P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Dear members and friends, Well, the end of summer is almost here and the club has certainly been busy with races, meetings and trying to work around the marina classes. I attended the IOBG (International Order of the Blue Gavel) meeting in Niagara Falls this past week. Many new opportunities are available for the yacht clubs and funds for projects. I will be attending the Commodores Cruise the end of October at Catalina Island Yacht Club, as well as the Annual IOBG meeting at Marina Del Rey. SMYC is looking forward to the SGYC visit over Labor Day Weekend. So members, come down, eat and say hello. Thank you to Sue Rodriguez and bridge for taking charge of the recent semi annual membership meeting in my absence. It is getting close to the end of the year. So mark the date of December 2 for our Christmas Party and try to volunteer for positions open in our club s standing committees. Commodore Linda Loftis IOBGA We are getting ready for our change of watch on Friday, October 14 th. On that date we will have our final event and hope to bring in over $500 for Elder Help Of San Diego. SMYC has been a big help by contributing unused and unwanted jewelry to make this event the fun it has been. Many of our members have attended the events and enjoyed all the things our district 15 s clubs have in common. I will have more details later and will post them on the web and in October s newsletter. To understand what Elder Help is all about please check their web site elderhelp of san diego.org. 3 P A G E 3 Safety and Education Coast Guard Auxiliary Warns: Don't Be the Victim of the "Silent Killer" Carbon Monoxide (CO) can be a "silent killer" on recreational vessels. Each year, boaters are injured or killed by preventable carbon monoxide poisoning. Boaters have been poisoned by carbon monoxide in situations such as while setting fishing lines or performing maintenance on their boats while the engine was running. Carbon monoxide is produced by gasoline, propane, charcoal or wood. On boats some common sources of carbon monoxide include engines, generators, cooking ranges, space heaters, and water heaters. Carbon monoxide can collect within a boat in a variety of ways. Exhaust leaks (the leading cause of death by carbon monoxide) can allow carbon monoxide to migrate throughout the boat and into enclosed areas. Even properly vented exhaust can re-enter a boat if it's moored too close to a dock or another boat, or if the exhaust is pushed back by prevailing winds. Exhaust can re-enter boats when cruising under certain conditions the station wagon effect especially with canvas in place. Exhaust can also collect in enclosed spaces near the stern swim platform. There are many ways to protect your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide. Several of the different precautions a boater can take are listed below: Use a Marine Carbon Monoxide Detector These detectors work much like smoke alarms in houses. They sense a moderate level of carbon monoxide present on the vessel and emit a loud siren noise to alert the occupants of the danger. Ensure Proper Ventilation Open foredeck hatches and a window in the cabin to allow fresh air to travel through the vessel. Also, be aware that carbon monoxide can collect under a canopy. Inspect Exhaust System Regularly - Look and listen for leaks in the exhaust system. Check each joint for discoloration, water leaks, carbon build-up or stains. Make sure all ventilation systems are in good repair and are not obstructed, restricted, or punctured. Seal gaps around engine room and exhaust system doors, hatches, and access panels. Avoid the Transom The transom is where carbon monoxide collects. Stay away from the transom while the vessel is idling or underway. Educate Children Instruct your children about the danger and presence of carbon monoxide on vessels. Avoid Other Idling Vessels Idling vessels are a very prominent source for high concentrations of carbon monoxide. Symptoms of CO poisoning may include severe headache, dizziness, confusion, nausea, fainting, and death. Low levels can cause shortness of breath, mild nausea, and a mild headache. Low levels are more dangerous in the boating environment because they can lead to drowning. Carbon-monoxide poisoning may not be suspected immediately because the symptoms are similar to those of people with the flu, food poisoning, or other illnesses. If you suspect CO poisoning, immediately get the victim to fresh air and seek medical care. Recognizing the dangers of CO poisoning some states, such as California, now require warning labels. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary says "a successful boating outing begins when you leave home and ends when you safely return home."

