Along with constant lawn mowing, there is plenty of daylight to get the boat ready for the season. When was the last time you changed that fuel filter? Put new freshwater in the tanks? Took a good look under the floorboards? Now s the time! On April 22, we ve scheduled the annual Retag Your Fire Extinguisher Day. This occurs in the Islander Resort parking lot. (See related story on page 3.) To be compliant with the Coast Guard, you need to have your extinguishers checked and retagged yearly. Look for Bill LaPorte s white Sea-Cure van in the parking lot. Audrey Bordvick put on a great multimedia presentation of sailing and watercolors in the Greek Islands for our March gathering. We re looking forward to Shanley Lett s LIYC Year in Review presentation at the upcoming April 21 General Membership Meeting at the Islander. This year, the last weekend in April is also the first weekend in May. That makes it Opening Day weekend. Vice Commodore Jerry Hancock and Rear Commodore Diana Hancock have been working hard with our friends at the Friday Harbor Sailing Club to put on a great Opening Day event. This year we re going with the Hawaiian theme so start thinking mu mu s, bikinis, and grass skirts! Nothing says Hawaii like a grass skirt with a Polartec top and Ugg boots! Don t forget to decorate the boat, too. There will be slips available at the Islander, compliments of the Diller family, games, races, and a Hawaiian dinner. Be sure to make your arrangements by checking out the flyer in this newsletter. This year, on the third weekend in June, I ve chosen Port Browning Marina on North Pender Island as the destination of the Commodore s Cruise. It s close, it s quaint, it s funky, and there s a great pub. Onshore accommodations are available close by. Check out the article in this newsletter and on the web site for sign up information. 2 Opening Day (and more) Festivities Saturday, May 1 st, Lopez Islander Resort Theme: Hawaiian (Let your imagination be your guide: Hawaii 5-0, Don Ho, Joe the Volcano, Hawaiian legends, drumming, hula, fire dancing, outrigger canoes!) Lopez Island Yacht Club and Friday Harbor Sailing Club will once again join to celebrate Opening Day at the Lopez Islander Resort. Friday Evening (April 30th): Boaters are welcomed to assigned slips and all club members are invited to potluck hors d oeuvres and 5 o-clock pre-celebration Opening Day festivities. Saturday: Games.1100 hours (and continue until we are exhausted.) Open Boat hours - Join LIYC and FHSC club members on the docks for refreshments. Balloons designate which boats are available to tour. Opening Day Address & Social Hour 1830 hours - Commodores Rebecca Hughes and David Welker Hawaiian Buffet hours - followed by awards MENU Teriyaki Chicken and Beef Skewers, Lomi Lomi, Mahi Mahi, Fried Rice, Hawaiian Style Macaroni and Potato Salads and Pineapple Upside Down Cake Cost for dinner is $27.00 per person (including tax and gratuity). Beer, wine or other beverages may be purchased in the Islander Lounge. The Islander is providing two nights (Friday and Saturday) FREE moorage. Space is limited so get your reservations in early. George and Stepper have a 26 Surf Scooter named Allen and > Frankie Clark are Whiskey Hill residents in the process of looking for a boat. <Doug Simmons and Sandy Barr own a 28 Columbia Waioli and recently took first place in the Shaw Island Classic sailboat race. And welcome back to Dick and Chris Bangsund who have reinstated their membership. Dick and Chris have a 38 Ocean Alexander named SeaNile. Please welcome them at our upcoming meetings and events. ANNUAL FIRE EXTINGUISHER SERVICE SET FOR APRIL 22 On Thursday, April 22, Bill LaPorte of Sea -Cure Services of San Juan will again travel to Lopez to inspect fire extinguishing units for LIYC members (and their friends). Bill will also update your unit s tags to show they are current to meet Coast Guard regulations. Bill will be receiving units in the parking lot across from the Islander Resort office from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Prices for this service are: Units of 2.5# and under $ # to 5# # and over You may bring as many as you like, including those from home. Bring your check or cash. No credit cards, please. 4 MORE...THANKS TO OUR LONGSTANDING MEMBERS Last month s Newsline honored those members who have been supporting Lopez Island Yacht Club for over 20 years. But several other of our members are coming up on that 20 year milestone. Mark and Mary Stiger joined LIYC in the summer of 1991 with a boat named Bartender. Mark and Mary (shown at right at Opening Day festivities in 2003) headed the Christmas Party committee for several years. << Barbara and Gordie Rydberg were close behind in 1992 in their 27 Tollycraft Aquarius. Gordie has served on the LIYC Board of Trustees and both have hosted many events over the years the most recent being the October 2009 general membership meeting where they also celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. In the picture at left, they re attending the 2003 Flat Point Clambake. And speaking of clambakes, probably no one has hosted the annual Flat Point event more often than Ross and Anne Worley (as they re doing here in 1999). The Worleys joined in 1993 with their sailboat Worlwind, a Cal 34. Also with 17 years as LIYC members in good standing are Dick and Ann Behan (below with granddaughter Katie and Betty and Leo Zaborsky at a 1997 luncheon at Olga.) The Behans have had several boats over the years, most recently a 20 Pacific Seacraft sailboat named Rowdy. A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF THESE LONG- TIME LIYC SUPPORTERS!

5 THE PROGRAM FOR THE MARCH GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING on March 17th was Audrey Bordvick s entertaining video production of a beautiful painting/sailing trip to Greece, but there was plenty of celebratin and wearin of the good ole Irish green, as well.. 6 PORT BROWNING SITE OF 2010 COMMODORE S CRUISE JUNE 18, 19, 20, 2010 This year s Commodore s Cruise destination will be Port Browning Marina located on the southeast side of North Pender Island. The central location is an easy walk or bike ride to Driftwood Centre shopping, golf or Hope Bay. The Nosey Point B&B is on adjoining property, for looking for onshore accommodations. The resort site has a great pub and restaurant with newly improved facilities including a pool. We ll put together a group dining event for Saturday night and maybe a short trip to visit the Saturna Island Winery. As usual, we ll freestyle it on Friday evening. You will be able to clear Canadian Customs at Poets Cove (Bedwell Harbour) on South Pender Island and from there most boats can take the short cut under the bridge between the north and south islands. There are bridge clearance and water depth restrictions, so check your charts carefully! BORDER CROSSINGS: REMINDER - NEW BC LAW With cruising season just around the corner, don t forget about British Columbia s new safety equipment requirements enacted for all boaters, including U.S. residents, for all boats operating in Canadian waters. All boats (including kayaks, rowboats, dinghies, etc) must carry the following safety equipment at all times: Personal Floatation Device for each person Bailing Device Bouyant 50 Heaving Line with Float Sound device (Whistle) Waterproof Flashlight and batteries In an article announcing these new requirements last June, the RCMP stated they will start ticketing for non-compliance in The marina moorage is $1.25/ft and 15 & 30 amp power are available.
