1 The Tell Tale The Point Yacht Club Newsletter May 2013 Vol. 11, No. 5 Commodore s Log In this issue: Cheeseburger Race 2013 was the April event at Point Yacht Club. The start of the race saw favorable winds and all the participants reported a great day on the water. Fleet Captain Sykes presented the first place trophy to Eric Nelson on his new boat (so new in fact that it has not been named yet). Second place went to the Horner s on Hula Girl and the Blume crew took third place on Zig Zag. Congratulations to all the winners and to Fleet Captain Sykes for his direction of a successful Cheeseburger Race. The awards and party hosted by Jack and Veda Kelly was held at Josephine Park. Jack s famous Regatta Burgers were the main event along with all the usual trimmings. Jack and Veda, assisted by Dean and Sandy Gould and Jack s sister and brother in law Diane and Daryl Bunch served up a flawless event. Jack should enter the Best Cheeseburger in South Alabama contest when it comes around again. Thanks to the Kelly s and their crew for their hard work. Each board member accepted the task of calling a couple of the unpaid memberships in order for the directory to be printed. Vice Commodore Abercrombie reported on the 2013 Wounded American Veteran Event (W.A.V.E.) planned for August 10 and sponsored by several area yacht clubs. He also gave an update of a cruise to Opal Beach in conjunction with the Red Fish Point Raft- up scheduled for May 18. Fleet Captain reported on plans for Cheeseburger Race and gave an update on our donation to the Orange Beach Sailing Center. Social Committee Chairman Linda Kieffer reported that the name tags ordered by several members had arrived and she was in the process of delivering them. She provided an update on plans for the Cheeseburger Party. Rear Commodore Chapman reported that details had been worked out for member Matt Taylor to campaign the club s Flying Scott in GYA events. There was much discussion about plans to lease or purchase property for a clubhouse. Approval was given to develop a survey for all members to help determine what level of support the majority of members can provide as we move forward. The information obtained from the survey will be used as we develop the financial plan for the new facility and it is hoped a response from at least eighty percent of the membership can be obtained. A new member application was accepted from Rivers Brink and Judy McMillan along with William and Meredith Chastain were approved as new members. The final issue discussed at the April BOG meeting was the search for candidates to serve as Poker Run Chairman and Lost Bay Regatta Chairman. The next BOG meeting is scheduled for May 14. 1

2 The next planned event is The Red Fish Point Raft- up scheduled for May 18. This raft- up is similar to the Ingram Bayou event held each year. Both powerboats and sailboats show up prepared to stay overnight or return to port the same day. The day is spent socializing with the other members with everyone managing their own food and drinks. This year we are hoping several boats will use the raft- up on Saturday as the starting point for a cruise east with Opal Beach as one of the stops. Spring is a beautiful time in and around Perdido Bay and I hope to cross wakes with many of you as I enjoy the paradise we live in. 4 Social Committee Report Social Committee Sails On The club did it again! The Cheeseburger Party was a great success with members arriving by car and boat. The Josephine Roberts Bayou turned out to be a great venue and the food fabulous thanks to Jack, Veda, and their crew. Several Pensacola Yacht club members joined us too, they were having a raft-up in Roberts Bayou that weekend. Red Fish Point Raft-up - Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 18, the Red Fish Point Raft-up and cruise to the east follows. Dock Party - Remember to keep the weekend of June 11th free for our annual Dock Party, boat show and Blessing of the Fleet to be held at The Wharf. This promised to be a great event with Don and Connie Fuqua running the show. NAME TAGS: If you ordered a new nametag, I have them. Candee and I are planning a cruise in May. We welcome and encourage other boats to join us. The rough outline is to attend the Club raft-up at Red Fish Point on May 18th then continue on to the east with stops at Opel Beach in Navarre, Ft Walton Beach Yacht Club, Blue Water Bay Marina in Niceville and back, returning to Perdido Bay no later then Saturday 5/25. 5 Donation of Boats to Orange Beach Sailing Club Completed April 10, 2013 Paul Sykes wrote to Jeanne Fitzgibbons of the Orange Beach Recreation Department announcing the Board of Governor s decision to donate a Flying Scott and a Capri 14.2 to the Orange Beach Sailing Club. Point Yacht Club hopes we can work with the Orange Beach Sailing Club to campaign the Flying Scott in GYA regattas. 5

6 POINT YACHT CLUB Sailing Instructions for Steeplechase Format Races 1. RULES - The races will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. 2. ENTRIES - Competitors may enter by delivering a completed entry form and the entry fee to the Race Committee at the designated location at the appointed time on race day. 3. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS - Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board at the registration location by the Race Committee. 4. SCHEDULE - A Skipper s meeting will be held at 10:45 AM on the morning of the race. The race shall be a PHRF Bermuda start with the warning signal for the race at 11:55 AM. The scratch boat will start at 12:00 noon. 5. RACING AREA - The racing area will be in Arnica Bay and Perdido Bay as announced at the Skipper s meeting. 6. COURSE and MARKS- Unless modified by the Race Committee or in the Notice of Race, the course will be from a start/finish line in Arnica Bay eastward past ICW marker # 60, leaving marker # 60 to port, proceeding up Perdido Bay rounding marks placed by the Race Committee and returning to the start/finish line after leaving marker # 60 to starboard. 7. START and FINISH LINES - The start/finish line will be placed in Arnica Bay by the Race Committee as conditions dictate. 8. TIME LIMIT - The time limit for each race will be four (4) hours for the first boat to finish. 9. PROTESTS - Protests are not contemplated in this type of Club only racing format.
