patching was required before paint or rails could be installed. Interlake racer, Jeff Bode, organized the patching and painting of the restroom hallway. He recruited volunteers Larry Thompson, Izzy Rodriguez, and her parents, Louie and Lisa. The children's room will be next with patching and painting in the plan. THE ANNUAL SPRING CLEAN UP DAY WILL BE SATURDAY, APRIL 21ST. While the club has several paid employees, the serious work of maintaining the building and grounds falls to GTYC members, year around. Plan to join the crew...it's a time of high energy and really high class company! Building and Grounds, Dietrich and Annie Floeter, Philip Speering, and Jay Moorhead
Sydney Harbor Sailing John Matthews A few photos from our Thursday evening race in Sydney, NSW Australia at Middle Harbour Yacht Club aboard expresso with skipper Philip Darling. It was a great sail in perfect conditions, and we placed 3rd despite having 10 crew aboard an X- Yachts X-362. Also visited the North Otago Yacht and Power Boat Club on Omaru, New Zealand
