1 ISSUE June 2017 Cultivating a Rich and Proud Legacy of Boating for Pleasure and Sport Waterlines Editor Angela Schuler In This Issue From the Helm Social Committee Thank You Fox Island Cruising Fleet Youth Sailing Seen and Heard Coming Events p1 p2 p3 p4 p4 p5 p6 p7 Submissions due by the 4 th Tuesday of the month prior to publication words or less please waterlines@gtyc.org From The Helm June The sailing/racing season has begun! It has been a great early turnout! I hope more of you join us soon. I m going to broach subject that I swore, as Commodore, I would not touch. It came up as a topic during member comments at the last board meeting. A topic that I think almost every past commodore has dealt with. The subject is volunteerism. GTYC has historically been able to keep membership dues at a very reasonable level because we are a volunteer club. Most of the labor of keeping our club intact is through volunteers. In this day and age, it seems that everyone is busier than they have ever been before. I m guilty as charged! A comment was made at the board meeting that more and more committee work is being taken on by board members. And that is true. But I don t feel that it is intentional. But simply due to lack of volunteers. I challenge the membership to prove me wrong. I want to encourage every member to find a way to give to our yacht club. Not just take. Find a way to volunteer and make our club your club. If there is a committee that may interest you, come to a board meeting and offer to help out. I m sure those committee leads would love your help. If there if a yacht club function, come on down early, or talk to Rich, Ian or Jed about how you can help out. If there is a regatta we are hosting, talk to JO or Bob Clark about serving on the race committee. If there are buildings and ground concerns or ideas, talk to Deitrick or Annie Floeter. Or simply come on down and tidy up the beach! Or just come on down! David Phelps Commodore 1
2 SOCIAL COMMITTEE Jed Mooney - Social Chair What s 49 3 long, 27 9 wide, weighs over 5,000 pounds, and sails over the water at speeds up to 45 knots? Answer: America s Cup Class full foiling catamarans! The 35th competition for the Auld Mug is upon us, and your Social Committee is working with Club Manager Ian Sterling and his staff to schedule opportunities for members to gather & watch the competitions starting Friday, May 26 with round-robin 1 of the Louis Vuitton Qualifiers series, and running all the way through the Challenger Playoffs semi-finals and finals to the actual America s Cup Match with up to 13 races in a first-to-seven wins series taking place between June The qualifier and playoffs series will be broadcast live on NBC Sports (NBCSN) and the AC35 app, with NBC National carrying live coverage of the America s Cup Match. Many of us remember the excitement of watching what some have called the biggest comeback in the history of sport back in 2013, when Oracle Team USA came from 7 points down to run the table against Emirates Team New Zealand and emerge victorious in AC34 on San Francisco Bay. There are some differences this time around, with perhaps the most significant being that the defender, Oracle Team USA, will participate in the qualifier rounds, giving them valuable testing against the competition, consisting of Great Britain s Land Rover BAR, Emirates Team New Zealand, Softbank Team Japan, Artemis Racing (Sweden), and Groupama Team France. The boats being sailed are also different from the 2013 edition. The AC 72s from 2013 have been downsized under the new event protocol to just under 50 in length, in order to rein in costs and encourage more challenger entries. Advancements in design and construction since the last Cup have also resulted in more controllable and balanced craft which are less likely to break apart catastrophically if a bow stuffs a wave or the boat capsizes yet the predicted top speeds for the smaller ACC boats will be right up there in the upper 40 kts. range of the old AC 72s. Sir Russell Coutts, CEO of the America s Cup Event Authority, estimates that the races will average about 22 minutes from start to finish. Another change is the venue, with the Louis Vuitton Qualifiers & Playoffs and the America s Cup match to be sailed on the British Territory of Bermuda s Great Sound, rather than on defender Oracle Team USA s home waters of San Francisco Bay. It remains to be seen if variables in winds and currents will be as challenging and interesting on the Great Sound as they were in the waters in the vicinity of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. No doubt the graphic overlays on the live TV coverage will have advanced technologically, and should be even more stunning and informative than in Keep an eye on your GTYC s regarding plans to open the bar and bring back the popular stadium seating round the bar viewing similar to what we enjoyed during AC34. Hopefully, we can also arrange for some live video updates from our own GTYC onthe-spot reporters, Past Commodore Jordan J.O. Owen and wife/past Commodorable Laura Brown, who will be traveling to Bermuda for the America s Cup. Maybe we ll do a Where s Waldo styled contest to see if we can spot them on screen during the festivities! More America s Cup info: Download the America s Cup App at 2
3 THANK YOU Michael Richmond Fellow Grand Traverse Yacht Club Members: It takes a village, it takes a community, it takes a club. The sailing community and the G.T.Y.C graciously came together Friday, May 12, to support A Dinner for Mike and my family in my battle with MULTIPLE MYELOMA, Bone Marrow Cancer. Many members and friends attended to show their support, wish us well, have a good time and even learn a little about some of the wonderful services the Cowell Family Cancer Center has to offer. The event was organized and masterminded by Liz Zimmerman. Liz orchestrated the details, the volunteers, and got the momentum to make this event a great success. Thank very much, Liz. Your leadership is greatly appreciated not only by me and my family, but by the entire G.T.Y.C Community. The event also could not have happened without the help of many more G.T.Y.C. volunteers. Leading this challenge was Darric Newman and Folgarelli s. Darric and the Folgarelli s team provided a scrumptious meal. Slow Roasted Prime Rib, Roasted Salmon and Chicken Saltimbocca were all elegantly and professional prepared by the talented Folgarelli s Culinary Team. Also, as usual, club Manager Ian Sterling stepped up and coordinated the volunteers, staff and all the behind the behind the scene work that no one notices until it s all forgotten. And, yes, the bartenders were very busy providing libations to attendees; after all it is a Yacht Club! Many more G.T.Y.C. members and friends also contributed in helping with all the jobs and tasks need to make A Dinner for Mike the success it was. An additional thank you goes out to Past Commodore Katie Harvath of the Cowell Family Cancer Center. Katie put together an enlightening presentation on some of the services offered to the community at the Cowell Family Center. The center is a true gem to the entire Traverse City and Northern Michigan region. Thank you, Katie, for providing this information to our Club and friends. Finally, thank you to all the G.T.Y.C. members and guests who attended A Dinner for Mike. My heart was so touched by all of your generosity, caring and your prayers. You have made me and my family feel very loved. The night would not be complete without a little wine going out. More than 56 bottles were donated and then won by Tom Roop in the Instant Cellar drawing. So if you re looking for some good wine, give him a shout. Thank you again, Grand Traverse Yacht Club and Friends, for making a Dinner for Mike a great success and a lot of fun. Happy boating, and I look forward to seeing you at the club this year and many more years to come. Michael Richmond 3

John Harbor is located near the western end of the Whalesback Channel and about 4 miles south of Bear Drop. The Great Lakes Cruising Guide provides the following description: John Harbor has long been a favorite of North Channel cruisers. It offers two deep water anchorages, open enough for good ventilation but well protected by surrounding islands. John is noted for blueberries in season. And there is a lovely sandy beach! Fly your GTYC burgee and a good time will be had by all! Contact Pete and Sue Stott or Fred and Lisa Wilmeth with any questions. 4
