If you missed Opening Day, you missed Judy Welker s creative Docko Tacos roving taco feast featuring delicious chicken tacos prepared boatside with Senora Web Wench wearing Mexican attire, including a pink sombrero. Don t despair if you weren t there Norris Palmer from the Friday Harbor Sailing Club caught the whole scene on video and, bless his heart, posted it on You Tube. Just Google Docko Tacos and you can see Judy sashaying down the dock with her taco cart. You can almost taste the tacos. Thanks, Judy, for a great idea and a great show. Opening Day weekend was once again a grand success. The wind blustered and blew on Friday afternoon as the hardy mariners from both LIYC and FHSC arrived at the Islander marina. Several of our members were on hand to help, and all arriving boats were safely secured as the wind blew waves over the dock. Forty members of both clubs gathered in the Islander meeting room for a delicious potluck and good conversation. Saturday brought better weather, and members participated in games, visited different boats and, of course, feasted on the above described tacos and other tasty fare. For Saturday evening s dinner, the Islander staff provided a wonderful Cinco de Mayo themed buffet, and FHSC s Norris Palmer provided the entertainment. (Be sure and ask your Staff Commodore, Jerry Hancock, who won the wrestling match with the very large plastic inflated beer bottle.) It was a wonderful weekend, and kudos to Vice Commodore Duane Bordvick for his usual excellent planning. He thinks of everything, and we are very fortunate to have him on our team. Now that Opening Day is behind us, the cruising season stretches out ahead a summer of new and familiar destinations, good food, favorite beverages and lots of fun. Our first event will be the Clam Fest at Flat Point on Saturday, June 2nd. Continued on page 3

Note: Dock space in Westsound is limited, so depending on the number of boats, some may need to reserve a space at West Sound Marina (monitors VHF Channel 16 or call ) or anchor out in Blind Bay. Many thanks to our hosts, Ross and Anne Worley, and the other Flat Point folks for sharing their clubhouse and working with our Rear Commodore, Jim Ghinazzi, to make this event happen. Hard on the heels of the Clam Fest is the Commodore s Cruise at Brentwood Bay June 15th through the 17th. This beautiful marina is within walking or dinghy distance of the famous Butchart Gardens and is connected to the Brentwood Bay Lodge, which provides our members with spa privileges and the use of the Lodge pool. Friday evening we will gather about 5 pm on the marina s deck (complete with barbecue equipment) for a potluck and your Commodore and Staff Commodore have arranged for a world renowned guest to join us. Jerry has asked me to assure you that the guest will not bring his piano. Saturday will have lots of on your own time activities. In the evening, we have scheduled dinner in the Lodge s Seagrille Restaurant where we will order off the menu. You can check out the menu on the Lodge s web site The wild rumpus is well under way. Jane has lived full time on Lopez for 19 years and looks forward to continuing her cruising experiences with the Lopez Island Yacht Club. Gene is 3rd generation in the San Juans.

They have now downsized to a 28 Carver Santa Cruz. VESSEL SAFETY CHECK With the summer boating season upon us, it s a great time to do a thorough inspection of your boat.

4 WELCOME NEW MEMBERS...Jane Albrecht and Gene and Renee VanDePutte. All three have met requirements for LIYC membership. Jane (shown below with Commodore Diana Hancock) owns a Seasport 22 and is a partner in a 36 Choey Lee offshore sail boat. Jane has lived full time on Lopez for 19 years and looks forward to continuing her cruising experiences with the Lopez Island Yacht Club. Gene is 3rd generation in the San Juans. His grandfather settled on Lopez in He and Renee have extensive boating experience as liveaboards on a 41 yawl, then 40 ketch, taking them and their daughter Faith from Mexico to Alaska. They have now downsized to a 28 Carver Santa Cruz. VESSEL SAFETY CHECK With the summer boating season upon us, it s a great time to do a thorough inspection of your boat. One simple way to make sure everything is covered is to get a Vessel Safety Check offered by the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadron. The VSC program, now sponsored by BoatUS, is a courtesy safety exam. Volunteers will also make recommendations for gear and practices to help make your boat safer. FOR ALL OUR SAILBOAT RACING FANS...This year s America s Cup competition includes 9 teams from 8 countries: France (2), Sweden, China, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Korea, and the United States. The teams train on high-tech AC45s but actually sail AC72s in the America s Cup events. (AC72s are 72 feet long, 46 feet wide with displacement of 12,500 pounds.) The number of boats per team varies. Teams have one or two of each. For the races, each boat has a crew of five, but the number of support people for each team varies from 30 up to 100. The next America s Cup event will be June 23-July 1 near Newport, Rhode Island. Television coverage for the races will include Comcast, NBC Sports, and a prime-time slot.
