1 S S H S L L From The Commodore... Commodore Newsletter article for November 2018 David Monk First and foremost, this month s General Membership Meeting is being hosted at a location other than our beloved Mr Nick s in Trenton. We have been informed that Mr Nick s is doing some renovations this month in its banquet facility and thus we needed to move this month s (and maybe next month s) meeting. Monroe Boat Club (7932 N Harbor Dr, Monroe, MI (734) ) has graciously offered us the use of their back room for our November Membership Meeting. On top of that, it is also their Thursday night Burger Night so everyone can take advantage of that as well. The timing for dinner and the meeting remain the same with our Burger Night starting between 6-6:30 pm with our meeting starting at 7:30 pm. This meeting is also our annual elections for Flag Officers and Committee positions so please try to make this car cruise and meeting. Election nominations are open until the voting starts so you still have time to throw your name into the hat for the position you want next year. Although I missed out on the WSSC Awards night this year, I was told that VC Lance and RC Tim did an outstanding job even without the official awards. The pictures show that everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and many of our friends took home flags and trophy s the official flags are now being delivered. Congratulations to everyone that raced, crewed, or supported this year s racing and we look forward to seeing you next year and remember to turn in your entries for WSSC Boat of Year which is awarded at the 2019 Commodore s Ball in April. As the weather starts to turn colder, I want to thank the membership for making this year s season so wonderful for the racing, cruising, and socializing we all do. But the fun is not over yet. 3 November 2018 Page 3 From the Vice Commodore... The Racing Season has almost come to a close, as Awards Night has come and gone. It was not as smooth as I was hoping, since the flags I had ordered a month prior did not make it to my house until the Monday after the Awards Presentation. I thought I had everything worked out with Seaborn Flags; however when I did not see a box on my porch after work Thursday, I knew something had happened. What to do? After some thinking, I decided to do some Arts & Crafts and make some flags from poster board. I was nervous about not getting the flags in time, after all I had one big job that night and I did not get it done. I gave my speech and explained the situation and started giving out the flags. To my relief everyone took it all in stride and had a good laugh and a great time. The flags did arrive on Monday and with a little help from Sam, our current guest dog (see picture), are all sorted! Todd Duffett has Grosse Ile Yacht Club Members flags/trophies, WSSC and Ford Yacht Club flags/trophies will be available at the General Membership Meeting on November 1st (At Monroe Boat Club) and Ford Yacht Club on Saturday, November 3. I will USPS any remaining Flags after these two events. Since the pictures from the event do not include what event the flag was for, I have included the winners at the end of this article. I would like to thank the 2018 Race Committee: David Monk, Tim Lozon, Chris McCardell, Steve Semenick, Dick Synowiec, Doug Howe, Bryce Boardman, Matt Dubois, and Todd Duffett for a smooth racing season. A special Thank You to Chris for taking care of Wednesday Night At The Races. I could not imagine the Vice Commodore s job without your leadership and dedication. Also, Thank You to Tim Steffke for obtaining and skippering the boat for Buoy Launch and Pull; All WNATR & Specialty Race Committee Boats & Crews; Everyone who helped repair, set, and/or retrieve the Buoys; Grosse Ile Yacht Club & Ford Yacht Club for hosting the WNATR Afterglows; and Everyone who helped organize, setup, and/or cleanup for the Specialty Races & Afterglows! Just a few more things before the 2018 Racing Season is completely finished. Boat of the Year Submission Forms for Race Year 2018 are due to me by January 31st. Forms are available at: westshoresailclub.org/wssc-race-applications. The final Racing Committee meeting will be in December, look for details in an upcoming . 7 Starboard Tack Page 7 From the Rear Commodore... R.I.P 2018 Sailing There is no need to harp on the fact that this season has come and gone too quickly. We are all painfully aware of this fact. It seems like each passing year goes more quickly than the last. Looking outside at the wet and dreary sky is proof enough to make it official- Sailing is over for the year. But alas, one boat is still in the water anxiously awaiting one last voyage. I keep hearing tales of my late uncle Walt s December sails with snow and ice onboard the Minx and am thinking that I might have to give that a try. (actually, November will have to suffice as December is just too cold and dicey for this guy!) Or as my wife would have it, our last outing might look more like a winterizing, dropping of the mast, type affair. So what do we do as Michigan Sailors in the off season? Fortunately, we have the WSSC to keep us busy and in the like mind. We have many positions to fill for next year but I am certain that someone will step up to the plate and volunteer their time. The rewards are many and your efforts will certainly be appreciated by the club. The car cruises in the off season to other clubs are especially fun to me and a good chance to keep in the yachting spirit. Cruising Committee Meeting- mark your calendars for our next meeting... Sunday, November 4, 1300hrs. Continuing the tradition, Leonard Garbacz has graciously offered his home (1148 Otter Ave., Waterford, MI... overlooking Otter Lake) as venue for this event, and will anchor the traditional pre-meeting luncheon with his famous chili recipe. Please bring a dish to complement Leonard's chili and your choice of grog to wash it all down. To book your seat at the table, call Hope to see you there. Thank you to all for a great sailing season with the WSSC this year, and let s hope that time moves just as quickly this winter as it did in the summer. Kind of early to say it but Think Spring!.

