We had a wonderful gathering at the Galley on Feb 15th. Jeff and crew produced an excellent meal, and Dee Dee Lozier and Dean Gurke shared their sailing adventure to the Gray Whale calving grounds in a large lagoon on the west side of Baja California. The pictures were stunning and it truly was an adventure. Thanks to Dee Dee and Dean for presenting. Arlene Sund and Rob McNeil again hosted this event. I m hoping that others will step up to host in the future because I don t think that Arlene and Rob can host every meeting. That is a not so subtle hint. All of us on Lopez have endured some fairly harsh temperatures in December and January. I remember talking to some Old Timers on Lopez back in the 70s and 80s about island lore, weather, etc. Ellis Weeks always had time to chat when he delivered for UPS and Phil and Betty Hastin lived just up the road from me. Phil told me that once we get past February 15 th, there will not be a deep freeze until the following fall. That has proven to be true for the past 30 some years. We may have a trace of snow between now and May, and the temperature could dip below freezing some nights, but, unlike the Midwest and Eastern parts of the country, I am convinced that it will keep warming up here. Hopefully you have had a chance to look at the latest draft of the 2017 LIYC calendar. There are a number of changes from the last one we sent out. I have my heart set on sailing to Deer Harbor for the Commodore s Cruise and eating at the Deer Harbor Inn on that Saturday night. The marina already had a yacht club booked for the original weekend we had planned, so we bumped it up two weeks (to June 9-11). I m looking forward to this adventurous journey and will send out details on the Saturday dinner as soon as I am able. To accommodate having the Commodore s Cruise earlier we had to move the Flat Point Clam Bake up as well. And, you will notice that we have added a May cruise and subtracted the SPAM carving cruise. Please let me know what you think. Mike North, using input from a number of our cruising members, has put together a great North Cruise. Those members who wish to do so will be able to attend the Ganges Farmers Market on Saturday and the Sidney Thursday Street Market. I have heard that the latter is very festive and I look forward to both. I also like that Mike has left the last day or so very flexible. Continued on page 4

We need members to help with the Opening Day Weekend, from suggesting a theme, to decorating and welcoming the Friday Harbor Sailing Club or making some awesome drinks. Please consider stepping in to help with the 4 th of July Parade float. Members can also help with the sailing events serving on the Committee Boat or helping document start and finish times. Notice that the Rodman Duncan Memorial (Bar-to-Bar) Race is moved back two weeks. And I know that many of you have had great travel experiences. Please check out the fall dates for an opportunity to share as a presenter, then send me an if you would like to do so. Finally, I have a couple more weather websites to share. Many of you know of Cliff Mass. He is a Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the U of W and has contagious enthusiasm for all things weatherrelated. He actually spoke at Woodmen Hall last year and he posts regularly, 2 3 times per week, on his blog One can learn about general and very specific weather phenomena from his posts as well as a lot of detail on how weather is predicted in the Northwest and the Northeast Pacific. Another great website that our Sailing Chair, Russ Johnson, shared with me and other yacht club members is It has amazing graphics of wind speed and direction for a 4 5 day period. I have found them to be extremely accurate. That s all for now. I look forward to seeing everyone at our next dinner in March and out on the water this upcoming boating season. 5 NEW MEMBER APPLICATION Craig (Corky) and Nancy Searls have applied for membership in Lopez Island Yacht Club. HERE S THE SKINNY ON THE POO The State Parks Clean Vessel Program actually monitors and tallies gallons of sewage pumped from boats at all pump-out stations funded by the State including private marina grant recipients. Results for 2015 continue the trend that more and more boaters sewage is pumped out and never goes into the State s waters. Here are the figures: Corky and Nancy have been boating for over 50 years and own a 34 Catalina (sail) Corkarie III. They are interested cruising, racing, and boater education ,614,381 gallons ,093,514 gallons ,468,322 gallons ,699,962 gallons ,092,899 gallons ,359,046 gallons Kudos to all of us who are doing the right thing proof that boaters DO CARE about the environment.