P A G E 5 Semi-Annual Membership Meeting August 20th, 2016 The General Meeting with Nominations was successful with over 50 members attending the meeting and the dinner that followed on the patio. The food was delicious. A big thank you to all members that brought such delicious food to share and the volunteers that came early to set up and those who stayed late for cleanup. Several members offered nominations for the coming 2017 Bridge and Board of Directors. Those names and positions will be posted on our website at least thirty days before the October General Meeting with Elections. Stay tuned. Many thanks to those volunteering their time and energy for next year. Vice Commodore Susan Rodriguez US SAIL The 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition was really exciting to watch. The USA has not medaled in a very long time. This year we had a great team. Caleb Paine from San Diego brought home a bronze medal. Even if there were no more medal winners, all the participants were winners. Considering all the competition in Rio, they did very well. They were so excited that they are ready to try in 2020.The Paralympics are scheduled for September 7th to the 18th. There will be canoeing and rowing this year. The sailing events start on September 12th. There will be single, two and three sailing with mixed couples, competing together in the same regatta. The sailing became part of the Olympic in Sidney For all the exciting news and times please check the sail magazine or their web site for all the details. Hope you can watch. Till next time, SC Gary Hall

The Del Mar boat basin didn t have much traffic, which was quite unusual for an August Saturday. There were five competitive boats. And we had some of our season s best racers to date. The skippers and crews were very proficient in getting to the start line for good starts. The number of mishaps and fouls occurring during the races has greatly diminished. I believe all of the racers have improved their boat handling, race strategies, and comprehension for race rules. As a practical matter, if the race rules are not violated the race committee has an easier job running the races. At the end of our race day there was relaxed conversation as we mingled at dockside. Hopefully, the club members, racers, race committee and their families had a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon. I did leave the marina thinking that it was a very enjoyable afternoon for me. Here are the results: 1. Jess/Kahualani 8 2. Sue/Brianna Gary/Donna Patrick/Kevin Bob/Sherry 25 Joe Palmiotti, Race Committee Attention all Racers: The Race Committee would very much appreciate if racers would give advance notice of their intention to participate in any particular race to help make preparations for the races go more smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation! Joe Palmiotti

Pat and Sue Ayres visit to England P A G E 8 Sue and I recently returned from a trip to Europe. We stayed in London for a week taking in the sights. I have wanted to tour Greenwich, the Royal Observatory, and the Royal Maritime Museum ever since Harvey Royer taught me how to take a Noon Sighting, one of the few celestial shots that generate both Latitude and Longitude. The Royal Observatory is the home of the Prime Meridian and John Harrison s seagoing clocks (Chronometers) that finally made Longitude navigation possible in the 1700s. The boat ride down the Thames from Westminster was like traveling through time. It got me wondering about early navigators. What a history lesson the Royal Observatory provided. It turns out that by 150 AD, Ptolemy had plotted Latitude and Longitude on numerous charts. All Latitude was north of the equator because he said that anyone living in the south would Melt into deformity from the heat. Another reason early latitude was 0 to 90 north is that it was relatively simple. Length of day is proportional to Latitude as is the height of the sun at noon. Because the sun passes directly over at the equator during equinox and passes directly over the tropic of cancer (23.44 N) on the summer solstice, tables showing where the sun was at noon every day of the year allowed navigators to plot their latitude relative to the sun s. Also, in the northern hemisphere, the North Star sits above the pole so that if it is straight up, you are at the North Pole and if it is on the horizon you are at the equator. Everything in-between was fairly simple the angle from the horizon to the North Star is your Latitude. So Ptolemy s Latitude was fixed by the laws of nature and any sailor worth his salt could generate it with length of day, height of the sun at noon, or the North Star s relationship to