P A G E 2 Flag Day in the United States, June 14th People across the United States celebrate Flag Day on June 14 each year to honor the United States flag and to commemorate the flag s adoption. On the same day, the United States Army celebrates its birthday. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress replaced the British symbol of the Grand Union flag with a new design featuring 13 white stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 red and white stripes one for each state. Although it is not certain, this flag may have been made by the Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, who was an official flag maker for the Pennsylvania Navy. The number of stars increased as the new states entered the Union on, but the number of stripes stopped at 15 and was later returned to 13. Many people in the United States honor this day by displaying the American flag at homes and public buildings. Other popular ways of observing this holiday include: flagraising ceremonies; Flag Day services; school quizzes and essay competitions about the American flag; musical salutes; street parades; and awards for special recognition. Although Flag Day is a nationwide observance, it is not a public holiday in many parts of the United States. It is a legal holiday in a few areas in the USA, such as Montour County in Pennsylvania. In June 1886 Bernard Cigrand made his first public proposal for the annual observance of the birth of the flag when he wrote an article titled The Fourteenth of June in the old Chicago Argus newspaper. Cigrand s effort to ensure national observance of Flag Day finally came to fruition when President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of the event on June 14, However, Flag Day did not become official until August 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the legislation and proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day. In 1966, Congress also requested that the President issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as National Flag Week. Flag Day falls within National Flag Week. This is a time when Americans should reflect on the foundations of the nation s freedom. The flag of the United States represents freedom and has been an enduring symbol of the country s ideals since its early days.

P A G E 3 Commodore s Corner Dear members and friends, This has been an exciting spring with rain, winds and harbor swells. I am happy to say that the cruise to Dana Point was a success. We had 26 people for dinner at DPYC and fun on the docks. We all made it back safe and dry to Del Mar Marina even with a lot of surfing coming home. The cruise to SGYC had 8 boats sailing down for a fun weekend of music, food and swimming. A great meal with music was attended by 22 members. And even with overcast skies we all had a great time. Thank you to Ron Kissman for all his hard work and to the SGYC dock master and Celeste for all the arrangements,. We are looking forward to SGYC s visit on Labor Day. Also mark your calendars for a great night out at OYC on June 17, RSVP to Donna Burnley. Fourth of July BBQ will be here shortly. If you can HELP with tending the BBQ or setup please let me know. Remember to get your Pass from Marina for entrance on 4 th. Commodore Linda Loftis lindaloftis@att.net The Ocean stirs the Heart, Inspires the Imagination and brings eternal Joy to the Soul. Wyland

P A G E 4 Safety and Education Cone of Protection from Lightning - Faraday's Cage Even though the odds are in your favor that your boat may never be hit by lightning, if it happens it can have devastating effects. Don't take a chance, protect yourself. If you are in a small boat and close to shore when a thunderstorm approaches, get in and off the water immediately. Better yet, don't go out if thunderstorms are predicted. But what if you are miles offshore and a storm pops up? Hopefully, you have prepared in advance. The voltages involved in lightning are so high that even materials that would normally be considered non-conductive become conductors, including the human body. The voltages are so massive that if they start to travel through a boat's structure - say through its mast - then meet with high resistance (for instance, the hull skin) the current discharge, in its attempt to reach ground, may simply blow a hole in the non-conductive barrier. The safety-conscious Captain should make sure that his vessel is properly protected. Reference should be made in detail to the standards for lightning protection as set forth by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) and the job should be performed by a licensed marine electrician. In theory, a lightning protection system is used to create what is known as a "Faraday's Cage, so called after the late nineteenth-century scientist Michael Faraday. The principle of a Faraday's Cage is to provide a surrounding, wellgrounded, metal structure, in which all parts are bonded together and carry the same electrical potential. Such a cage attracts and carries any (Continued on next page)

