Not too early to think about it. Santa Margarita Yacht Club and Del Mar Marina will be getting together to put on the Annual Cook-Out at the Marina on the 4th of JULY!!!! YOU ARE INVITED! Your Santa Margarita Yacht Club supplies all the Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and Sausages, condiments, soft drinks, water, plates. knifes, forks and spoons. All you have to do as a Member is to come (it starts around 5.00 P.M.) and bring a side dish for about 20 people anything you like. A few volunteers are needed to help, starting about 3:30 P.M. pick what you would like to help with. Setting up the awnings, tables and chairs, keeping the tables supplied during the barbecue and clean up. The more people to help in the clean up, the faster clean up is. Come on out and enjoy the day, water sports, galore ending with a great fireworks display off the North Jetty. 2 P A G E 2 Commodore s Corner Members, Our monthly meeting continue to be energetic as it produce new ideas, and many opinions. There is an energy that creates a fun environment with a concept of improvement. As we move forward into the summer, come out and enjoy the club s events. We have recently scheduled the following: an Ice cream social with a movie, a New Orleans theme party in which we will judge the best red beans and rice and Jambalaya dishes with prizes. We have a Dana Point trip in August (date to be posted soon), let me know if you re taking your boat. If you re not sailing, you can joint us at Dana Point and enjoy spirits in our boats. Take a look at the calendar in the website and keep an eye on Sailangle! So far, It s all about socials, fun, sailing, and the sun! Don t forget our boat races, they are in full swing! Come on out and test your sailing abilities. So, be there enjoy and support your clubs activities. If you have fresh ideas bring them and share them with us! Ward Annual Movie and Ice Cream Social at the clubhouse Come join in the fun and evening of entertainment! June 21st at 7PM until 10PM Ships Log: 5/20/13 11:15 A Tale is Told Sailing vessels Pokey and Carol Lee leave their slips in Ocean Side Harbor for a relaxing Monday sail. The sun has cleared all of the morning haze and swell and wind are light at the harbor entrance. The boats set their sails and boat speeds are slow as our wind is light and shifting. The course is about 150 degrees and the skippers and crew settle in for slow uneventful sail. The observant crewmembers on board noticed mylar balloons floating and the nonchalant skippers ignored the rumbling from their crews about retrieval. On board Pokey prodding by the crew shame the skipper to tack and head for their first pickup. On board the Carol Lee Skipper Nielsen and first mate Carol are quick to react and a contest has ensued. The boats close in on the first retrievals and are proud to hoist their catch on the stern rails and back stays. My best guess is that the distance between each pick up was no closer than a half mile so spotting and sailing to each one was challenging. After two successful pickups apiece the boats come with in hailing distance a formal challenge is issued and accepted. When the contest came to a end the score was 7 to 5 or ( 5 Happy Mothers Day) (4 Happy Birthdays) ( Glad U Graduated Finally) ( 1- I love You Elvis) (1-Free Willie)? To sum up our little adventure / contest, we had fun, helped our ocean, and tested our sailing and MOB skills. Also one skipper and crew has bragging rights until tomorrow. J.P.

4 Education and Safety P A G E 4 Interesting Facts About Tides We can think of the tide as water being pulled by the gravity of the moon causing a bulge on the surface of the ocean. Left only to the effects of the moon, which is the main cause of the tide, we would experience a high, then a low tide, and vice versa, every 6 hours, 12 and a half minutes. So we would have about two high and two low tides every day, and this would take 24 hours and 50 minutes. But the sun, wind and geography, among other things, have big effects on tides. Some of the highest tides of the year occur in the winter. These are referred to as King Tides, and they occur when the sun and the moon are in alignment. This causes an increased gravitational pull on the earth s oceans, resulting in that bulge talked about earlier, only bigger than normal. In 2013, we had king tides around January 9th. The following occurred on Jan. 9 and 10, 2013: At Ballast Point, in the entrance to San Diego Bay, on 9 Jan 2013 we had a tide swing of 8.39 Ft. and an Ebb to Flood current difference of 2.19 knots. At Garnet Point, Maine, the tide swing was Ft. At the Cape Cod Canal on Jan 10 the tide swing was 6.58 feet, and the current difference (ebb to flood) was 9.6 knots. At Corpus Christi, Texas, the high to low tide was 2.61 Ft. As an example of the range that tides can vary, the predicted tide for Corpus Christi, Texas on 7 May was about 1 inch. The big differences in tides between San Diego, Corpus Christi, and Maine are mostly caused by geography, which affects Maine and Corpus Christi a lot, but not San Diego. Nevertheless, look for tide heights of up to 7 feet in Oceanside Harbor around November and December, 2013, and January and February, These high tides will occur when the moon is new (you cannot see the moon) and when it is full. The lowest tides will occur at these times, also. The water level can be a foot below Mean Lower Low Water at that time. Mace Mason, Ed. And Safety

6 P A G E 6 BINGO at SMYC Smiles were prevalent at SMYC as eleven ladies gathered to play bingo on Sunday May 19th. We all want to welcome Nancy Howell, a new participant to the games. All the ladies get a 10 for bringing great Spring Garden gifts, many changed hands several times. Glenda Gardner won the Mystery Prize, a gift card to Ruby's Diner. Enjoy Come join us for your chance to become the next Mystery Prize winner. Nancy & Doris During the 4th of July Barbeque the Wiedemann s and Bordier s will be hosting the SMYC s Ice Cream Sundae Booth as a fund raiser for Hospice of the North Coast. The last six years the donations have hovered around $400. Our goal this year is $500. A minimum donation of $3.00 is requested for a three scoop sundae. Santa Margarita YC generously provides the supplies, so 100% of the donated money can go to the hospice. The sails had plenty of power to push the boats around the marks with authority providing the helm was handled skillfully. The sunshine allowed other boaters and paddle craft to enjoy the Del Mar Basin with our racers and create some traffic issues for our race boats. We had zero incidents and plenty of fun ducking each other and the other traffic on the water. Our club spectators were present in full force and acted as cheerleaders for our racers with pom pom s but sadly or gratefully absent the short cheerleader skirts. I suspect the cheerleaders were sober but I can not and will not swear to any other humans sobriety. We are a fun lot and word is spreading that fun in the sun happens at SMYC on race days.
