However, while participants agreed the Sucia trip was a great time, the weather was less than stellar. Meanwhile, the 4th of July had clear, sunny skies. It was an excellent venue for Judy Welker and her Lopez Island Yacht Club Drill Team to show islanders another Diorama of Pageantry. Judy s idea for this year s parade entry had sailboats, sign holders, walking buoy markers and human propelled dolphins on three-wheeled carts. Sailing down Lopez Road, the well coordinated LIYC participants enthusiasm was a big hit with parade watchers and judges. The team s costumes, signs, decorating and marching brought home the Best of Theme Award. LIYC member Susan Patty captured the spirit of the event with her LIYC parade photos. Those photos were so close, it appeared she was in the road. Since press photographer Shanley Lett was in the parade, I am sure some of Susan s dramatic photos will be in the Year in Review slide show. LIYC members agreed Sucia Island and the surrounding area is beautiful, and they had a great time. But, during that first afternoon, the sunny weather changed to rain. Most participants tied to a cable mooring line after arriving in beautiful surroundings and great weather. However, new LIYC member Ted Sanchez threw out an anchor on his recently acquired sailboat. He arrived with 20-year Lopezian and former high school classmate, Dennis Penzel. Blakely Island donuts arrived on Duane Bordvick s boat to energize the group. Then it was off to the island for sightseeing and a hike. Later, a smattering of rain drops were a portend of things to come, and everyone headed bad to the anchorage for a progressive boat-to-boat cocktail, munchies and conversation party. 2 North cruise 2011 Beginning Monday, August 8 Ending with the regular schedule cruise to Ganges, August Details are still being finalized but the tentative schedule includes: Montague Harbour, Nanaimo, crossing the Strait of Georgia to Secret Cove, Squirrel Cove, Desolation Sound, Priddeaux Haven and/or Melanie Cove, Refuge Cove, Genoa Bay or?, then on to Ganges. Note: Anyone interested in participating or providing input, get your name on the information distribution list by ing Rear Commodore Duane Bordvick duane@shoalbaycompany.com. 3 Continued from Cover Page It rained all night and Saturday morning Sam Beller used his taxi dinghy to bring participants to Kinship for a brunch of lox, bagels, melon, orange juice and Bloody Mary s. Sparkling weather returned for the Port Ludlow cruise. The Strait of Juan de Fuca was calm and there were clear sight lines all the way across the water. All participants travelled under a beautiful blue sky. On Friday evening, members of the Port Ludlow Yacht Club invited us to their Wreck House for introductions, drinks and conversation. The members were delightful hosts. We talked about sailing and cruising, ate a lot of their popcorn, and used the opportunity to pose for pictures while exchanging burgees. We were also invited to use their club house deck for our potluck finger food buffet. I learned that standing between David Welker and Duane Bordvick has real advantages. David expertly carried the conversation about sailing. So the Port Ludlow members thought we all were sailors. And, Duane is so smooth he sounds like an ambassador. So, they also thought everyone on Lopez Island was smooth. As an added benefit, both David and Duane are tall. If the bar bill had been presented, I wouldn t have even been noticed. I also like to stand next to Jim Lett, Russ Johnson and Sam Beller (for the same reason). Later our small but boisterous group of eight had a very enjoyable dinner at the Port Ludlow Inn and Resort Fireside Restaurant. Saturday afternoon, we drank margaritas on Russ and Jonelle Johnson s boat Sea Biscuit. Jonelle grew the fresh strawberries for the drinks. I mention this because Russ and Jonelle will be carrying a blender on their boat for all future cruises. The weather was perfect for an outdoor wedding. We watched from our boats as a wedding party gathered across the water at the totem pole point. Even though our group wasn t invited to the reception, we toasted the bride and groom. That evening, we used the tented space overlooking the marina for a great barbecue potluck. The canvas framed the view of the boats below and the houses across the bay. As the sun set, the breeze dropped as well. We watched the light fade over the marina, and the back-lighted snow covered Olympic Mountains became center stage. The wedding reception was going strong at 10:30 pm as Diana and I retired for the evening. We were around the corner from the festivities and couldn t hear the partying, so went right to sleep. Later, I felt as though we were part of the event when someone threw all the empty party bottles in the dumpster at 2:39 in the morning. Maybe rain at Sucia has its moments. Jerry

USCG ALERT: SHOALING IN SWINOMISH CHANNEL Numerous soundings of shoaling in the Swinomish Channel have been reported, primarily from the south entrance, north to the vicinity of LaConner. Some depths have been reported as two (2) feet less than the charted depths. Some of the shoaling is near the center of this narrow waterway. Mariners are advised to use caution when transiting the channel. We also remind boaters to monitor the tides closely (the controlling depth for the channel is less than feet.) 5 8th STRAIGHT WIN FOR LIYC PARADERS LIYC s entry into the annual Fourth of July Parade took top honors (Best of Theme) for the 8th straight year. Masterminded by Judy Welker, the entry included boats, motorized vehicles and dancing sea creatures. Also, impressive, we had so many members and friends who volunteered in numerous capacities to help put the Lopez Island Yacht Club once again in the July Fourth history books and to cheer us on from the sidelines. They had been waiting for about a week for parts and the mechanic to install them. (Fish boats take priority over pleasure craft.) Luckily, the fishing has been good and Judy seems pleased with her catch, just in time for dinner.