the horizon. So, all of his maps showed Latitude from the equator to the North Pole as ours do today but, his Longitude was arbitrary. Free to put 0 Longitude anywhere he wanted, Ptolemy chose the Canary Islands. Over the centuries it has been at the Azores, as well as Rome, Copenhagen, St. Petersburg, Pisa, Paris, and Philadelphia, always depending on the dominate naval force, finally settling at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. By the way, you might ask why Longitude is measured 0 to 180 and not in 90 increments like Latitude. Well, after Columbus s return from the Americas, a jurisdictional dispute between the big dogs of the day, Portugal and Spain, over the new lands, was solved by Pope Alexander VI s Bull of Demarcation. He decreed all lands west of 100 leagues west of the Azores belonged to Spain, and all to the east to Portugal. Spain got 180 and Portugal got the other 180. Ergo 180 west and 180 east. Because of all this, Da Gama, Drake, Balboa, Magellan and the like, while always knowing their latitude were pretty much clueless about their Longitude at sea, and were damn lucky to get to the places that made them famous. Even Columbus sailed only what he knew, the Latitude of the Indies and he would have gotten there if America had not been in the way. It s said that Magellan cleared many a bar when Ship Captains were jockeying for bragging rights for their most accurate latitudes by simply saying Oh yea, what was your Longitude smart ass? (or something close to that). Most just cowered and snuck out the alley door. This all came to a head in October 1707 when Sir Admiral Shovell s British fleet of 4 warships with 2,000 men ran aground south of England sinking all four and killing all but two of the crew. Interesting side story.two days prior, a seaman was impertinent enough to suggest to the Admiral that his Longitude estimation was dangerously off. He was summarily hung for mutiny (just like I do in my classroom). Turns out, the Admiral was one of the two survivors. When found almost dead, on the beach on the Scilly Islands, an old woman liked his ring and killed him for it. Unfortunately Shovell went to his maker without anyone to say I told you so!

P A G E 9 Continued from page 4 This all spurred the British Longitude Act of 1714 which promised a fortune to anyone who could solve Longitude navigation. Since all the large forehead guys of the day solved Latitude with celestial observation, all thought the same could be done with Longitude. Galileo, Cassini, Newton, and Halley to name a few, all went this direction which was all but impossible. One lone amateur clock maker, John Harrison, realized that the earth turns 360 in exactly 24 hours, or 15 per hour (time zones), or 1 every 4 minutes. By knowing what time it is in Greenwich when the sun at your position is at its highest (local noon), that time difference can yield Longitude. Whoooa that s too simple! Well, for example, on July 27 th, just off the coast, my celestial noon (highest sun) occurred at 19:50 GMT. That s 470 minutes after noon GMT. Dividing 470 minutes by 4 (minutes per degree) gives or west, my actual Longitude. Seems easy. Harvey used to do it all on the back of a match book. But, not so fast. Clocks didn t work well on boats then. Clocks of the day were very susceptible to temperature, humidity, needed frequent lubrication, and pendulums didn t work on a rolling sea. It took Harrison most of his life to build Chronometers that could, with accuracy, keep time during long voyages. Over his lifetime, he made five in all. Four are on display in the Royal Observatory, three of which are still working. The first is the size of a file cabinet with self lubricating wooden gears and the fourth is the size of a baseball (cricket ball for the Brits out there) and was the first to be jeweled, approaching zero friction. All are absolutely fascinating. I also got to see the latest in clocks.an Ion Trap clock that makes the Cesium clocks in our GPS satellites look like pansies! It loses one second every BILLION years. Even Harrison would be impressed since all modern navigation like GPS is still based on clocks! In the picture I m standing on the famous 0 Longitude (Prime) meridian, one arm in the western hemisphere and one in the eastern. I wanted to stay till midnight and do it again so one arm could be in tomorrow and one in today or as you half empty glass folks would say, one arm in today and one in yesterday. But, Sue said if we spent the next five hours in the Pub down the hill, I wouldn t be able to walk back up there. Smart Women! So, just imagine its midnight under a really full moon on the one day of the year it wasn t overcast in London!