11 Starboard Tack Page 11 Thank you to Don and Peggy as Fleet Captains of Monroe Harvest Moon Cruise on September 29 and boats sailed down New to the Starboard Tack is an Autobiography Section! Every month we will feature a different member. This month is: John Samuelson How I got into sailing!! As a youngster, my dad & I used to go to Belle Isle all the time to paddle a canoe or peddle around the island. We would always see these sailboats out on the river and I was just amazed that they could go into the wind and even as a child, I thought they were so graceful and beautiful. As a young adult, I found out about sailing classes available through the American Youth Hostels (AYH). So I signed up for the beginning class which consisted of several classroom sessions and then moved to Kent Lake in Kensington Metro Park. WOW finally on a boat on the water and found they really can't sail into the wind. But the thrill of sailing really kicked in. The AYH had a great program consisting of beginning classes on Interlake s on Kent Lake. Once you mastered the skills of man-overboard, jibing and tacking, and docking, all without an engine, you were allowed to take the 18 ft Interlake s out without an instructor along. The next step was aboard a 26 Pearson on Lake St. Claire, where classes were basically the same skills but with a much larger and heavier boat and the use of an engine. The big plus for that program was that, once you had passed the class, you could charter one of the boats for up to two consecutive 8 hour periods. By that time I got my wife Joan involved and we were able to double our chartering times to actually spend a weekend on a boat in Lake St Claire. After spending several summer weekends aboard the little Pearsons, we started looking for a boat to buy and found a 1972 Catalina 27 which was only 8 years old. We sailed that until 1986 when we sold the Catalina and purchased the 1982 O day we still own to this day.

15 November 2018 Page 15 Border Crossing Information: Updated, 1/2018 The best way to return to the US is to obtain either an I-68 or Nexus card for everyone on the boat. The captain is to report in at in the Detroit Area (Monroe to south of Selfridge). If you have BR numbers, the report in interview is normally very short and easy. The cost of an I-68 is $16 per year per person, with a maximum of $32 for a family. Children are included on their parent s I-68. It is only good for one season. You can fill out the forms and obtain the I-68 at the bridge or tunnel. Request your BR number at the same time. This is the letters BR followed by seven digits such as BR A Nexus card is $50 for 5 years ($10 per year). One should enroll online. You will have to report to get the card. You can do this at the Ambassador Bridge or the Tunnel. We reported to the Border Patrol station at the Ambassador Bridge. As you approach the Bridge, shortly after turning to the east there is a gate on the left (prior to paying the toll). Go through the gate (you may have to tell an officer at the gate your purpose) to the offices. Obtain your boater number (BR#) when you pick up your Nexus card(s). When we renewed our Nexus cards at the Bridge, the U. S. officers that could help with the BR number were at the same desk as the Nexus (Canadian) Officers, just on the right side of the counter. For more on Nexus go to: trusted-traveler-programs/nexus. Once you have the Nexus card, you can enroll in the GOES program online. This allows using the TSA precheck line at U.S. airports (and is the least expensive way to get this). If your boat 30 feet long or more payment of the user fee is required. You can obtain a DTOPS (Decal / Transponder Online Procurement System) number for $27.50 per calendar year. Information on this is at: The main change is that as of December, the cost of the Customs Decal {users fee} (for boats 30 feet or longer) is increased to $28.24 (from $25). You must have this decal if your boat is 30 feet or more in length. You can obtain it at under the Private Vessel block. If you wish to use the online float plan, you will need a SVRS number. This is the letters BR followed by 9 digits for example BR More information is available on SVRS at Default.aspx. Note, these are not the same as the BR number for calling in.