P A G E 5 (continued from page 4) lightning strike to ground much like lightning rods on buildings. In other words, you need to provide an unobstructed way for the lightning to dissipate its energy to ground (the water surrounding you). Faraday himself risked his own life to prove this theory. The additional benefit of a lightning protection system is that it tends to bleed off any charge build-up in the general vicinity, possibly averting a lightning strike in the first place. So how does a lightning protection system work? In a boat, the "cage" is formed by bonding together, with heavy conductors, the vessel's mast and all other major metal masses. A marine electrician must tie in the engines, stoves, air conditioning compressors, railings, arches etc. with a low resistance wire which would ultimately provide a conductive path to ground (the water) usually via the engine and propeller shaft, keel bolts, or better yet, a separate external ground plate at least 1 square foot in dimension. It is important that you ensure that your crew falls within the protection of the "cage," something not always feasible when the vessel is not built of steel or aluminum. On fiberglass or wooden boats it is advantageous to have a mast or other conductive metal protrusion extending well above the vessel, creating what is known as a "cone" or zone of protection. It is generally accepted that this cone of protection extends 45 degrees, all around, from the tip of the metal protrusion. This means that if the aluminum mast of the average sailing vessel is properly bonded to the vessel's other major metal masses and is given a direct, low-resistance conductive path to ground, the entire boat should fall within the protected zone. If the vessel has a wooden or composite mast, a marine electrician can achieve the same effect by installing a 6 to 12 inch metal spike at the top and running a heavy conductor down the mast and as directly as possible to ground, usually through the engine and propeller shaft. Again, refer to the ABYC standards and have a professional marine electrician install your lightning protection. This is not a do-it-yourself project.

PAGE 6 Santa Margarita Yacht Club s LADIES BINGO On Sunday, May 15th, ten ladies gathered in the SMYC clubhouse to enjoy an afternoon of BINGO. The games began around 1p.m. and continued throughout the afternoon for about three hours. Hidden in plain brown bags were the prizes which reflected a summer theme. As usual a couple of gifts were particularly sought after and exchanged hands several times. To keep up our energy, a table full of healthy treats and dark rich brownies were enjoyed throughout the afternoon. The much anticipated Blackout Bingo was the culmination of the games with a gift card to a local Italian restaurant going to the winner. Watch for the time and date of our next BINGO gathering in the club s newsletter and on our website. Hope to see you then and looking forward to some new faces. Director Sue Ayres On Friday, May 20th, several SMYC members and guests enjoyed a repeat visit to the HANA Japanese Restaurant in Oceanside. The group indulged in a variety of Bento Boxes with delicious Teriyaki or Tempura or some Japanese combination platters and some good wine or beer at happy hour prices. A beautiful gift basket was raffled off to the delight of the lucky winner Dale Sarafin. And, last but not least, everybody was thrilled to meet our newest members Raymond and Susan Harquail.

August 14th at the Lawrence Welk Theater P A G E 8 Get ready for another delightful and delicious Sunday Brunch and Play at the Lawrence Welk Theater. The play is the hilarious farcical dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace. written by Joseph Kesselaing in 1939 and premiered on Jan. 10, 1941 at the Helen Hayes Theater. It moved to the Hudson Theater in Sept. l943 and closed in June 1944 having played 1,444 performances. The plot revolves around the Brewster family, descended from the Mayflower, but now is composed of insane homicidal maniacs. In 1944 it was made into a movie starring Cary Grant, Boris Karloff and others. We had such a great time at our last two plays. And both times the food was fantastic. So I just booked 20 seats for August 14th, with a $ deposit. We got middle seats in the second row. The brunch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. The play starts at 1:00 p.m. Total price for Brunch and Play is $60. You may opt for just the Play for $35.00 or just the Brunch for $ RSVP and payment must be received by July 28. Please RSVP to Donna Burnley at or Catballue7729@sbcglobal.net. Payment by July 28 may be sent to my address at 637 Michael Street, Oceanside, Ca Bareboat Chartering Interested in learning the ins and outs of Bareboat Chartering? 9 SMYC SMALL BOAT RACE 3 of 8, May 28, 2016 Conditions for the third racing Saturday were: overcast with light steady wind. We were a little tired of the overcast weather that has plagued our races. The four skippers and crew set out from the dock and two very nice changes occurred. The wind slowly started to build and the sun started to burn off the gloomy haze. Shortly after the wind improvements the Capri boats snapped to a lively pace. This made the first three races go by in very short order. The crews headed to the docks for a lunch break, and race conditions improved during our break. When the four boats resumed racing conditions were about as good as they can get in the Del Mar basin. The racers were anxious to continue racing even if we did not score the additional races. The race committee and racers discussed adding more than the 5 races in the future but only scoring 5. Well, here are some scores for this race... First place Tom & Glenda (4). Second place Pat & Sue (11) Third place Patrick & Kevin (14). Fourth place Dennis & Nancy (20). A tip of the hat to those folks who helped set and retrieve the marks. A big shout out to folks who keep the committee informed about attendance on race day. A warm welcome to Dennis Harqual on his first race. The racer who showed the most panache today was Kevin and the guidance of his skipper did not go unnoticed. Take care until 4 of 8. Joe Palmiotti Dana Point Cruise On the 30th of April, five SMYC boats departed Del Mar Marina bound for Dana Point and a fun filled weekend. The WILAKUK V with Marybeth and Bill Thayer aboard lead the fleet out of a very unfriendly Oceanside Harbor entrance. Once clear of the Harbor and with a brisk SSW wind blowing, we unfurled our jibs and headed out on different tacks. The wind became quite fluky which caused speeds to vary from 2 knots to 5 knots. But we all held on to sail all the way to Dana Point, especially Linda Loftis aboard Repose II, who led all the way. We harbored up at the Dana Point Guest docks. As Jack Ranby, Cruise Director, had invited all aboard Arlion II for libations, there were a few too many, and the Wilakuk V took on the overflow. Around 6p.m. we all moved on to the Dana Point Yacht Club for dinner. The Club, as usual, took great care of us, even though they had a large private party downstairs. We had approximately 25 members and guests at dinner, as some members drove up. Sunday morning the fleet, minus the WILAKUK V, headed for home. Monday the WILAKUK V headed home with a dead downwind breeze that required the engine s help. Bill Thayer, Staff Commodore P A G E 9

