1 Starboard Tack W E S T S H O R E S A I L C L U B September 2016 From the Commodore... Can you believe it's already September and Labor Day is next week. All I can say is that it went by too quickly. Our Wednesday night at the races had a difficult fall season with two out of three races canceled do to the weather and leaving only one completed. Three out of four races need to be completed for the fall series to be counted. Hopefully by the time you read this the fourth race will have been completed...leaving only one makeup race scheduled for September 7th to complete this year's series. August 22, 2015 was our Double Handed Race. A total of six boats raced their way down to Toledo Beach Marina. Thanks to race committee boat, Don & Sandy Baumgartner on Heather, for starting the race, and Lance & Christy Yee with PC Dale Brennan for taking times at the finish line at Toledo Beach. All seem to be having a good time. I hope all of you were able to enjoy the cruises or races or even both this year. With the summer slowly coming to an end there are still a few more races and cruises including the Jack and Jill Race, the Peg Spriggs Ladies Day Race, our Harvest Moon Cruise to Monroe Boat Club and don't forget Fall Fest in October. Also September 17 th WNATR buoy pull day. It's the time of year where we begin looking for people who are willing to make all this happen. Someone who is interested in running for rear commodore or any of the chairs: membership, secretary, treasurer and activity chair. Please consider getting involved and keeping the traditions of West Shore Sail Club thriving. It s not difficult and none of it is overwhelming. There's plenty of help as most of the membership has served in the past. 2 Page 2 Starboard Tack From the Vice Commodore... Can you believe that it is September already? By mid-month we will already be pulling the WNATR course buoys (currently scheduled for September 17 th so plan on helping; an will be sent in the next couple of weeks) and the membership will likely start thinking of pulling boats for the season. However, before that happens, we still have a couple of races and social events where you should participate. We have two more Fall series races to complete including a make-up race on September 7 th. We also have two specialty races as well. On Sunday, September 4 th we have the annual Jack and Jill Race which is followed by one of our best social events, the always popular Corn Roast. And the next Sunday, September 11 th, we have the annual Ladies Day Peg Spriggs Memorial race. I hope that everyone plans to make these races and the parties that follow. They are great fun and wonderful chance to socialize with the membership. You can find more information on either Notice of Race or the WSSC website or you can contact me! With September ahead, I did wanted to recognize how well our members did in some of the racing that transpired in August. Along with WNATR, our membership was busy on the weekends participating in multiple regattas and races. The month started with lots of racing at the I-LYA Bayweek in Put-In-Bay. Our membership was well represented with boats and crew and performed very well; with several class flag winners. The participant Skippers were Commodore Bryce Boardman, Richard and Kelly Bohl, Matt and Sue Dubois, Todd and Patty Duffett, Alan and Joyce Techmire, and Brenda Woodruff and John Perry. And the crews were made up with many from our membership as well. At the FYC Regatta, WSSC had 13 boat entries and congratulations go out to all those skippers and crew that flagged or took trophies the winning skippers at this regatta were Commodore Bryce Boardman, Brenda Woodruff, Jim Brayan, Matt Dubois, Rick Bohl, and P/C Dick Synowiec. Following the FYC regatta, the first Lighting Sailboat Regatta was held. The regatta included entries from 6 WSSC members as well as the RC and support duties provided by our membership. During the regatta, one of the boats capsized and crewman Roy Salisbury, despite the efforts of rescue personnel, did not survive. Roy was a dedicated WNATR crew member that sailed with Mike Reed for decades. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Roy s family and friends. At the WSSC Doublehanded Race, we had 6 entries; 2 Cruising and 4 Jam. We did not have any Spinnaker boats this year but the wind and seas made for a really good and fun race. Congrats to PC Dick Shackelford and Commodore Bryce Boardman for their class wins and to PC Chuck Laskey and Tim Steffeke for 2nds, Tim Lozon for his 3 rd and to Joe Kubera. The afterglow was held during big storm at the Sand Bar which did not dampen anyone s fun. We had over 23 members attend as several boats other than the racers also joined the fun. Thank you so much to FC Don & Sandy Baumgartner for being the RC at the start and to PC Dale Brennon and Lance & Christy Yee being the finish RC. A special thanks to Sharon Boardman for all her help on this event and it was really great fun and thanks to all those that participated. Also at the General membership meeting, we still have Lighthouse Challenge and WSSC shirt available for sale and they will be for sale until they are gone so if you get tired of hearing me try to sell these, just buy a few! The Lighthouse Challenge or the WSSC Burgee shirts do not have a year listed so they can be worn for years without regret. If you want one, you can get them at the membership meetings or give me a call and I will get one to you. As a reminder: Key Racing dates to mark your calendar: Jack & Jill Race September 4, 2016; Ladies Day Race - Peg Spriggs Memorial September 11, 2016; WSSC Awards Night October 21, Visit our racing tab on our Website for the race documentation and access to several important web links. I hope to see you at the September membership meeting! David Monk
3 September 2016 Page 3 From the Rear Commodore... Oh my Gosh The last thing I remember is launching my boat, and calling a mechanic. The rest of the summer is just a blur. Dave Monk and I represented WSSC in the Lightning Invitational at FYC, as part of their Regatta, and I am saddened by the accident on one of the FYC boats, but also proud to have participated in this event. Boats from Ford Yacht Club, North Cape Yacht Club, Crescent Sail Yacht Club, Pontiac Yacht Club, Saginaw Bay Yacht Club and WSSC raced, and I can say it was a little intense last Sunday. We did have a lot of Good Lightning sailors together for the day. I also want to thank Commodore Bryce Boardman for being the Committee Boat. I also look forward to working with FYC again next year on this race. I did ask P/C Chuck Laskey if he would be a guest speaker and discuss preventative maintenance of our boat engines. I hope that I could learn a few things, that will help me get my boat fixed, and allow me to go for at least one sail, or the last of our cruises to Monroe Boat Club, or go out for one last WNATR before the season is over. I feel like a junkie that can t get my sailing fix. Chuck, unfortunately, will be undergoing a medical procedure on Thursday and may not be able to attend the General Membership Meeting. Unfortunately for us, I thought it would be a great topic from someone I consider an expert at those things. But we hope things go well for Chuck at the doctors. We can use the time to socialize. I also wanted to express my condolences to the family of Roy Salisbury, who passed away as the result of the accident at the Lightning Invitational. I don t recall Roy being a member of WSSC, but he crewed for Mike Reed (FYC) during the WNATR for more years than we realize, so I suspect he had a lot of friends at West Shore Sail Club. As his wife mentioned, he died doing what he loved doing. I hope everyone had a good summer of sailing. Ed Sakowicz After the Double-Handed Race: A good time was had by all...

For many years, Dick Synowiec was the sole representative from our area, and I joined about seven years ago. One of the requirements to be a voting member of PHRF-LE is that you have to be an active racer. Kathy and my plans are to do extensive cruising on the Great Lakes, which will preclude me doing very much racing, if any. I am reaching out to the membership for a replacement. There are about seven monthly meetings during the winter on Sundays, usually in the Cleveland area (lately in Westlake, Ohio) starting at 10:30 am (we usually leave Grosse Ile at 7:45 am). We had a candidate, but he has issues with Sunday meetings. To become a handicapper, you must attend at least 4 meetings. Our next meeting is May 21 st in Perrysburg, Ohio. There will probably be meetings in September, October, November and December.
