P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Hello Friends, Hope you are all enjoying the very tropical warm beautiful summer so far with sunny skies and breezes. I want to wholeheartedly extend a big THANK YOU to those members and friends who volunteered to help set up, clean up, and bring delicious side dishes and desserts to the 4 th of July celebration. We served approximately 125 people throughout the evening. Many stayed to watch the fireworks following a dazzling sunset. I would like to remind everyone that Ann is running the Del Mar Marina Summer Race Series every Wednesday evening through August. Check-in is at 5 PM, with racing beginning at 5:30 until either the wind dies or sunset. Capri s rent for $10, Expos rent for $5. There are 16 boats available for racing (8 of each size). Last Wednesday we had only 6 boats total on the water, so please come out and support the marina and have fun racing and hanging out afterward to enjoy the sunsets. We are all looking forward to the Small Boat Race # 6 and Social on Saturday, August 12 th. US Sail and Power Squadron of San Luis Rey had a Raft-up August 4, 5, and 6. On Saturday they hosted a nice BBQ with games and raffles. All had a good time at Del Mar Marina. The General Meeting with Nominations is on Saturday, August 19 th, followed by a Southern Style BBQ and Potluck. We are looking to fill a few positions in the Board of Governors. We also will be needing volunteers for a few of the Standing and Ad Hoc committee chairs. Please let us know if you have any interest. Yokwe and Stay Safe. Commodore, Susan Rodriguez Please come out and enjoy the fun and festivities. See you all on the docks and join us on the sunny clubhouse patio. July 4th Celebration

P A G E 3 Staff Commodore Luncheon at Jolly Roger s on July 30th. News from IOBGA Our event held on July 8th at MBYC was a success. Almost $500 was raised for Elder-Help. I hope some of you came and enjoyed the music, food and fun. Again, thanks for your donations of either cash or unused or unloved jewelry that we resell for other people to enjoy. Our next event will be September 23rd at PLYC. IOBG will be racing their boats for Elder-Help, prizes, food and drink. IOBGA will be there, ready to sell our jewelry ($1, $2,$5 and $10 and some special items at $20). Secretary Marybeth Thayer and I hope to welcome many of you. More detail will be in our September Anchorline. We are always interested in taking donations of your unwanted jewelry. We will be at the SMYC General Membership Meeting on August 19th. Elder-Help and the IOBGA (SC SPOUSES) thank you. Fair winds, Audrey Hall Our volunteers are still working for us in Sacramento. RBOC supported: Blue Light Safety Bill which passed Senate Committee. AB78 would expand use of a distinctive blue light on public safety vessels to include vessels owned by fire departments or fire protection districts whenever the vessel may be engaged in law enforcement activities. The measure next proceeds to the Senate Committee on Appropriations Please check the web site for more details. Your donations help the volunteers to continue the great work they do for all boaters. Thanks till next time, SC Gary Hall US SAIL So far this year with the help of members US SAIL has developed a solid group of sailing instructors and race officials. And they continue to work towards growing the sport of sailing. They want to continue their work with all their members. Every dollar of your membership goes to the initiatives that grow and enhance the sport of sailing. They would love to continue to have you aboard their team. Please check out their web site and remember the racing rules come from them too. Thanks till next time, SC Gary Hall

