Box 22 e Lopez Island, WA r NElVSLINE DICIMBID Happenings COMMODORE'S CORNER December Board Meeting Wednesday, Dec 3 December General Membership Meeting and Christmas Patty Wednesday, Dec 17 MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Commodore Bill Pugerude It really is amazing how much effort, planning, meetings, and phone calls it takes to make this club function. There are many members that do some and a few that do more. It an adds up to a grand total that makes this organization successful. Some of the programs that are very visible are the monthly meetings, drawings, support for the youth sailing program, cruises and burgee exchanges. Those are only the tip of the iceberg. Thanks to Shanley who continues to punch out the ''Newsline''. The least we can do for her is get the information to her on time. Thanks to Gordie Rydberg and,jim Lett, our outgoing board members. A special thanks to our Chaplain Bob Maxson, who visits those in need. His help and friendship is unique to each individual. Thanks to all our meeting and cruise hosts. Thanks to Carolyn Woodbury and Tanya Carney for updating and distributing our yacht club handbooks. Vice Commodore Bill White Rear Commodore Dave Welk.er Secretary Judy Welker Treasurer Rod Duncan Trustees Jim Lett Gordie Rydberg Chaplain Bob Maxson Historian Patty Maxson Our board has followed certain mandates and responsibilities that keep our bank balance adequate without any plan to increase dues_ We need a nomination for the annual "Bent Propeller" Award_ Did you bend one this year? A member has the right to keep it quiet jf he so desires. I am glad the award is not retroactive because I have bent many props in the past! I hope to see you at the Christmas party on December 17th. Part of the program is the "Change of Watch" and recognition of new and promoted officers and board members_ It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve as your Commodore_ Thank you all for making this a great year! 3 AMERICA'S ClIP HOIJEI7fJIJ BOLDS SEA l1uals IN SAN JUAN ISlANDS If you were on the water around the San Juans during August and September, you might have seen the t3>mw O Lf,.i under full sail with a retinue ot chase boats and support boats. It would have been hard to miss with s 5000 square foot mainsail on a 1 58 foot mast. The sleek trimaran is the ultimate in high performance sailboat racing technology and it's sponsors have decided to mount a challenge for the America's Cup. NEED A BOATING FIX OVER THE WINTER MONTHS? As all the "old salts>' already know, practice makes perfect.. And if you're relatively new to boating, one of the scariest boating maneuvers has always been docking. Now you can try docking without fear, embarrassment or damage to your boat with the new BoatUS online "Dockit" game. The game is easily controued with the arrow keys on your computer keyboard and requires no special downloads or game equipment. Try it at mes. maximum performance with a multi-hull design with a beam of up to 90'. Initial sea trials near Anacortes showed that the 90 runs at 27 knots in 9 mots of wind. But, on the docks. the rumor was this boat may break the multi-hull speed record by going over 50 knots. (It remains 10 be seen if the boat will be accepted as an America's Cup contender.) In October, BMW DF-AC-L IZALINGi 10 was loaded onto a Dunlap Towing barge and delivered to San Diego for further sea trials. " And the rest of the story... UYC's own Russ Johnson was the one who won Dunlap's contract.. bid for the barge and transport to Southern Califomia. 5 G E. A S o.r e. E T N [ 5 N G 5 IT IIADY Jftl Till tuttii 8G4T,nGW WIT..