P A G E 10 Memorial Day Cruise to Silver Gate Yacht Club a Success Under overcast and occasionally misty skies six boats departed from Camp Pendleton Marina for San Diego Bay on May 28 th, destination: Silver Gate Yacht Club (SGYC). Winds were very light with a modest swell out of the west as the six headed south. Mid-day, the wind picked up with some Skippers availing themselves of the opportunity to sail the last few hours before turning into San Diego Bay. Two additional SMYC boats coming via a different route later joined the six boats; all were enthusiastically greeted by the Silver Gate Commodore Richard Benscoter, Port Captain Terry Willis and assorted members who directed our boats into slips, helped with lines and provided welcome beverages. Saturday night 22 SMYC members enjoyed dinner in the Silver Gate YC dining room and live music in the bar. Our members were treated like royalty by a very attentive staff (Ashley and Will) with many SGYC members stopping by to welcome us. Sunday, several Skippers got underway to sail under overcast but pleasant conditions on San Diego Bay, while others chose to relax at the marina and avail themselves of the lovely amenities such as the pool and spa. Monday morning the Silver Gate Chef David and staff ensured a hearty breakfast was available for our cruisers. Ready for adventure, all six headed north for Camp Pendleton. The return transit was less than ideal with choppy waves and a strong current but enough wind to sail at least part of the way. The last boat safely tied up about 7p.m. Participants were: Commodore Linda Loftis and Staff Commodore Gary Hall sailing Reprieve 2; Rear Commodore Teri Reese and Dan Tzucanow with crew Debbie Elliott and Jerry Galiley sailing The Teez; Staff Commodores Bill and MaryBeth Thayer sailing Wilakuk V; Ron Kissman and Jack Ranby with Art Pavel sailing Arlion 2; Robert and Sherry Lamont sailing Constellation; Jesse and Sandy Manges sailing Lorelei; Jonathan and Kim Kolon sailing Europa; and Max Perez sailing Hokulani. Thanks to the splendid planning and execution by Cruise Program co-coordinators Jack Ranby and Ron Kissman SMYC has now enjoyed two terrific cruises this season. Many thanks to Port Captain Terry Willis and Operations Manager Celeste Leginski for all their hard work with our team to set up the logistics and most of all to Commodore Richard Benscoter and his fantastic Bridge for the warm welcome and generous hospitality. Watch the Club Newsletter and Cruising web page for another opportunity to cruise with SMYC in the 2016 season. Teri E. Reese Rear Commodore

The sun did not even come close to breaking through the clouds in the boat basin. Overcast skies and cool breezes did not deter six Capri boats from sailing in our races today. Wind conditions provided somewhat relaxed sailing around the marks with very few strong gusts. Here is the breakdown of the results: 1.Tom & Glenda (8) 2. Pat & Sue (14) 3. Jesse & Kahualani (14) 4. Patrick & Nancy (19) 5. Gary & Jim (21) 6. Bob & Sherry (28). The members who participated today had enjoyable and cordial conversation during the lunch break and after the races. I hope we can continue to enjoy all of our remaining race events with the same levels of enjoyment and camaraderie.