P A G E 4 Safety and Education Coast Guard Auxiliary Discusses How to Be A "Good Mate By: Ed Sweeney, National Press Corps (Pacific Region) During spring and summer a sailor's thoughts turn to boating. Tens of thousands of power boaters and sail enthusiasts are preparing their vessel for the boating season. Whether you store your vessel on the water or in your backyard, this article will help you be a "Good Mate" and keep the marine environment "clean and green." WHAT ABOUT VESSEL MAINTENANCE POLLUTION? Vessel maintenance and repair activities will be taking place virtually all around us. Activities include surface cleaning, sanding, washing, waxing, scrapping, painting, as well as replacing hardware on the boat, lines, cleats, etc. Moreover, many people change their oil in anticipation of the season, and dispose of batteries, antifreeze, and other toxic materials. Cleaning products used to get boats ready for the season include soaps, solvents, cleaners, waxes, teak cleaners, and fiberglass, wood, and chrome polishers. A number of these products contain ammonia, phosphates, chlorine, hydrocarbon products, and otherwise harmful ingredients that are hazardous to humans as well as the aquatic environment. CLEAN WATER - IT'S THE LAW The Clean Water Act prohibits the discharge of harmful quantities of pollutants into the waters of the United States. Many states, including California, have additional regulations, often more stringent than the Clean Water Act. As in many cases, ignorance of the law is not an excuse! There are often severe criminal and civil penalties that may be imposed for violation of these federal and state laws. WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL ANYWAY? Many of the items used to clean your boat from all the grime can be quite toxic and harmful to numerous types of marine life. Some examples include hull sandings; they can increase the particulate matter in the water column, reducing the light penetrating the water, and thus reducing the water quality. Moreover, cleaners and detergents can add nutrients to the local waters, degrading water quality, promoting algae growth, and causing an algal bloom. This reduces the oxygen in the water, which can result in a massive fish kill, which may impact the entire food chain adversely.

P a g e 5 WHAT'S A SKIPPER TO DO? Here are some of the things that boaters can do to be kind to the environment: Avoid using products that contain chlorine, phosphates, ammonia, hydrocarbons, or any other product labeled hazardous to humans. If a product is hazardous to you, chances are its hazardous to the aquatic environment as well. Rinse your boat with clean, fresh water after each use. This stops organism growth, extends the life of the protective paint, and reduces the need for heavy-duty cleaners. Use more "elbow grease," not more product. Use only the amount of cleaning product you need, and be sure to clean up any spills with a rag and dispose of the rag properly. Conduct all sanding and scraping operation while the boat is in the boat yard. If you must sand while the boat is in the water, use a vacuum sander to ensure debris doesn't get into the water, and use drop cloths to prevent paint chips from contaminating the aquatic environment. Try using hull paints containing Teflon, silicon, or cayenne pepper rather than toxic metals, like copper and tin. If you must paint the boat's topside while the boat is in the water, make sure you have a tarp to catch any spills. Be sure to dispose of oil and batteries properly. If your marina doesn't have a hazardous material receptacle, encourage them to get one. Dispose flares in a flameproof container, or transported to the local fire department for proper disposal. Encourage your marina or marine dealer to stock environmentally friendly products. Boaters are only part of the Marine Partnership necessary to ensure a healthy aquatic environment. Marinas also play an important role in keeping the waters "clean and green." Make sure storm drains located near work areas in the bat are covered to prevent toxic materials from entering the waterway. Provide clearly marked bins for hazardous waste and otherwise dangerous products. Stock environmentally friendly products for sale to your customers. Post environmentally friendly cleaning tips at the marina, or include a flyer with cleaning product purchases. PRACTICE THE THREE "R's" We're not talking reading, 'riting, and rithmetic, nor are we talking about another three R's that many mariners are familiar with; red right - returning. Here we're talking about REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. The gist of this article in how to prevent/mitigate vessel maintenance pollution is on the first R reduce the use of toxic products whenever possible, and use fewer products, and more elbow grease! As you can see, the introduction of man and his sea faring vessels into our lakes, rivers, bays and oceans can profoundly impact the marine environment. But with a little common sense and the knowledge gained from above, we can all have clean waterways to boat, fish, swim, and maintain a healthy aquatic environment.

Seven vessels rallied at the buoy and cruised off-shore of Oceanside enjoying the 10knot winds. Skippers and crew returned to the festively decorated clubhouse around 6p.m, connecting with other members and enjoying a Polynesian themed potluck meal. A raffle was held. Congratulations to all the raffle winners, especially Pat and Sue Ayers who won the drawing for the 50/50. Following the meal the deck was transformed into an open-air theatre where members enjoyed viewing Disney s Moana while munching on fresh popped popcorn served by Commodore Susan. Our mid-summer event was very pleasurable for those who attended. Thank you to everyone who helped to make the entire day a fun gathering.
